Norby Williamson, the ESPN veteran who has managed everything from NFL coverage to “SportsCenter,” is leaving the Disney sports-media giant abruptly just weeks after being called out on camera in a surprise and unprecedented outburst by daytime host Pat McAfee.
The McAfee contretemps is not at the root of Williamson’s departure, according to a person familiar with the matter, but rather disagreements between the executive and the longer-term strategy being devised by Burke Magnus, who was handed oversight of content and news production in March of last year.
“Almost 40 years ago in 1985, I was so very fortunate to be offered an opportunity at ESPN,: Williamson said in a statement that was issued in a memo to staffers Friday. “Due to the exceptional hard work, creativity and commitment of the people of ESPN, and to a much lesser extent my contributions, I’d like to think we’ve left...

Update, with video: Joy Reid, caught on a hot mic last week seeming to criticize President Joe Biden by suggesting he was threatening to start “another f*cking war,” the MSNBC host appeared on ABC’s The View today and attempted to clarify her comment.
Asked by View co-host Sarah Haines whether the hot mic comment was criticizing Biden, Reid at first offered a joking “cute no comment” before expounding on the matter.
“I’m a Red Letter Christian,” she said, referring to the non-denominational social justice movement that emphasizes the actual words of Jesus – traditionally printed in red ink in Bibles. “I don’t believe in war, whether it’s the Governor in Texas literally trying to start another Civil War over an issue that his party could solve tomorrow – there’s literally a bill that they could pass and do the border issue – or whether it’s in the Middle East.

MSNBC host Joy Reid apologized to viewers after a hot mic caught her using the f-word during a segment on the border.
On Monday evening’s The ReidOut, Reid introduced a segment in which video was played of a speech in which President Joe Biden called for congressional passage of a border bill, despite former President Donald Trump’s efforts to scuttle such a deal.
The clips showed Biden saying that “if that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border now and I’d fix it quickly.” He also said that “Congress needs to get it done.”
Then, Reid could be heard saying, “starting another f—ing war.”
Reid then told viewers, “Still trying to kill the deal,” an apparent reference to Trump.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid apologized Monday after a hot mic caught her cursing during a moment she described as “behind-the-scenes chatter.”
The F-bomb was picked up during a segment titled “Republicans take credit for stuff they voted against,” in which the Reid Out host railed against Congressional Republicans who “love to latch on to President Biden and Democrats’ successful policies and take credit for things they didn’t do, while tying themselves into pretzels… for the sake of Donald Trump. Joy Reid had a hot mic moment during MSNBC’s “The Reid Out” on Monday night and later apologized for her remarks, which included the f-bomb.

“Case in point: fixing what they say is a crisis at the border, with Congressional negotiators continuing work on a bipartisan deal to tie border policy changes to funding for Ukraine,” she continued. “Over the weekend, President Biden said he’s ready to take action if Congress is serious about solving the border issue.”

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

If you follow politics or regularly consume the news, you might feel like Donald Trump is all around you. As you read this, you might well be imagining, with unsettling precision, the former president’s voice billowing filth and invective in your brain.
Chris Hayes, the MSNBC primetime host, thinks about Trump a lot — and he’s sick of it. “It’s a kind of prison,” he tells Rolling Stone of his, and the nation’s, preoccupation with the former president.
Yet, Hayes says, the media needs to cover Trump more.

In a segment on his primetime show Tuesday, Fox News host Jesse Watters asserted that the mainstream media censored former president Donald Trump’s Iowa victory speech and that it plans more censorship in the future.
Leading Republican presidential contender Trump was conciliatory in his Iowa victory speech — at least as close to it as he ever comes — talking about the “good time together” he had running alongside Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
“That’s the racist insurrectionist who’s going to Seal Team 6 his enemies? I don’t think so,” Watters added after playing Trump’s comments.
The Fox News host alleged that “mass censorship’s next,” displaying a graphic with Trump’s mouth covered up with red tape and the phrase “Mass censorship campaign.”
“Last night, CNN dumped out of Trump’s victory speech when he mentioned the border,” Watters asserted.

