Dilvin Asaad and Bianca Delbravo in Paradise Is Burning
Mika Gustafson's narrative feature debut, Paradise Is Burning, co-written by Alexander Öhrstrand, revolves around three sisters, 16-year-old Laura (Bianca Delbravo), 12-year-old Mira (Dilvin Asaad) and seven-year-old Steffi (Safira Mossberg), who are left to fend for themselves by their absent mother. With summer fast approaching and left unsupervised, the three sisters enjoy their freedom, living a wild and carefree existence. However, when social services schedule a meeting, Laura must find someone to impersonate their mother, while keeping the threat of social services a secret from Mira and Steffi.
Gustafson's previous works include the 2017 feature documentary, Silvana - Väck Mig När Ni Vaknat, about the Swedish artist and feminist, Silvana Imam, which she co-directed with Olivia Kastebring and Christina Tsiobanelis. Her shorts include Secretly Filmed My Boyfriend After We Had a Fight, which confronted the camera's invasive gaze, and Mephobia (2017) about.

NewFest, the New York-set Lgbtq film festival that is celebrating its 30th year, has unveiled its full linuep of movies ahead of its run October 24-30. As previously announced, the fest opens with Yen Tan’s AIDS drama 1985 starring Gotham‘s Corey Michael Smith, The Gifted‘s Jamie Chung, Aidan Langford, Virginia Madsen and Michael Chiklis.
This year’s slate includes the New York Centerpiece screening of the Matt Smith-starring Mapplethorpe; the Telluride-bowing Boy Erased starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges as the U.S. Centerpiece; and the International Centerpiece Rafiki, Wanuri Kahiu’s pic that has been banned in its native Keyna for centering on a relationship between two women.
Also on tap is the Documentary Centerpiece film Dykes, Camera, Action. The fest will close with Robert Clift and Hillary Demmon’s Making Montgomery Clift.

Nordisk Panorama takes place on Sept 20-25 in Malmo, Sweden.
Nordisk Panorama has confirmed the films in its two juried competitions, for Best Nordic Documentary and Best Nordic Short Film, for its Sept 20-25 festival in Malmo, Sweden.
The Best Nordic Documentary prize comes with $12,900 sponsored by the Nordic public broadcasters Dr, Yle, Ruv, Nrk and Svt.
Those 15 films include The Raft, which already won the top prize at Cph:Dox; and The Distant Barking of Dogs, which has won a slew of awards at festivals including San Fransicso, Thessaloniki, Goteborg, Idfa, Dokfest Munich and Oslo.

At an awards ceremony held in Swedish capital Stockholm last night (Jan 22), The Nile Hilton Incident was the surprise big winner of the 2018 edition of the Guldbagge Awards, Sweden’s primary film awards ceremony.

Kristina Åberg’s crime drama, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, triumphed over Ruben Ostlund’s The Square, the 2017 Palme d’Or winner at Cannes.
Ostlund did take home best director from the ceremony, and his film also picked up the best cinematography prize for Fredrik Wenzel.
The Nile Hilton Incident won five prizes overall, scooping best actor for Fares Fares, best costume design for Louize Nissen, best sound design for Fredrik Jonsäter, and best set design for Roger Rosenberg.
