Jay Alvarez’s “Something’s More Than One Thing,” executive produced by the Russo Brothers, has unveiled its first trailer.
The film will have its world premiere at the 32nd Raindance Film Festival in London, where it is also nominated for the Spirit of Raindance Award. It stars comic Devan Costa, Alex Sgambati (“The Walking Dead”), James Scully (“You”), César-winning actor and musician Soko (“In the Beginning”) and longtime Alvarez collaborator, Will Hand (“I Play With the Phrase Each Other”).
Styled as a contemporary satire, the ensemble cast of over 300 actors aims to portray the multifaceted nature of online life, exploring modern-day dating and hyperconnected existence.
The plot follows Caitlin and her boyfriend Dylan, whose relationship unravels after a disturbing revelation. Seeking advice online, they encounter conflicting guidance — Dylan delves into the manosphere (online communities discussing men’s rights and masculinity) while Caitlin faces online mobs demanding the relationship’s end.

Moving away from home to the big city can be a life altering experience, and in his debut feature film, writer/director Jay Alvarez looks to be capturing and twisting that feeling into the surreal with "I Play With The Phrase Each Other," slated to premiere in competition at the Slamdance Film Festival. Starring Will Hand, Megan Kopp, Alexander Fraser and Alvarez himself, the film follows the neurotic Jake who moves to the city, with plans to meet up with his poet friend Sean. But when he arrives, Sean is missing Jake is left to fend for himself in a bleak landscape, which in this clip seems like the meeting point between Jim Jarmusch and David Lynch. And that's not all as Alvarez shot his film on the iPhone, with the narrative constructed entirely out of cell phone calls. It looks like a fascinating experiment. "I Play With The Phrase Each Other" screens on Saturday,...

Top brass at the upcoming 20th Slamdance Film Festival have revealed their narrative feature and documentary line-up, one day before the first programme announcements are due from Park City neighbour Sundance.
There are 10 narrative and eight documentary films including 11 world premieres, four North American and one Us.
Festival organisers sorted through more than 5,000 submissions to find the 18 titles, all of which are feature directorial debuts budgeted at under $1m and without Us distribution.
Jury awards are presented to feature films in both categories and all films are eligible for the Spirit Of Slamdance Award judged by the film-makers themselves. The festival also presents Audience Awards.
“The 2014 Feature Competition bristles with raw talent and innovative filmmaking,” said Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter. “As an organisation run by film-makers for film-makers, we couldn’t imagine a truer way of representing the first 20 years and beginning our next.”

This debut feature from writer, director and actor Jay Alvarez is, as the publicity enthusiastically tells you, the first feature film composed entirely of cell phone calls. In principle, this novel approach is a brilliant one. For the one thing, it gives the characters the chance to vent their spleens outright. Much like the confessional diary entries of protagonists in found-footage films, no time is spent dilly-dallying around plot points and introductions, we cut straight to the case. Secondly, the approach is favourable because it encourages the idea that films can be made with minimal resources, and that with a great cast and with great writing, dialogue can prove enough to carry any story. This is a most refreshing stance in the current era of filmmaking, and one that we want, so much, to work well.
Unfortunately, multiple problems mean the film just does not live up to these hopes.
