In keeping with our celebration of metal and anime here on Crunchyroll News, it's time to turn our attention to another band that's been influenced by the medium of anime in their creative process: Within Destruction. The Slovenia rockers sat down with me to chat about their latest single, "Animetal," and how their inspirations from anime have come to life. And what better way to do that than by premiering the music video for the song, right now, exclusively on Crunchyroll News? Check out the full interview below, where drummer Luka Vezzosi, vocalist Rok Rupnik, and guitarist Howie Fang break down their anime origins, but not before checking out the music video for "Animetal" right here: Can you tell me a little about your anime journey? How it started and where you are now? Did different members of the band have different pathways into anime? Luka: Everything started for...

That’s the magic of Miku. Richie’s Cafe in Philadelphia isn’t just a local student hub, it now proudly can say it was the first North American Hatsune Miku collab cafe. When Richie’s Cafe’s Operational Manager, Tarik Dzemaili, came up with the idea to create a collab with Crypton Future Media’s Hatsune Miku, he never expected them to respond to his request, “It was a shot in the dark. I sent them an email not expecting a reply. But I got a reply the next day.” Related: Hatsune Miku is On...

Image via Intergalactic Bound Music Video Four years ago, Coachella made the announcement that the one and only Hatsune Miku would be appearing on the first day of the 2020 festival alongside artists like Rage Against The Machine, Megan Thee Stallion, Madeon and many others. But due to the global pandemic , the Indio-going masses were not blessed with hearing Miku. On January 16, Coachella announced their 2024 festival lineup with Miku finally making her appearance on the Saturday of the event, held on April 13 and 20. Alongside Miku, other notable Japanese artists will join the music festival, including Yoasobi on Friday April 12 and 19, and Atarashii Gakko! on Sunday April 14 and 21. Presale tickets for Coachella go on sale, for those lucky enough to secure them, starting on Friday, January 19. At the virtual Burning Man festival this year was an electronic artist named Xen — an emerging act who gave a trippy digital DJ set while dark, metallic tendrils surrounded the booth. The show wasn’t out of the norm for Edm. But Xen herself is — because she isn’t alive.

Climate change has never been one singular enemy. But the ability to fully comprehend the threat of the climate crisis has become nearly impossible as it grows exponentially worse. You can’t just chalk it up to oil spills or plastic bags (not that you ever could) — the climate crisis is as omnipresent as the air we breathe and the food we consume every day. When faced with a challenge so all-encompassing as the rapid destruction of our planet, there’s a temptation to make it all easier to digest...

France has a burgeoning eco-system of virtual reality and augmented reality producers, and is one of Europe’s leading Vr/Ar hubs. The UniFrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, a showcase of French projects that wraps Monday, included a Vr/Ar showcase, with recent projects demonstrated by Wide Management Vr, VRrOOm and Atlas V. UniFrance’s online MyFrenchFilm Festival also includes three Vr projects – “The Scream,” by Sandra Paugam and Charles Ayats, “Isle of the Dead” by Benjamin Nuel, and “A Bar at the Folies Bergère” by Gabrielle Lissot. Variety looks at this emerging sector.
UniFrance published studies in 2018 and 2019 on foreign sales for the country’s Vr sector, which revealed that there were 109 foreign sales of Vr titles in 2017, generating total sales of €41,963, and 204 foreign sales in 2018, with total sales of $240,000. UniFrance emphasizes that these results show that the market remains embryonic, but notes that French sales agents such as MK2 Films,...

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will host a new holographic performer this year — but it won’t be Tupac, or any other deceased musician. On Thursday night, Japanese holographic performer Hatsune Miku was announced as part of the festival’s 2020 lineup, scheduled to perform April 10th on Weekend 1 and April 17th on Weekend 2.
To Western audiences unfamiliar with Hatsune Miku or her uninterrupted success in Japan — she’s routinely sold out arenas in the country for more than a decade — her origins can sound like something out of a sci-fi novel.

In film and video games, we’ve already seen what’s possible with ‘digital humans’. Are we on the brink of the world’s first totally virtual acting star?
When you’re watching a modern blockbuster such as The Avengers, it’s hard to escape the feeling that what you’re seeing is almost entirely computer-generated imagery, from the effects to the sets to fantastical creatures. But if there’s one thing you can rely on to be 100% real, it’s the actors. We might have virtual pop stars like Hatsune Miku, but there has never been a world-famous virtual film star.
Even that link with corporeal reality, though, is no longer absolute. You may have already seen examples of what’s possible: Peter Cushing (or his image) appearing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story more than 20 years after his death, or Tupac Shakur performing from beyond the grave...

The words “hologram tour” conjure images of a cold, dystopian future. Video of the Japanese concert sensation Hatsune Miku looks a bit like a scene from Blade Runner 2049. The Tupac hologram is still surreal. And the technology could give Kiss the ability to launch final tours in every city every night into infinity, should they adopt it. One artist whom the practice makes complete sense for, though, is Frank Zappa. A few years before he died, he wrote in his autobiography that he would love to roll out what...

Bandai Namco’s colorful rhythm game series “Taiko no Tatsujin,” known to Western gamers as “Taiko: Drum Master,” is coming westward for its first English-language release in 14 years. Fans can look forward to two new games scheduled for a November release: “Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!” for Nintendo Switch and “Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session!” for PlayStation 4. Interestingly, the series won’t be going back to the Westernized “Taiko: Drum Master” moniker bestowed upon it when the game and drum peripheral first debuted in 2004 on PlayStation 2.
“Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!” will make proper use of the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controllers as it allows players to drum in the air to a wide variety of different songs culled from video games and anime series. The opening to zany parody anime “Pop Team Epic” as well as familiar hits like “Dragon Ball Z’s” “Cha-La Head Cha-La” is...

Attendees at this year’s Polymanga were treated to a performance by “Splatoon 2’s” Off the Hook, a pair of pop idols who host a news program at the start of Nintendo’s paint-centric shooter and appear at in-game Splatfest events.
Polymanga is an annual convention celebrating Japanese manga, anime, and video games. It takes place during Easter in the Montreux Music & Convention Centre in Switzerland.
Backed by human musicians, the holographic divas entertained the crowd with songs from the “Splatoon 2” soundtrack and a plethora of ocean puns. They were followed by the original “Splatoon” hosts, the Squid Sisters. This was their second “live” appearance. They previously performed during the Japanese “Splatoon 2” 2018 Championships at Tokaigi.
Virtual idols called “vocaloids” are popular in Japan. The biggest example is Hatsune Miku, who made her U.S. debut on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 2014. Yes, it was awkward.
