Derek Stettler is a Swiss-American filmmaker and writer. Born in February, 1992, he was raised in Santa Barbara but attended high school in Houston, Texas. Dissatisfied with his education, he returned to Santa Barbara after his sophomore year and tested out of high school to attend Santa Barbara City College exclusively. It was during the summer after graduating high school when Derek discovered his love of filmmaking. Foregoing film school, he sought his own path, working in various roles on short films, music videos and commercials, and learning from masters of the craft as he interviewed them for American Cinematographer and Camera Operator magazine. In early 2020, the desire to share his conversations with a wider audience led Derek to launch the Art of the Shot, a filmmaking podcast that dives deep into the minds of celebrated filmmakers. An Associate Member of the Society of Camera Operators since 2015, Derek has also written the script for the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards show in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