Megyn Kelly gave her best impersonation of MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell while mocking his comments about how GOP voters overwhelmingly agree with Donald Trump’s claims that migrants from the southern border are “poisoning” the country.
During their discussion of Trump’s Iowa Republican caucus win on Kelly’s podcast “The Megyn Kelly Show,” video of which you can watch above, the host and her co-hosts Stu Burguiere and Dave Marcus also chatted about Trump’s “poisoning” remarks, which he initially made during a rally in New Hampshire back in December.
“[Trump] said this thing about immigrants are poisoning the blood, and there’s a real question about whether some of the immigrants coming across our southern border are — we know they are — bringing fentanyl into this country and literally poisoning the blood. Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

In a December cover story for Vogue, the Grammy-winning rapper opened up about motherhood, returning to music with her newest album Pink Friday 2, and the stresses of high-profile fame. During the discussion, Minaj briefly addressed her criticized social media statements, which included her posting an alleged experience from an unnamed friend of a cousin.

MSNBC has pushed back against a Semafor report that it sidelined Muslim anchors Mehdi Hasan, Ayman Mohyeldin, and Ali Velshi while covering the Israel-Hamas war.
“We have and will continue to cover the barbaric terrorist attacks on defenseless civilians in Israel last weekend and the tragic war it has provoked thoroughly and in all their dimensions,” an NBCU News Group spokesperson told TheWrap on Monday.
A network source denied that Hasan, Velshi, and Mohyeldin were “benched” or “silenced” over their beliefs on the conflict, saying there was “no truth” to those reports.
Velshi has been reporting from the ground in Israel and served as anchor from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Mohyeldin has appeared on multiple MSNBC programs throughout the network’s coverage of the war. He was in the anchor chair from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and appeared Monday on “Katy Tur Reports.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom will get his second opportunity to appoint a U.S. senator with the death of the Golden State’s senior stateswoman on Thursday — putting him in a position he said he dreaded earlier this month. “I don’t want to make another appointment,” he told Meet The Press’s Chuck Todd. “I don’t think the people of California want me to make another appointment.”
In December 2020, Newsom appointed Alex Padilla, then California’s secretary of state, to fill the opening created by Kamala Harris’ ascension to the vice presidency.

A major transition at the top of a big company typically spells significant change. Just ask anyone who has worked for CNN while parent company WarnerMedia passed along to AT&T and then the new Warner Bros. Discovery.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A prominent TV reporter walks into a bar…
A handful of the news anchors at MSNBC recently held a dinner to welcome Ana Cabrera, the former CNN journalist, to the network, where she has taken the reins of its 10 a.m. hour. Chris Jansing and Katy Tur, familiar faces to MSNBC viewers, were holding court, but Andrea Mitchell, a legendary Washington correspondent who has anchored an early afternoon show on MSNBC since 2008, was missing, due to making an appearance at Henry Kissinger’s 100th birthday.
“I thought a 100th birthday party for somebody would end early,” Mitchell confesses. “But it didn’t.”
Cabrera, Jansing, Tur, Mitchell have all found time to get together more frequently in recent weeks. They, along with their colleague, José Díaz-Balart, are playing a more critical role at MSNBC — but not in hours when such significance might be expected.

Joy Reid put a pin on Donald Trump’s state of mind Thursday, qualifying him as nothing short of delusional but not quite as a believer in time travel, instead saying his continued social-media ramblings place him firmly in the parallel “Stranger Things” universe of the Upside Down.
Reid, speaking in her monologue for her MSNBC show “The ReidOut,” said the twice-impeached and four-times indicted former president “seems convinced that he can make people believe the world is actually flat. Reid then broke down the day’s developments from Trump’s criminal case in Georgia, where Trump asked that his state election interference case be separated from his 18 codefendants, some of whom are seeking a speedy trial.

In the days following Trump’s mug shot being taken and released to the public, many of his supporters have started claiming that it’s actually helping him win over Black voters. But MSNBC’s Joy Reid tore apart that “amazingly racist” idea on Tuesday night.
To kick off the segment, Reid played a supercut of on-air personalities touting the benefits of Trump’s mug shot, with one man saying that a Black woman he spoke to in New Orleans called Trump a “gangsta,” which apparently “means he has cred among a new block of voters.
The montage ended with Fox News’ Jesse Watters — who previously thirsted over Trump’s mugshot himself, saying “he looks good, and he looks hard” — saying that “the mug shot unintentionally created a bond between Donald Trump and Black Americans,” exemplified by the fact that “my garbage man told me he’s buying mug shot...

