Nearly eight months have gone by since we heard that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) was set to star in the sci-fi thriller Ursa Major with Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) – but now Deadline has revealed that Winstead had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. Taking over the role that had previously been assigned to Winstead is Jessica Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003).
Twin brother directors Jonathan and Josh Baker are at the helm of Ursa Major, working from a screenplay written by Colleen O’Brien, Katie French, and Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville. That trio crafted the story of Charlie (Biel) and Natalie (Gomez), a mother and daughter pair of survivors trapped on a harsh Earth-like planet. Jessica Biel (“The Sinner,” The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) has been set to star alongside Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Ursa Major, Deadline reports today.
The thriller hails from twin brother directors Jonathan and Josh Baker (Kin) and is scheduled to head into production this fall.
Ursa Major takes place “on an Earth-like planet, where a mother (Biel) and daughter (Gomez) fight for survival while hiding from a group of relentless hunters. With the added threat of an imminent and deadly storm, Natalie — now a teenager — begins questioning her mother, Charlie, about who they really are, how they got here, and what they need to do to survive.”
Based on that premise and the team behind it, it feels safe to assume there will be surprises and potential twists in store for the mother and daughter as they attempt to evade their pursuers.

Shamima Begum was certainly deluded in the past, but she’s definitely been disabused of any fantasies about redemption and forgiveness now. Maybe that’s what being stateless and spending four years in detention in Syria does to someone. Towards the end of the BBC’s gripping The Shamima Begum Story, marooned in a camp in the north of the country and still only 23, she acknowledges that she’s never going to able to come back home. Seven years on from her ill-fated journey east, Begum is asked where she thinks she’ll be in seven years’ time. “Here,” she says, without hesitation, “because Isis was the worst thing in the 21st century and I was a part of it and now I have to face the consequences of my actions, and this camp is the consequences of my actions.”
It’s quite hard to read Begum. She presents herself now,...

Macro Television Studios is producing “Swordplay,” a fantasy drama series based on original idea by Jonathan and Josh Baker. The Baker brothers developed the series alongside Macro, Hebru Brantley and Eric Phillips. Lucien Christian Adderly and Richard “Byrd” Wilson serve as series creators, and Glen Mazzara will showrun.
“Swordplay” follows a sheltered teen and his newly befriended Hypebeast crew as they lace up their retro kicks and go for glory with an ancient sword used to defeat otherworldly creatures on the streets of LA.
A veteran showrunner, Mazzara’s credits include “The Shield,” “The Walking Dead” and “Damien.” It is therefore notable that he’s boarded “Swordplay” this early in the process, supporting early-career filmmakers such as the Baker Brothers. The Bakershad their feature film debut with “Kin,” based on their short film “Bag Man.” Jack Reynor, Zoe Kravitz, Dennis Quaid, James Franco and Myles Truitt starred in the feature.

It’s been written in the stars that two stand-out comic book character actors will come together for Ursa Major, an upcoming science-fiction thriller from the Baker Brothers. Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are joining forces for the new project as a mother and daughter duo fighting to survive.
Jonathan and Josh Baker direct Ursa Major, featuring the story of Charlie (Winstead) and Natalie (Gomez), a mother and daughter pair of survivors trapped on a harsh Earth-like planet. As a deadly storm heads toward the planetoid, the duo avoids encroaching elements, crazed hunters, and more. While Natalie has always trusted her mother, she’s beginning to question the strategies they’ve used to survive and thinks it might be time to change who leads the charge.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers through the finale of Peacock’s “Dr. Death.”)
Hubris? Improper training? Malicious intent? Ignorance? Negligence? There are a lot of explanations proposed for why the real-life subject of Peacock’s “Dr. Death” limited series, neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch (played by Joshua Jackson), maimed and killed so many patients who came in for complex but routine procedures. In the show’s finale, it falls to assistant district attorney Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb) to convince a jury that it wasn’t primarily Duntsch’s poor training, but his own nature that made him harm these people — just as the real Shughart did when she got Duntsch sentenced to life in prison in 2017 on an elder abuse charge against one of his patients.
But what do the actors who inhabited these roles think of the real Duntsch, who was accused of injuring 33 out of 38 patients in less than...

