We always knew it was going to be good – but for Mark Tremonti (lead shredder of Alter Bridge and ex-Creed co-founder) to top his phenomenal first solo album, that was would have to be something mighty special indeed.
Luckily, when you’ve got one of the best melodic minds in modern metal (try saying that ten times fast) you don’t do things by half, and from the positively furious opening riff of Radical Change, through the soaring vocals of the title track and the unabashedly epic Fall Again or Providence, Cauterize is one Hell of an album.
Genre-wise it ticks boxes left, right and centre – seriously, when things like the mid-point breakdown of Tie the Noose kick in, no volume setting on earth can do it justice – easily slotting into everything from heavy metal to hard rock, with plenty experimental song structures and everything in between...

You know when you come across a band who just have wall-to-wall phenomenal material, every fan’s going to have their own favourite choruses, vocal moments, guitar solos and more – but it’s always fun to delve in and pick some favourites; a definitive top 10 you could recommend to everyone.
For Alter Bridge it’s been one hell of a ride getting to the top, with heavy metal-loving lead guitarist Mark Tremonti slowly injecting more crushing rhythms into the band’s work as vocalist Myles Kennedy’s becomes more accustomed to playing in front of huge stadium-sized audiences fronting Slash’s newest outfit, birthing a combination whose confidence shows more and more in everything they do.
Backed by one of the tightest rhythm sections in the business in drummer Scott ‘Flip’ Philips and Brian Marshall on bass, 2013’s Fortress is their most accomplished and experimental work so far...

Digital artist: Justin Metz. Puppets: Bob & Kathy Burns / Prop Store.Empire has wrangled our fair share of reunions, from Goonies to Hobbits via the Three Amigos. But celebrating 30 years of Gremlins — the monster-movie phenomenon that introduced the world to a chittering furball called Gizmo and his considerably less cute progeny — proved the biggest challenge yet. It took months to track down a batch of Gremlins, since the scaly green puppets created by Chris Walas and Rick Baker for the two films have been scattered to the winds. As for Gizmo? "Well, he drinks," deadpans director Joe Dante. "He got quite a swell head by the second movie. You'll notice he hasn't worked since.

John McTiernan shot exclusively for Empire at his Wyoming ranch by Austin Hargrave. One of the unalloyed joys of Issue 300 of Empire – now available for purchase – is beleaguered director John McTiernan opening up his Wyoming ranch, and his memory banks, for an exclusive interview that spans everything from directorial landmarks like Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October to his herd of 'beefalo' and a close encounter with a rattlesnake. Within that heady mix also comes news that, while under lock and key in Yankton prison last year, he wrote a sequel to his 1999 heist flick The Thomas Crown Affair, entitled Thomas Crown And The Missing Lioness.“Nebuchadnezzar had two lion statues commissioned in 1100Bc: a male and a female,” explained McTiernan of the title’s provenance. “Alexander the Great took them when he conquered Persia. Mark Antony had them taken to Rome. Constantine moved them to Constantinople. And...

Even when he's not the one doing the shooting, David O. Russell, an Oscar nominee twice-over for American Hustle, is directing. Russell -- known for his highly kinetic directorial style -- was in perpetual motion and in full orchestrator mode while we shot him for the cover of The Hollywood Reporter's Feb. 14 issue. And though this presented minor challenges for photographer Austin Hargrave and THR Photo Director Jennifer Laski, the end photographic result -- intense but playful, with plenty of coiled energy -- is much like Russell's filmmaking.
