His family moved to Chicago when he was 13. He won a football scholarship to Western Illinois where he majored in history, and afterward joined the US Marine Corps. He later attended the US Naval War College, where he received a master's degree in national security and strategic studies, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University, where he completed a master's in national resource strategy.