It doesn’t hurt that he’s been inspired by a few of the entertainment industry’s most successful and formidable talents, including LeBron James and Jay-Z.
In the new cover story for Vanity Fair, Jordan’s big ambitions are top of mind, including his plan to be, in the words of journalist Joe Hagan, nothing less than “a one-man movie studio whose every move has a dollar sign attached to it and for whom nothing is left to chance.” Jordan is well on his way to that, too, bolstered by “multi-million-dollar endorsement deals, his own production company, and a new marketing-and-consulting start-up in the works.”

Update: Lionsgate/Summit’s Hellboy is no longer going in the busy post-holiday frame of Jan. 11 next year, but rather will open on April 12. The first Hellboy from Guillermo del Toro was an April release 14 years ago opening to $23.1M at the domestic B.O. and ending its run at $59.6M.
Hellboy moves away from Fox’s Ad Astra, Stx’s wide expansion of The Upside and Sony’s A Dog’s Way Home to a weekend where it’s up against Universal’s family pic The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, Fox’s drama Breakthrough and Aviron’s After. [Editor’s note: This post contains major spoilers for “Kin.”]
When Jonathan and Josh Baker’s feature-length debut, the imaginative sci-fi thriller “Kin,” unspools its final ten minutes, it comes packed with some genuine surprises. It’s not just that the film’s finale adds a new dimension to the story that has preceded it or that it opens up the possibility for a film franchise, but it’s who makes both of those things possible. It’s all thanks to a surprise cameo from one of Hollywood’s hottest actors, a star who doesn’t just appear in the film, but also executive produced it, totally in secret.
“This is a secret we’re trying to keep until opening weekend, and it’s already been real tough to do it,” Jonathan Baker told IndieWire in a recent interview.
Even fans of the film’s initial inspiration — the 2014 short film “Bag Man,” which the brothers wrote and directed — will likely be surprised by what happens.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is doing crazy well.
The Constance Wu-starrer is likely to threepeat as the box office topper over the Labor Day weekend, with $30 million for the four-day period. It’s projected to bring in $23 million Friday through Sunday.
The Warner Bros. rom-com will join “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Black Panther,” and “Avengers: Infinity War” as the fourth film of 2018 to top the box office three weekends in a row. It’s earned $101 million worldwide in its first 17 days.
Jason Statham’s “The Meg” is still swimming laps around the competition with a projected $12 million for the holiday weekend. The shark thriller from Warner Bros. has so far earned $112 million domestically and an additional $306 million from overseas markets.
Landing in the third place slot should be “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” adding another $8 million to its tally. Tom Cruise’s latest has amassed $198 million from North America, plus $355 million internationally.

A radical expansion of their well-received 2014 short “Bag Man,” siblings Jonathan and Josh Baker’s debut feature “Kin” returns to the earlier film’s gritty, somewhat downbeat juvenile character study, while expanding the fantasy action it deployed as a surprise ending. The results are, in artistic terms, a modest success. In commercial terms, it’s a dicier prospect — viewers expecting the kind of bigger-budget spectacle that typically ensues when a screen teenager stumbles into sci-fi situations may be befuddled by what’s primarily a medium-scaled road trip drama with thriller elements … and a very special ray gun.
While sufficiently offbeat and well-handled to be engaging, “Kin” ends up playing, a bit oddly, as a de facto prequel for an as-yet-nonexistent, and far more grandiose series — à la “Star Wars” — which this hopeful introductory chapter may not rouse enough interest to make happen.

