“Return to Silent Hill” is the new psychological horror film directed by Christophe Gans, starring Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson, releasing in theaters in 2024:
“…driven by the shadows of his past, ‘James Sunderland’ returns to ‘Silent Hill’ to find his lost love, ‘Mary Crane’. But the dark, depressing small town is no longer the place from his memories. He meets characters who seem all too familiar and who try to divert him from his search for Mary.
‘The longer he searches for Mary, the more he begins to wonder if this is still reality - or if he has fallen into the dark underworld of ‘Jacob Crane’…”

Going off to a secluded location always leads to disaster. Characters swap the bright lights of the city for a respite far removed from civilization, unaware that danger lurks in the woods. Toss in a tortured relationship, and it’s the perfect storm. In celebration of Pride Month, let’s take a closer look at two such films, Icelandic horror/thriller Rift and Canadian psychological terror What Keeps You Alive. Both films depict the maddening descent into chaos, each detailing how a relationship meets a bloody, grisly end. Along the way, you’re whipped into an emotional frenzy.
In director Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen’s Rift, Gunnar (Björn Stefánsson) and Einar (Sigurður Þór Óskarsson) have split, yet find themselves still emotionally attached and unable to move on. We first meet them months after the breakup when they both attend the same party. Out on the balcony, Gunnar and Einar nurse drinks and try to reconnect.

Dark Nature begins with a much different, and more realistic horror than what follows. Joy is busy in the kitchen making dinner when Derek gets home. It’s obvious he’s not happy and from the way both Joy and the dog react we know that is a very bad thing. She barely escapes, the dog isn’t so lucky.
Six months later Joy is still trying to get past this trauma and her friend Carmen thinks she has the solution. She convinces her to join her, Tara (Helen Belay; Abracadavers), Shaina and some others on a camping trip/therapy session with the somewhat controversial Dr. Dunnely, “You guys talk about her like you’re in a cult”.

It's about time for "Silent Hill" to make a comeback. The popular horror video game franchise is not only getting several new entries but also another film adaptation. "Return to Silent Hill" will become the third movie in the series, though it sounds as if director Christopher Gans is making more of a reboot than a proper sequel. The film will serve to accompany the upcoming video game titles in a massive wave of "Silent Hill" projects that publisher Konami announced last October.
The series revolves around the titular town of Silent Hill (located in Maine in the games and West Virginia in the movies), a place imbued with an ancient and terrible power that manifests its visitors' inner fears, traumas, and guilt in the form of misshapen creatures. Each entry follows a different character and their hellish adventures into Silent Hill, where they have to contend with the Order,...

A couple weeks ago, we shared a report that Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans’ new Silent Hill movie Return to Silent Hill, which is said to be “totally independent from the two previous movies”, would star Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) as a man who ventures into the town of Silent Hill to find his lost love. Now an official press release has arrived to confirm the plot and the involvement of Irvine, and to announce that Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) is also in the cast!
Gans directed the 2006 version of Silent Hill from a screenplay he wrote with Roger Avary and Nicolas Boukhrief, and will be directing this new film from a screenplay he has written with Sandra Vo-Anh and Will Schneider. Dark Nature
Beginning with mundane but no less disturbing domestic horrors and moving on to a survival situation in a remote part of the Canadian Rockies, Berkley Brady’s Dark Nature is one of those films which evidently has as much story behind its development as it puts up onscreen. It played as part of 2022’s Fantasia International Film Festival, and it follows a troubled woman, Joy (Hannah Emily Anderson), as she tries to get over an abusive relationship by going on a hiking trip with a therapist and a group of women who have all experienced traumas of their own. I met up with Berkley early on in the festival and asked her about the origins of the story.
“I was definitely always interested in the dynamics between people, and dynamics between women,” she says. “And, I think, the role of friendship and being in the wilderness. I've had a.

We’re seeing a lot of horror that is dealing with the effects of trauma and healing. These topics are having a rightful genre moment and are the subjects of a lot of different films. From She Will to Swallow to The Vigil and more, stories about the aftermath of trauma are very much a part of the current horror landscape. Which makes sense - we are in a place culturally where we are asking individuals and cultures as a whole to take responsibility for past wrongdoings. This moment of recognition is, in turn, offering (to various degrees of success) the victims of trauma the space and the grace to begin to heal. At least, that’s what we hope. So it’s only natural that our fiction begins to reflect these thoughts and desires as well. Berkeley Brady’s Dark Nature is a horror film that takes on these complicated needs,...