Former President Donald Trump’s indictment announcement Tuesday led to a bump in cable news viewership, with MSNBC overtaking Fox News for the primetime crown with 2.63 million viewers.
Trump’s third criminal indictment was announced on Tuesday and included multiple charges of conspiracy and obstruction. The indictment, which is related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 Election, detailed the former President’s actions during the Jan 6. riot.
MSNBC, the only network to broadcast special coverage of the indictment, swept overall primetime figures as the No. 1 most-watched cable news channel. Joy Reid followed the lead Friday night of Vice President Kamala Harris in slamming Florida for guidelines that will require public middle schools to teach students there were benefits to being an American slave.
Reid, speaking to MSNBC viewers on “The ReidOut,” called out the racist requirements of Ron DeSantis’ Department of Education for what they were but went further, explaining the motivations behind them.
“They’re doing it because they want to raise a generation of people who will be conservative enough to give them their damn tax cuts, to give them the money they want and the deregulation they want,” Reid said. “And they’re terrified of young people, because young people already are woke — too late.”
Reid’s show rolled coverage of Harris’ trip to Jacksonville, Florida, and the speech she delivered on Friday. In it, Harris lambasted the notion there were benefits to slavery.

When Sean Hannity handed off his Fox News program to Laura Ingraham last Thursday night, he had company.
On-air switches between cable-news hosts make for bright moments on Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, with the audiences at home and producers in studio looking at warm exchanges between personalities like Hannity and Ingraham or Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell. The chatter between former CNN hosts Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon generated so much attention that producers often let the segment bleed into Lemon’s first segment of the night and even time reserved for commercials. These days, Hannity has begun letting a new crowd bear witness.
Since January of this year, Hannity has been hosting some editions of his regular 9 p.m. program in front of a live, in-studio audience consisting of a few dozen people. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Fox News viewers can see the crowd as “Hannity” goes to commercial break,...

MSNBC’s Joy Reid took on two of Donald Trump’s most faithful scions Thursday in a segment for “The ReidOut,” saying threatening letters that Stephen Miller and J.D. Vance wrote to universities reflect an emboldened approach after the Supreme Court’s ruling that effectively struck down affirmative action in colleges.
Reid, in a conversation with activist and former president/director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, drew a line connecting the language of the Supreme Court’s majority decision and the talking points of the late conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.
Reid then pointed to what she called a direct outcome — letters that Miller, Trump’s former senior White House adviser, and Vance, the U.S. senator from Ohio who was endorsed by Trump, sent to law schools and top universities threatening them with repercussions if they attempted to subvert the ruling.

The U.S. Navy detected what sounded like an implosion off the North Atlantic coast around the time the OceanGate submersible lost communication with its mothership on Sunday, NBC reporter Tom Costello told Joy Reid on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” on Thursday. The report comes the same day the sub was confirmed to be destroyed by the U.S. Coast Guard, following a days-long search that captured worldwide media attention.
“On Sunday, the Navy detected what sounded, or was similar to, the sounds of an implosion or an explosion in the water about the time that that sub lost communication with the mothership,” Costello told Reid. “As you know, Joy, the Navy has microphones and sensors all across the North Atlantic, really to listen for Russian sub activity. It does appear that they may have picked up the implosion of the sub.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden reportedly reached bipartisan agreement on a new debt ceiling bill this week, but Republicans apparently aren’t too pleased with it – something the “Morning Joe” hosts called out as “hypocrisy squared” on Wednesday morning.
The new bill, which is set to face a vote on Wednesday, needs to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate before the June 5 deadline set by the Treasury Department, or the country risks default. On Tuesday though, the Freedom Caucus minced no words about their feelings on the bill, saying “we will do everything in our power to stop it and end it now.”
In discussing that opposition on Wednesday morning, host Joe Scarborough was just kind of flabbergasted, considering how Republicans handled the debt crisis while Trump was in office.