On television, “Kin” could have been a successful backdoor pilot about two estranged brothers, two motorcycle-riding Daft Punk copycats, a heavily-tattooed James Franco, and the road trip that brings them all together.
On film, it has all of the weird, irresponsible potential of a “Boondock Saints” franchise, insisting that there’s something substantial, cultural climate be damned, in its punky adolescent fantasy about an orphaned black kid who finds a laser pistol. Featuring Dennis Quaid, Zoe Kravitz and Carrie Coon in roles that define “thankless” as Jack Reynor (“Sing Street”) and newcomer Myles Truitt (“Queen Sugar”) soldier bravely through misshapen rhythms of quasi-futuristic fraternal bonding, “Kin” feels like a level up for its co-directors from a short film that was too ambitiously envisioned as a franchise.

Chicago – The tagline for the new film “Kin” is “No force is stronger than family,” and who would know that better than a couple of twin brother filmmakers. Josh and Jonathan Baker make their feature film debut with this gritty sci-fi action picture, and create a new direction and style for the genre.
“Kin” features Jimmy (Jack Reynor) and Eli (Myles Truitt) as brothers, and Dennis Quaid as their Dad in a Detroit working class family, whose fortunes are swayed by Jimmy’s ex-con status… he owes a gangland leader (James Franco) a large debt. In the meantime, Eli – the family’s adopted African American sibling – makes a discovery while pilfering wire from a closed Detroit factory. It is a strange kind of weapon, that works only in his hands. When Jimmy tries a robbery to settle his debt, he and Eli must go on the run, with the weapon in tow.

"I want you to be careful around him." Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for a badass new sci-fi action film titled Kin, from filmmaker brothers Jonathan Baker & Josh Baker. You may recognize this because it's a feature-length version of their short film Bag Man, which we featured here back in 2014 when it first debuted. Kin is about an ex-con and his adopted brother who go on the run with a deadly, awesome, futuristic weapon. Jack Reynor and Myles Truitt star, and the film's impressive full cast includes Carrie Coon, James Franco, Zoë Kravitz, Dennis Quaid, and Romano Orzari. This footage looks great and I'm so down for this. I'm also very happy to see another sci-fi short we wrote about previously turned into a movie that looks so cool, it's always an exciting success story in the movie biz. Fire up the first trailer below. Here's the first...

A villainous James Franco gets what’s coming to him in the new trailer for Lionsgate’s upcoming science-fiction thriller “Kin,” starring Jack Reynor, Myles Truitt, Zoe Kravitz, and Dennis Quaid.
Truitt portrays the younger adopted brother of a recently released ex-con, played by Reynor, and the object of pursuit by Franco’s grinning villain. Truitt’s Eli finds a mysterious weapon, shaped a bit like a briefcase and possessing mystical powers, and that weapon becomes the brothers’ sole protection as they try to evade Franco and federal agents — after Eli zaps Franco’s criminal with the extraterrestrial weapon.
“I know I’m not a good guy, but it’s been pretty incredible to be brothers for the first time,” Reynor tells Truitt in trailer.
Lionsgate bought the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 while it was in pre-production. The film is financed by No Trace Camping. Daniel Casey wrote the script,...

Carrie Coon’s steady slide into sci-fi territory — including a surprise role in this week’s “Avengers: Infinity War” — appears to be continuing apace, thanks to an intriguing new role in the sci-fi action thriller, “Kin.” The film is the feature directorial debut of brothers Jonathan and Josh Baker, based on their short film “Bag Man,” which debuted at SXSW in 2015.
The film follows a young teenager (Myles Truitt) and his adopted brother (Jack Reynor), who are forced to go on the lam when a baddie criminal (James Franco), along with a pack of federal agents (including Coon!), and what’s billed as “otherworldly soldiers” start chasing after them. What’s all the fuss? A mysterious weapon that the brothers possess, one that might not be entirely of this world. The feature will expand out the short’s concept, adding in Reynor’s big brother character, along with Dennis Quaid...