There’s risk dealing with a therapy group like that at the center of Berkley Brady’s directorial debut Dark Nature: the narrative quite often needs to turn into a “Trauma Olympics” if it’ll progress. She knows this and even includes the sentiments as a joke early on when one of Dr. Dunnley’s (Kyra Harper) usual patients Shaina (Roseanne Supernault) speaks about why she’s attending this woodland retreat in the Treaty 7 territory of northern Alberta (Brady is a Métis filmmaker) before trivializing those of newcomer Joy (Hannah Emily Anderson). It’s an important moment, reminding us the potency of trauma isn’t about some objective scale of relativity. Whether war (Shaina) or domestic abuse (Joy), the resulting suffering these women face is what matters.
It can be difficult to separate, especially when the correlation aligns for some. While the psychological horrors Joy faces appear stronger than Shaina...

Folklore horror is an interesting sub-genre for fans. With the release of The Witch the bar was set high for “witchcraft” films that came after it to hit. This is often unfair as many don’t really deserve to be compared to the film. This is somewhat the case of Blood Harvest.
A devout community find themselves plagued by bad luck, dying animals and dying animals they feel cursed. Is the person to blame Audrey Earnshaw (Catherine Walker) the daughter of an outcast of the village?

Despite horror’s thematic binding to society’s most current fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my twenty favorite genre titles from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but today? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – a damn fine one at that.
My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror films this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gold worth mining. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, all the works. While some cable networks strike gold with hit TV series, usually cable shows just don't draw the same sort of audience the big broadcast networks do. Although USA Network originally ordered the new TV show, The Purge, the thriller is also going to be rerun at times on its sister-station Syfy. Will running it on two NBC-Universal owned networks help it draw a larger audience, or at least minimize the cost to one network, or will viewers just be confused? Will The Purge be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

The Purge proves once again that anti-gun zones fail to stop gun violence and being a pacifist won't save you when it's kill or be killed.
This The Purge review contains spoilers.
The Purge Episode 8
Like Penelope and Miguel, I am a Purge survivor. No, really! If you'll indulge me my inner Sophia Petrillo, picture it: Louisville, 2014.
It's a hot August day, when fliers start appearing on telephone poles around town. The leering face of the masked man from the original Purge film dominates the flier, which promises “Louisvilles The Purge” from 8:00 Pm until 6:30 Am. In hindsight, it seems silly, but at the time, it was taken seriously as a real threat. Five months earlier, a mob of 200 teenagers formed up at a major park on the city waterfront. The group rampaged up and down major streets, beating, robbing, and vandalizing property before the incident dispersed. Several people were hospitalized.

As the film world’s awards season heats up, audiences are already anticipating new projects starring Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Toni Collette, Michael Douglas, and Benicio del Toro.
Of course, all of those projects happen to be TV series, and they’re part of what’s shaping up to be perhaps the most ambitious fall TV season ever. A lot has been made of TV’s current reboot/remake/reunion culture, and that’s definitely a trend this fall. Some of the season’s most anticipated new shows include CBS’ return to “Murphy Brown,” and what ABC has in store for “The Conners,” the spin-off of “Roseanne” that comes thanks to Twitter.
The fall also includes several adaptations, including Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” Amazon’s TV take on the successful podcast “Homecoming,” starring Roberts (and from Sam Esmail), and AMC’s next limited series...

The most recent “Purge” movie may have flashed back to show the origins of the frightening ritual, but the USA television series of the same name won’t be as political.
The New Founding Fathers of America (Nffa) are still a part of the show, most notably through the character of Albert Stanton (Reed Diamond), who is an architect of this new world order. But “for everybody else, it’s background noise,” says showrunner Thomas Kelly. “This is the world they live in.”
The show is set a decade after that first purge, and so the core characters have just gotten used to it as a part of their lives. The majority of them try to ignore it and go about their lives without giving into any “purge” urges.

