After years of resisting any shift into live sports, Netflix has finally punted and will now stream two NFL games on Christmas Day beginning this year.
It’s a major coup for Netflix, even if the games are on a Wednesday — so get ready for Tbd announcers to read a lot of “Wednesday” promos. Netflix will also get at least one game around the holidays for both 2025 and 2026. There’s no way around it now: Netflix has live sports.
Netflix would never put it this way, but the money the streamer is spending on these games is something it would’ve previously spent elsewhere, perhaps on say…a movie?
Spencer Wang, Netflix’s VP of finance, investor relations, and corporate development, said at the Moffett Nathanson conference this morning that Netflix is spending on the NFL package about what it costs the streamer to make a mid-budget movie. Wang added...

Being a professional quarterback is arguably the toughest job in football — maybe in any sport, period. Quarterback, the new eight-episode docuseries from NFL Films and Omaha Productions, follows three of the biggest quarterbacks in the game throughout the 2022 season, giving an unprecedented look at what it takes for the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota to succeed when all eyes are on them.
“Look — we’ve seen quarterbacks mic’d up for a game. We’ve certainly seen training camp. But we’ve never followed a quarterback throughout the entire season to see what he does Sunday night after a big win, after a brutal loss on a last-second field goal — what they do on Mondays and Tuesdays on their off days,” Hall of Fame quarterback and Quarterback executive producer Peyton Manning told Netflix. “Are they hanging out? The annual NFL Draft usually spawns weeks of rumors, speculation, and mock drafts that move players up and down. But all of that is just guesswork, and at this year’s first-round parsing of the college ranks in Detroit, the chalk held up for the first four picks.
USC’s quarterback Caleb Williams went No. 1 to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night, a move that has been expected for months. There was a bit of intrigue surrounding who might go 2-3 in the draft, but the Washington Commanders went with the safe pick in Lsu Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels at No. 2, and the New England Patriots followed with North Carolina’s Drake Maye at No. 3.
This was the fourth draft with quarterbacks going with the top three picks. It previously happened in 1971, 1999 and 2021.
Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. went to the Arizona Cardinals at No. 4, another expected pick.

Netflix is moving from quarterbacks to wide receivers and tight ends in its latest NFL docuseries.
The streamer has ordered Receiver from the team behind Quarterback – NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2Pm Productions.
The series follows stars such as Las Vegas Raider Davante Adams, Minnesota Viking Justin Jefferson, San Francisco 49ers George Kittle and Deebo Samuel and Detroit Lion Amon-ra St. Brown.
It comes after Netflix last year launched Quarterback starring Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, then of the Vikings, and Marcus Mariota, then of the Atlanta Falcons. Manning said Netflix had renewed Quarterback for a second season, but admitted that finding subjects was also tricky, hence the pivot to receivers.
The series follows this group throughout the 2023 season, which saw the 49ers beaten in the Super Bowl by the Chiefs.
The eight-part show will launch in the summer.

When the Minnesota Vikings call a play this week, quarterback Joshua Dobbs hopefully won’t need the coaches to use 20 seconds explaining what he is supposed to do. Coming off a remarkable victory, the Vikings and their four-game winning streak play host to the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans sits atop the standings in the NFC South and would like to stay there as the teams head into the second of the NFL season.
Odds & Analysis
The Saints’ offense ranks in the top half of the league, while its top-10 defense has come up big many times. Both will be tested against a Minnesota squad riding high. The Vikings have earned three of their last four wins by just one score or less and are still adjusting after the loss of starting quarterback Kirk Cousins.
To say that Joshua Dobbs had very little idea of what was happening last week would be an understatement.

When creators of the Netflix docuseries Quarterback selected three NFL playmakers to shadow for the 2022-23 season, they couldn’t possibly be certain that one, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, would go on to win the Super Bowl; another, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, would have the season of his life; and the third, the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota, would be benched, adding a poignant undertone to balance out the triumphalism.
Netflix’s bet on these three quarterbacks paid off handsomely, both narratively and commercially. With 3.3 million views and 21.4 million hours viewed, per the streamer, the series ranked third among original streaming shows (and fifth among all titles) for its opening week, according to Nielsen — showing Netflix can compete in the sports space even without live rights. The quarterbacks themselves also have expressed satisfaction with the end product.

Streamers have yet to figure out how to effectively tap into the massive sports audience. While some are bidding up the prices for the rights to live sports, like Apple for Mls and Amazon’s Prime Video for “Thursday Night Football,” to say nothing of the impending NBA rights negotiations, Netflix appears to be happy to focus on sports-adjacent content at the moment.
“We really think that we can have a really strong offering for sports fans on Netflix without having to be part of the difficulty of the economic model of live sports licensing,” Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said on the company’s most recent earnings call.
By avoiding a massive bet on rights to a single league that would tie it to the cycles of sports seasons, Netflix can bring a variety of sports content to its users all year. The streamer already has a track record of...

Newly released Netflix docuseries “Quarterback” takes viewers on an inside look at the lives of some of the league’s most-watched players’ off the gridiron. It’s the latest example of what co-ceo Ted Sarandos called “sports-adjacent” programming on Wednesday’s earnings call, and this one scored big.
Initial viewership of the series proved that football still reigns as an American favorite, and Netflix might not need to pay up for expensive broadcasting rights to profit from the national obsession. A total of 1.1 million households tuned into the premiere episode of the series in its first five days released, according to the latest Wrap Report for the week of July 10-16.

