There will be a program of shorts preceding it by cine-magician Oskar Fishinger, whose groundbreaking animations changed the cinematic frontier. The 2022 Taiwan International Documentary Festival (May 6 -15) devotes two of its iconic sections to filmmaking in pandemic times and to the creative use of archival materials in documentary. “Stranger than Documentary” and “DocuMemory”are long-running Tidf sections that have turned into doc film buffs’ favorites for their explorative and avant-garde spirit and unconventional programming.
13 unique new short films will be screened in “Stranger than Documentary: the Potential Future” to highlight the dramatic impact that the Corona pandemic has had not only on people’s lives around the globe, but also on the themes, forms, scope and production methods of filmmaking.
The selected works reflect a wide tableau of impressions, reflections, and innovative filmmaking techniques during the pandemic era, and span North America, Europe, the Philippines, Japan, China, and also Taiwan. As the pandemic has confined people’s movement, filmmakers began to turn to their private lives and daily routines. A...

A fifth of the way into the 21st Century, average life expectancy in Turkey is 78 (in the UK it’s 81). That seems like a long time to the very young; only in growing old do people begin to realise how short it is; and yet when we consider all time time that lies to either side of it, all that has happened before and all that will happen afterwards, the effect is dizzying. Deniz Tortum’s poetic ode to the hospital where he was born opens with a shot of medical personnel crowded around a supine body. The camera nudges through them, daring us to catch glimpses of what’s going on, then suddenly confronts it in totality. This is a human body, but not what we expected. Semi-mummified, it must be many years, perhaps many centuries old. As doctors pry it apart and try to tease out its secrets,...

Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?” and Azra Deniz Okyay’s “Ghosts” won best film in the international and national competitions, respectively, at Turkey’s Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, the 57th edition of which concluded on Saturday.
Unable to attend the festival due to the pandemic, Žbanić sent a video message in which she said: “This film came about through the collaboration of nine different countries. I emphasize this because I think now, more than ever, we need to show that we’re trying to understand each other better by telling our different stories together. This award will help the film to be watched by more people, as well as bringing us together through our love of cinema and for each other.”
Iranian director Massoud Bakhshi won best director for “Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness.” Natasa Stork won best actress for “Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time.

This was my eighth (!) year attending the True/False Film Fest, and the first during which I wasn’t in a continuously 100% optimal mood — not the festival’s fault, attributable instead to the foul ambient fug emanating from the White House. I’ve written about my skepticism/aversion towards the “now more than ever art must lead the resistance” school of thought and was in no mood for any such films; instead, I was jolted by a series of works about the frequent futility of such practices. Carmine Grimaldi and Deniz Tortum’s half-hour If Only There Were Peace is a documentary about making a narrative film, […]...

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...