We've got a trailer here's for a dark and twisted horror sci-fi thriller called Await Further Instructions that looks like it could be a fun and creepy movie. I'm not really familiar with anyone involved with the movie, but I like what I'm seeing in this first trailer.
"The story revolves around the Milgram family, who have gathered to celebrate Christmas, only to find a mysterious black substance has surrounded their house. Something monumental is clearly happening right outside their door, but what exactly – an industrial accident, a terrorist attack, nuclear war? Descending into terrified arguments, they turn on the television, desperate for any information. On screen, a message glows ominously: ‘Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions...'"
The movie comes from director Johnny Kevorkian and it stars David Bradley, Neerja Naik, Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw), David Bradley (Game of Thrones), Sam Gittins (The Smoke), Holly Weston (Howl), Kris Saddler...

What if you found out that the person you married isn't who you thought they were? Filmmaker Colin Minihan explores that harrowing question in his new movie, What Keeps You Alive, which follows a violent one-year anniversary between Jules (Brittany Allen) and Jackie (Hannah Emily Anderson).
With IFC Midnight releasing What Keeps You Alive in Us theaters and on VOD platforms beginning August 24th, Daily Dead recently caught up with Minihan and co-star Allen to discuss the unconventional casting process for the role of Jackie (which was originally intended to be a male character), filming near Allen's family's cottage, and the movie's exploration of how well you can really know the one you love the most.
Colin, because I know you wrote and directed this movie, where did you come up with the idea for this?

In the age of Tinder and Bumble, finding new love can be as simple as a single swipe. But sometimes the prospects of meeting a total stranger can lead down some dark paths only visible with time. That’s the central theme throughout “What Keeps You Alive,” a smart and timely thriller from director Colin Minihan.
The filmmaker reimagines old horror tropes — particularly one half of a couple turning on the another in a remote location — through a topical lens. “What Keeps You Alive” is a chilling look at the unraveling of a relationship, and what happens when inner demons come bubbling to the surface to turn betrayal into bloodshed, bolstered by superb performances and some truly shocking twists.

What begins by seemingly trading in an old horror trope – a shadowy, hooded figure lurks outside as a loving couple settle for a romantic break in a secluded cabin in the woods – soon veers off into another, altogether more satisfying direction in director Colin Minihan’s nifty little psychological thriller. Jackie and Jules are a female married couple celebrating their one-year anniversary in the aforementioned rustic property which belongs to Jackie’s family. The area holds many memories for her – some happy, one incredibly painful – but as the two kick back and relax in what is intended to be the first of many peaceful candle-lit evenings and afternoon hikes, it becomes apparent pretty soon that one half of the couple has other plans in store, which don’t exactly lean on the loving.

The new IFC Midnight movie What Keeps You Alive (read Heather Wixson's SXSW review here) is coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Scream Factory on November 27th. Directed by Colin Minihan, What Keeps You Alive follows Jigsaw alums Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen as Jackie and Jules, a couple on vacation at a cabin in the woods where all hell breaks loose, leading to the unsettling question: do you ever really know anyone?
From Scream Factory: "We are pleased to announce that we have a new IFC Midnight film planned for release on Blu-ray & DVD this November!

“[Insert] is the best revenge.” Does this sound familiar but incomplete? That’s perhaps a good template to consider when going into What Keeps You Alive, a dark and bumpy genre piece, at times sporting a steady pulse yet never quite congealing into a satisfying experience. Writer-director Colin Minihan has some chops, and there are moments of inspired image-making to behold, such as an ingenious blacklight sequence. Yet there’s a suffocating feeling of something missing.
We meet married couple Jackie and Jules as they head toward their big cabin in the woods to celebrate their anniversary. An early sign of trouble is a broken-down boathouse by the lake; the rot hidden behind cozy domesticity. Sure enough, tensions mount and a shocking betrayal takes quiet wine nights off the table permanently, making vengeance the main course. Minihan builds his first act to a surprising bang, culminating in a shock that is sure to elicit gasps.

"I'm done playing around... I know these woods..." IFC Films has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled What Keeps You Alive, which premiered at both the SXSW and Fantasia festivals this year. The film is about a female married couple who head to a cabin in the mountains near a lake to celebrate their one-year anniversary. From the moment they arrive, something changes in Jules' normally loving wife, as Jackie (if that even is her real name?) begins to reveal a previously unknown dark side. Ooh. Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen star, along with Martha MacIsaac and Joey Klein. "Defying expectations at every turn," the film is described as "a nerve-twisting cat and mouse thriller built around a shattering tale of heartbreak and betrayal." This looks totally nuts and thrilling as all hell. Enjoy. Here's the red band trailer (+ poster) for Colin Minihan's What Keeps You Alive,...