Peyton Manning and Netflix are searching for more quarterbacks to profile in a second season of their NFL docuseries.
Manning, who exec produces Quarterback, which starred Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota, revealed that the streamer had greenlit the series for a second season.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the Colts legends said, “Season 2 has been greenlit by Netflix, we’re excited, we’re hoping for more quarterbacks, it’s easier to say yes. I don’t want to hear ‘It’s going to be a distraction’ because that’s not true, Patrick Mahomes proved that, Kirk Cousins proved that, Marcus, the way he handled that, proved that. We’re hoping that guys after seeing it say this is going to be a cool thing that I can show to my kids when I’m older, show to my grandkids one day. Hopefully the pitch will be easier.

Netflix may have agreed to a licensing deal to import HBO originals recently, but its latest moves might have Warner Bros. Discovery crying foul and looking for a referee. The world’s largest streamer has announced it has secured the rights to a new docuseries following the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. The show will feature veteran champions like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe — who recently announced that 2023 would be her last World Cup — 18-year-old newcomer Alyssa Thompson, as well as U.S. Women’s World Cup Team first-timers Sofia Huerta, Lynn Williams, and Kristie Mewis.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were at the Tudum Theater on Wednesday for the premiere of Netflix’s new docuseries, Quarterback.
Quarterback is an eight-episode docuseries that follows quarterbacks Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota and show their lives outside the football field. Mahomes plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, Cousins for the Minnesota Vikings and Mariota for the Atlanta Falcons. Kelce also plays for the Kansas City Chiefs but is a tight end.
“Look – we’ve seen quarterbacks mic’d up for a game. We’ve certainly seen training camp. But we’ve never followed a quarterback throughout the entire season to see what he does Sunday night after a big win, after a brutal loss on a last-second field goal — what they do on Mondays and Tuesdays on their off days,” said NFL legend Peyton Manning, who is also the executive producer for the show, in a statement.

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes turned the 2023 Espy Awards into a glamorous date night. On Wednesday, July 12, the couple - who tied the knot in March 2022 and have two children together - attended the award ceremony in Los Angeles. The pair walked the carpet and posed happily together, Patrick in a sleek beige Hugo Boss suit accented with shimmering silver necklaces, and Brittany in an elegant Versace black dress with cutouts on the side.
Patrick credited Brittany for their stunning looks on the carpet. "I have a great stylist. Brittany Mahomes is my stylist. Brittany is the one who makes the final decision," he shared in an interview on the carpet.
The parents, who welcomed their second child in November 2022, have "enjoyed every second of" parenthood, according to Brittany, and opened up about how they're adjusting to being a family of four. "We've been traveling a lot and bringing our kids with us,...

Travis and Donna Kelce enjoyed a mother-son date night at the "Quarterback" premiere in Los Angeles. On July 11, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end hit the red carpet with his mom to celebrate the new Netflix docuseries, which stars Travis's teammate Patrick Mahomes and two other NFL quarterbacks. The duo dressed to impress for the evening, with Travis wearing a pastel mint suit and Donna wearing a beige lace set covered in sequins and carrying a red clutch, perhaps as a nod to the Chiefs's colors.
At the premiere, Travis shared his thoughts on Mahomes appearing in "Quarterback" alongside fellow NFL stars Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota. "I'm excited for him. When he told me he was doing it, I was pumped," the 33-year-old athlete said in an interview. "It can't happen to a better guy in a better moment, obviously taking us all the way and being the NFL...

As sports docuseries go, Netflix's Quarterback by no means reinvents the wheel. While the eight-part series boasts unprecedented access to NFL stars at the peak of their careers — including Super Bowl Lvii champion and Mvp Patrick Mahomes — it relies on a familiar format as it charts their respective journeys throughout the 2022 season. Episodes combine extensive game footage with commentary from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings Qb Kirk Cousins, and former Atlanta Falcon Marcus Mariota, who speak candidly about their successes, disappointments, and struggles. Swap in different sports and you get Netflix shows like Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing, or shift the timeline up to the preseason to replicate the league's long-running HBO series Hard Knocks.

Patrick Mahomes may have gone to Disneyland after his Super Bowl win but his next stop on his tour is Netflix.
The streamer is getting in to the NFL with its latest, and most high-profile, sports docuseries Quarterback.
The series will feature exclusive access to Kansas City Chiefs; Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins and Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota over the course of the 2022 season.
The fact that Mahomes won the Super Bowl, with a high ankle sprain, in a thrilling game against the Philadelphia Eagles, is a boon for the series, which comes from NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Mahomes’ 2Pm Productions.
The series, which will premiere in the summer, will follow the three QBs from the start of the season to the end, following them on and off the field, from inside the huddle with teammates to inside their homes with their families

Vaccination Status Denied As Factor In NFL Cuts, As Jacksonville Jaguars Walk Back Coach’s Statement
Update: The Jacksonville Jaguars have walked back a controversial statement by head coach Urban Meyer, who said that vaccine status was a “decision-maker” in the makeup of his team’s final roster.
Meyer cited the risks associated with unvaccinated players under the NFL’s Covid-19 protocols.
“Everyone was considered,” Meyer said on Tuesday via ESPN. “That was part of the [considerations such as] production, let’s start talking about this, and also is he vaccinated or not? Can I say that that was a decision-maker? It was certainly in consideration.”
The NFL Players Association said it has launched an investigation into Meyer after the remarks.
The Jaguars team issued a statement Wednesday that it claimed “clarified” the Meyer remarks, saying no player was cut based on his status.
“Availability is one of the many factors taken into consideration when making roster decisions. We have vaccinated and unvaccinated players on our roster, and no...