Joy Reid has accused Republican leaders of using the U.S. debt ceiling as negotiating collateral for budget talks in a dangerous game of cat and mouse that “could plunge our nation off an economic cliff.”
Reid, in the opening segment Thursday night of her MSNBC show “The ReidOut,” compared the means by which House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the GOP group are negotiating the debt ceiling to a husband and wife using their credit-card bill for leverage in a fight over holiday spending.
Reid went so far as to call it a “Republican lie.”
“With just seven days ’til the United States could default on our debt, talks between Republicans and White House officials have yet to resolve the issue,” she said, setting up her jab. “But today, President Biden made a very important point.”

As more and more lavish gifts to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas from billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow are being unearthed, Ari Melber, host of MSNBC’s “The Beat” and chief legal correspondent, took an opportunity to call out Thomas directly — and bluntly — on Thursday.
“Do you think you will get away with this forever?” the MSNBC host asked, looking down the camera.
In early April, Propublica reported that for more than 20 years, Thomas was treated to expensive luxury vacations by Texas billionaire Harlan Crow. The issue is, Thomas never once reported said gifts on his financial disclosures. Then, a few weeks later, it was revealed that, in 2014, Thomas made more than $130,000 when he sold several properties to Crow — an amount far in excess of their value. This included the house Thomas’ mother currently lives in.

Joy Reid is a longtime critic of fired Fox News star Tucker Carlson, so it’s no shock that on Wednesday, she took some time at the top of her MSNBC show to talk about the latest bombshell revelation about him: A leaked text in which Carlson used a racist phrase and admitted to fantasizing about violence against his political enemies.
Mockingly addressing Carlson directly, Reid said, “it turns out you really are as repulsively racist as the guy that you once played on TV.”
But, she reminded viewers, the reveal shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Carlson’s “odd, 19th century eugenics talk” was heavily featured on a program she called, “the show of record for white grievance.”

MSNBC’s Joy Reid went after America’s gun culture in her monologue for Monday’s “The ReidOut,” punctuating her hard-to-argue-with points with an image from this month’s NRA convention in Indianapolis, in which a young boy is seen pointing a pistol directly at a camera.
“Americans buy millions of guns a month and keep buying more, feeding a booming industry that can’t market their bloody trade in other parts of the world where they have actual gun laws, so they pump all their resources into fostering American’s sick obsession, promoting not just guns but the reckless permission to use them — legally — on fellow Americans, with barely a second thought,” Reid said.
She then went for the vugular, mocking gun-loving right-wing conspiracy theorists by wielding one of their favorite refrains.

As the Manhattan Da’s investigation into Donald Trump’s hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels has ramped up over the last several weeks, ultimately leading to his arrest and arraignment on Tuesday, the former president has maintained that the payments in question were made to protect his marriage to Melania Trump.
But MSNBC host Alex Wagner doens’t it, and she argued Tuesday that the Da’s investigation has effectively dismantled that claim.
“The news is not good for him, and might I also say, his defense, or the defense that has been floated, that Trump was making these payments not for his campaign but to shield his family and to shield Melania—that was taken apart today,” Wagner said, speaking on a live panel with fellow MSNBC figures Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid, among others.

Photographers called for her to look this way, that way, and “over the shoulder” as she posed with her collaborators, executive producer and director Roger Ross Williams and showrunner Shoshana Guy.

California Governor Gavin Newsom made headlines last night when he told MSNBC’s Joy Reid that he would appoint an African American woman to succeed Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca) should she resign her seat.
“We have multiple names in mind, and the answer is yes,” he told Reid.
But asked about his statement again on Tuesday on ABC’s The View, Newsom clarified that he has “no expectation” that Feinstein will do so.
“Are you implying that she should step down before her term is over, because some folks thought that meant that you were sort of pushing her out,” co-host Sunny Hostin asked him.
“Quite the contrary,” Newsom said. “She’s one of my oldest, closest friends and allies, and I say that literally and not figuratively.
Newsom called Feinstein an “incredible mentor to me,” and said that he had merely been asked the question of what would happen if she did retire.
