After weeks of waiting to hear of Arsene Wenger’s fate, surely this latest defeat is the time he tells the world what he has decided. For me it is clear, he must be calling it a day at Arsenal. He had the opportunity to confirm he was staying after the West Brom game a few weeks back. The fact he left the fans and media waiting by saying ‘I’ve made my decision’ was just a way of biding more time before the inevitable.
The 3-0 defeat at Palace surely is the result in which he answers the million dollar question. It’s all becoming a bit farcical at Arsenal. The icing on the cake was Walcott’s comment ‘We are back to our best’ after taking 60 minutes to break the deadlock against Premier League strugglers West Ham at home, to then lose at Selhurst Park. Manchester City are set to enter a new era this summer when the most sought-after manager in world football, Pep Guardiola, arrives at the club.
However, the City squad is in dire need of an overhaul, and this is set to be Guardiola’s most difficult job to date.
Pellegrini currently has the second oldest squad in the Premier League available to him, behind West Brom, and Guardiola will need to bring in a host of new players to enhance the squad and replace certain players who are now past their sell by date.
There are two clear problems that the current Bayern Munich boss must address: centre back and centre midfield.
When captain Vincent Kompany is not in the side, the Manchester City defence is nothing short of a shambles. No matter what combination of Nicolas Otamendi, Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis is sent out by Pellegrini,...

On Saturday February 27th, Alan Pardew took his horribly out-of-sorts Palace side north to the Hawthorns to face former Palace manager Tony Pulis’ West Brom in front of Sky’s cameras for the evening kick-off.
Palace would be hoping to capitalise on their shock 1-0 Fa Cup win over Spurs the previous Sunday and cement a turn-around in their fortunes. Before this game they had gone nine games without a win in the league and were yet to score two goals in a game (in the league) in 2016.
West Brom’s form has been up and down all season and this was punctuated by their previous two results. An impressive 1-0 win away at Everton in the league was followed by a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Championship side Reading in the Fa Cup that culminated in one of their own fans throwing a...

A hapless Everton failed to make it three league wins in a row for the first time in almost two years, as West Bromwich Albion left Goodison Park with a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
The Baggies’ first win in six came in smash-and-grab fashion. Tony Pulis’s side had their backs to the wall for much of the encounter, but took the lead against the run of play when Jonas Olsson’s looping header from a corner eluded Blues keeper Joel Robles.
West Brom striker Salomon Rondon attempted to claim the goal after connected with the ball as it hit the Everton net, but replays showed that it had already crossed the line.
What followed was a tumultuous stream of one-way traffic coloured Blue as the Toffees laid siege towards the away goal. When they did find a way through the Baggies air-tight defence, the woodwork thwarted them,...

In the least surprising development of transfer deadline day, West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has confirmed once more that Saido Berahino isn’t for sale at any price, as reported by Sky Sports News HQ.
Obviously there is still time before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm, but at this stage it would surely take something major for Peace to let his most valuable asset leave to a relegation rival.
Sky Sports say Peace is confident that they will not see a drop in valuation for the England forward, even if he continues not to play presumably and they clearly have no financial worries if they’re turning down more than £20m for a player who has largely sat on the bench recently.
Meanwhile, Rmc have confirmed that Marseille are going to follow up their baffling loan acquisition of Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher by...

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Seydou Doumbia on loan until the end of the season, subject to the player receiving the appropriate visa.
The Ivory Coast international is United’s fourth signing of a successful January transfer window – following Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet and Andros Townsend to St James’ Park – and could join on a permanent deal in the summer for a fee of around £7 million.
The 28-year-old, who scored an impressive 66 goals in 108 league games for Cska Moscow, signed for Italian side Roma last January in a deal worth a reported £11.9 million. However, after making only 14 appearances for i Giallorossi, he was loaned back to Russia at the start of the 2015/16 season.
Now, he’ll be looking to spearhead a Magpies attack that has missed a number of gilt-edged opportunities over the festive period that has left them two points adrift in the Premier League relegation battle.

In football these days it’s not unusual for someone who had no success on the pitch to be a genius in the dugout. Many of the most successful managers in the modern game barely know how to kick a ball. Sir Alex Ferguson may have had a modestly successful career as a striker but the likes of Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson achieved nothing in the game before turning to management.
Why is that so many world class managers never played a high level, while so many world class players can’t seem to manage their way out of a paper bag? We may never know the reason, but maybe we can study the most egregious examples of managerial laughing stocks to find out why these legendary players failed so badly at management.

Who would have thought that Newcastle would be heading into the third week of the transfer window accredited with significant interest in signing their second and third English internationals of the window?
If the Magpies can build on the impressive transfers of both Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet to add more creativity and goals to the side, they will have had a good transfer window. Obviously some questions still rise over the defence, but with a stronger midfield the occasional major lapses by Fabricio Coloccini and his young sidekick Chancel Mbemba should be minimised. Plus Colo does still have world-beating games in him.
The news today is that Newcastle have now been made strong favourites (1/4) to sign Tottenham’s wide man Andros Townsend, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to the North East in the past week. West Brom are currently at 6/1 and Sunderland 12/1 in the race for his signature.

After the year Newcastle United have had on the pitch, you would have been forgiven for thinking that we’d be hard pressed to find five individual performances that were worth writing home about.
Despite Steve McClaren, his new backroom team, and over £50 million worth of signings heralding what we all thought was a new dawn at St James’ Park, Newcastle followed a worrying trend all year long that doesn’t look like leaving the squad any time soon.
There’s a losing mentality around NE1 at the moment. It’s solely in Mike Ashley’s hands whether that leaves or not. You don’t need me to tell you how he can do that…
The Magpies managed to win just eight games throughout a year that nearly saw them relegated to the Championship, prevented only by a Jonas Gutierrez inspired final day win over West Ham,...

If there’s one thing we can gleam from Steve McClaren inexplicably fielding the same 11 on Monday just two days after a gruelling 90 minutes against Everton, it’s that he doesn’t believe he has an actual squad of players at Newcastle United he can trust.
The game after the boxing day fixtures is historically the match where you would usually rotate but it saw the likes of Florian Thauvin, Siem De Jong, Cheick Tiote and Yoan Gouffran stationary on the bench at the first whistle, and you just have to wonder if McClaren has given up on anyone outside his first 11-13 men.
Against Arsenal today, the safe bet would once again be on Newcastle being unchanged though McClaren is forced into one move with a hamstring injury seeing Vurnon Anita sidelined, with Tiote expected to be his replacement. Rob Elliott is also a huge...

With their aerial defensive frailties once again on display in yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to West Brom, Newcastle United are today being linked with a new giant centre-half.
A report in the Daily Mirror (via Teamtalk) claims that McClaren is eying 6 foot 5 inches tall Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly as a January transfer window acquisition.
The 24-year-old Sengalese international has been in terrific form this season, helping Napoli become surprise Serie A challenges, currently sitting pretty only one point behind leaders Inter Milan at almost the half way stage of the season.
Reports suggest Koulibaly has an £8 million transfer fee release clause and Geordie boss Steve McClaren is keen to trigger it, pushing through a deal for the new defender to add much needed physical presence and competition alongside Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba.
Koulibaly had been a target for Norwich City over the summer but a...
