This discreet yet gently ironic Swedish documentary encourages us to look at the bright side of death; that is, the attentive preparations for those passing, and the miraculous persistence of earthly matters around them. It’s shot in what you might call the European objective style, reminiscent of Ulrich Seidl and Nikolaus Geyrhalter: largely static, square-on tableaux of activity in morgues, crematoriums, cemeteries, hearses and the like. But they’re filled with small talk that attests to the unstoppable flow of life, even in these most sombre of places.

Copenhagen Intl. Documentary Film Festival, which runs March 21-April 3, has revealed the lineup for its international financing and co-production event Cph:forum.
Women are taking central stage in the lineup both as characters and storytellers, and the Forum will feature new projects by Jialing Zhang (“One Child Nation”), Ilinca Calugareanu (“Chuck Norris vs. Communism”), Tova Mozard (“Psychic”), Elizabeth Lo (“Stray”) and Lana Wilson (“Miss Americana”) among others.

Short presentations including footage was shown for projects including:

The story will examine what happened when Mexican anthropologist Santiago Genovés tried a unique experiment in 1973, putting 10 people on a raft for a 101-day voyage to study human behaviour. Lindeen brought the participants together for the first time in 43 years to talk about Genoves’ manipulative behaviour. “I wanted make a reunion and let them talk about their memories of what happened on the raft,” he said. “We let the subjects make a study of the scientist.” The team aims to deliver the film in the autumn.

UK film The Selfish Giant has picked up the Bronze Horse for best film at the 24th Stockholm Film Festival (Nov 6-17).
It marks the second consecutive year a film by a female director has won the top prize at Stockholm, after Cate Shortland’s Lore picked up the award last year.
The film, about two young friends who gather scrap metal for cash, was described by the jury as “a uniquely complete film. Shattering, to the point, poetic, believable, delicate, humorous. The sensitive interaction between the two main actors has resulted in the most touching portrayal of friendship we’ve seen in film. Only someone hard-hearted could fail to love this film.”
