There’s a long tradition in cinema – in horror, in science fiction and in thrillers more generally – of women or children witnessing shocking incidents but finding themselves disbelieved by everyone around them. As former law student turned director Gia Elliot became all too aware, it reflects a real life tradition of women and children being disbelieved when reporting actual assaults. named for the long established feminist rallying cry which rejects the notion that women’s behaviour should be restricted because society isn’t willing to make a serious investment in dealing with predators, Take Back The Night combines these two ideas, looking at what happens when a young woman is assaulted by a supernatural monster and treated like a liar.
That woman is Jane, played by Emma Fitzpatrick, whose grounded, three dimensional performance holds the whole enterprise together. Not everybody will relate to her straight away but almost everyone will recognise her.

Take Back The Night
Horror is a common choice for first time feature directors because it doesn’t generally require a big budget and there’s a friendly, receptive audience for it. Gia Elliot’s Take Back The Night, however, is making a much bigger splash than most of its peers, in part because it addresses horrors which are very much part of the real world, it supernatural premise pointing up the absurdity of real life situations which are all too common.
In the film, young artist Jane (Emma Fitzpatrick) is assaulted by a supernatural creature. Even though she is initially careful about how she frames this when talking to doctors and police officers and her sister, she soon finds herself disbelieved, accused of inflicting her wounds herself, even threatened with legal action for making a false report. Her mental health is severely affected. When it emerges that her attacker is stalking her,...

An artist is preyed upon by a mysterious demon in LA, setting up a horror-parable for our times that is undermined by a sketchy, muddled storyline
In Gia Elliot’s horror parable, a foul presence preys on women in the dark alleys of Los Angeles, but the real terror stems from the ordeal of not being believed. After a night of heavy drinking, an artist who goes by the name of “Jane Doe Does” on social media staggers home, only to be brutally attacked by a mysterious demon. Despite her injuries, a history of petty crime, substance abuse and mental illness tragically turns the police, the media and her own followers against her. Jane spirals into a cycle of paranoia as the deadly creature stalks her every footstep.
Like many recent horror films that are so laden with political allegories that they say little of substance, this well-intentioned commentary on...

We're very happy to hear that Salem Horror Fest will be making its return in April 2023! Film submissions are already open and more details will be revealed in the coming months, but in the meantime, check out the official press release below and the killer artwork from David Dembowski!
Salem, Massachusetts - April 20, 2022 - Named by FilmFreeway as one of the “best genre festivals in the world,” the aggressively, and unapologetically queer Salem Horror Fest will return to the Halloween capital of the world for it’s sixth year next April 20 - April 30, 2023.
Addressing the move, festival director Kay Lynch said, “ Salem is a nightmare. Every October, half a million visitors descend upon a city population of 50,000 - snarling traffic, crowding the streets, and commandeering an extremely low inventory of hotel rooms driving up prices so that no one can travel to Witch City for a weekend without dropping 2,500. This is not the experience,...

Right from the title director Gia Elliot and co-writer Emma Fitzpatrick make it clear that Take Back the Night isn’t just another monster movie. By using the slogan of many marches and movements protesting violence against women as their title they signal their intention to make this about more than simple scares.
The challenge with that is not letting the message overwhelm the actual plot and the film’s entertainment value. Or worse become heavy-handed and preachy. The Hunting, which I recently reviewed, is an example, its message about veterans and Ptsd taking over what was supposed to be a werewolf film. Can the makers of Take Back the Night succeed where many have failed before?...

"I'm not making this up!" Dark Sky Films has revealed a new trailer for Take Back The Night, an intense vigilante horror-thriller made by filmmaker Gia Elliot. This premiered at a bunch of genre film festivals last year, including the Telluride Horror Fest, and is arriving on VOD in March this year. Finding herself the victim of a violent monster attack, Jane launches a vigilante campaign to hunt the beast that tried to kill her. Her troubling history of drug use & mental illness causes her family, community, and authorities to question the authenticity of her account. Suddenly alone in her fight, Jane starts to doubt if this Monster exists at all. Emma Fitzpatrick stars as Jane, with Angela Gulner, Jennifer Lafleur, Sibongile Mlambo, Corina Kinnear, Kati Sharp, Natalie D'Amico, and Jess Varley. This looks stylish & terrifying, but also looks like an extremely obvious metaphor about sexual assault "monsters" ...
