Director Reinaldo Marcus Green and first time feature writer Zach Baylin offer a twist on more traditional biopics by viewing the story of Venus and Serena Williams through the prism of their family. To the fore is Will Smith as the family's patriarch, who was a man with the ultimate plan - that his girls would go down in tennis history. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Jeffrey Wright with the Montecito Award at a Feb. 15 event. At the event, Wright will discuss his career leading up to this year’s performance in “American Fiction,” for which he has received lead actor nominations for the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
“I’ve been a fan of Mr. Wright since I first saw him in 1993 in the original Broadway production of “Angels in America.” I’ve since admired that he brings a high level of class and integrity to every role he does. Yet, no film had capitalized on his extraordinary range and virtuosity until “American Fiction.” It is about time,” Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
Wright has received Tony, Emmy, AFI and Golden Globe awards and has appeared in “Rustin,” “No Time to Die,” “Westworld,” “Asteroid City” and “The Batman.”

Ava DuVernay’s latest drama “Origin” has added an original song to its Oscar prospects.
New Zealand Māori artist Stan Walker performed the new song, “I Am,” at a private film screening at the Edition Hotel in West Hollywood on Wednesday. He also co-wrote the track with Michael Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu Anasta. The song enters a competitive race of Oscar hopefuls from movies such as “Barbie” and “Trolls Band Together.”
Walker would make history as the second Indigenous person, and the first Indigenous man, nominated for original song. Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person ever to win an Academy Award in 1982 for the song “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Aside from Sainte-Marie, the only Indigenous Oscar winner in 95 years is Taika Waititi, who took home the adapted screenplay prize for “Jojo Rabbit” (2019).

Long before he won the 2022 Best Actor Oscar for playing tennis prodigy producer Richard Williams in “King Richard,” Will Smith was first recognized in the category for his portrayal of iconic boxer Muhammad Ali in “Ali.” His performance in the 2001 film, which amounts to one hour, 57 minutes, and 22 seconds of screen time, currently stands as the 12th longest ever nominated for any acting Oscar. He also holds the 47th spot on the list thanks to his work in 2006’s “The Pursuit of Happyness.” The performance that finally won him the award is significantly shorter than these two, yet still long by Oscars standards, as it just crosses the 90 minute mark.
Smith’s one-hour, 30-minute, and 10-second-long lead turn in “King Richard” is the 18th longest to have ever merited a Best Actor win. It also constitutes the lengthiest performance in the film by nearly half an hour, with Saniyya Sidney...

Angela Bassett will be honored with the Montecito Award at the 38th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. She will receive the award on Thursday, Feb. 9 during an in-person conversation about her career leading up to her performance in director Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
“Ms. Bassett has had an illustrious career as an actor, director and producer and in ‘Wakanda Forever’ reminds us why she’s so greatly revered. She’s regal, fierce and commanding as Queen Ramonda. We bow down,” said Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
The 64-year-old actor has steadily received awards season buzz for her performance in the emotional “Black Panther” sequel, leaving many to predict that she has a strong chance at becoming the first performer in a Marvel Studios film to be nominated in an acting category — specifically best supporting actress — at the upcoming Academy Awards. Venus Williams, one of the all-time tennis greats, gave a powerful speech about celebrating individuality at Variety‘s Power of Women Event in New York.
“My mom is the strongest person I know,” said Williams, whose remarks were pre-taped, in her speech on Thursday. “And alongside my father, she encouraged us to celebrate our individuality and gave us our beliefs and values. She never let us succumb to someone else’s opinion to keep us from what we believe what’s doing right. Serena Williams isn’t opposed to a King Richard sequel.
In an interview with Insider, the tennis star mentioned how she’s interested in the story of her and her sister expanded upon in theaters. There’s definitely more to the story as Serena has her own journey to success that of course isn’t the same as from her sister’s.
“King Richard had a perfect ending with Venus on the tennis court. Venus goes in her direction, and I go in my direction,” Serena explained. “It’s two completely different stories.” However, reliving those moments of her life could prove difficult for Williams to watch.

The Williams family’s story obviously doesn’t just stop at “King Richard.” The Warner Bros. Oscar-winning film captures Venus and Serena Williams’ rise to tennis stardom, and Serena Williams already has an idea for a trilogy.
“‘King Richard’ had a perfect ending with Venus on the tennis court,” producer Williams told Insider in a cover story, but there is definitely room for a Williams family cinematic universe, with both sisters having their stories told in spin-off films.
“Venus goes in her direction and I go in my direction,” Williams said. “It’s two completely different stories.”
She continued, “I had a rough journey. I didn’t do well and then I did. It’s a lot of drama. It’s a telenovela. I don’t think I recognize my accomplishments enough. I’m one of those people that’s like, ‘If it’s done, it’s done, I’ve moved on.

Severance finale event
Stars Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, Yul Vazquez, Jen Tullock and Michael Chernus, director Ben Stiller and creator Dan Erickson celebrated the finale of their Apple TV+ series on April 8 at Los Angeles’ DGA Theater. The success of legendary tennis athletes Venus and Serena Williams is extraordinary, and the story of the man who kickstarted their journey is an incredible testament to their dedication and passion for the sport. As viewers were still processing an incident in which Will Smith walked onstage at the Oscars and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith, the King Richard star was announced as the night’s Best Actor winner.
An emotional Smith took the stage, tears in his eyes, and apologized to the Academy and many others, but not to Rock. Smith drew parallels between the moment he was having and the life of the man he played onscreen — Richard Williams, father to Serena and Venus.
“I’m not crying for winning an award, it’s not about winning an award for me,” said Smith. “It’s about being able to shine light on all of the people. Art imitates life, I look like the crazy father just like they said about Mr. Williams. Love makes you do crazy things.”

The red carpet has commenced on Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. The 94th Academy Awards kick off Sunday evening at the Dolby Theatre and nominees are dazzling before the show. Among those nominated, Variety highlighted Ariana DeBose, Kristen Stewart and Jessica Chastain as some of the year’s best dressed. Previous appearances this season included “West Side Story” star DeBose in a daring Giorgio Armani suit during the film’s L.A. premiere and Stewart’s silky ensemble at the Venice premiere of her intense turn as Princess Diana in “Spencer.”
Even as the Oscars celebrate cinema, the ceremony is no stranger to bold political statements. From stars donning the colors of the Ukrainian flag to vocal condemnation of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, the year has been rife with protests both on and off the carpet.

Anthony Mackie, the star of “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and the next Captain America, is planning to open his own film production studio in his home town of New Orleans.
News of the facility on a 20-acre lot in East New Orleans was first reported over the weekend by local outlets in New Orleans and confirmed by the city’s mayor Latoya Cantrell, as well as official land records in the city.
“This is incredible,” Cantrell wrote. “The influx of productions will not only bring economic growth but job opportunities!”
A representative for Mackie did not immediately respond to a request for comment to provide any additional details about the film studio.
Mackie will next be seen in Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series based on the video game franchise, and he’s also making his directorial debut on a film called “Spark” about civil rights icon Claudette Colvin, which...

The 2022 Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 19 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors around, thanks in large part to the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a Best Picture victor. Since 2009, PGA has forecast 9 of 12 Oscar champs.
This year, the guild overlapped with the academy on eight titles: “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.” The PGA lineup was rounded out by “Being the Ricardos” and “tick, tick…Boom!,” which were swapped out for “Drive My Car” and “Nightmare Alley” at the Oscars.
For Best Animated Feature, the guild and the academy aligned four-for-five, with Oscar contenders “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs the Machines” and “Raya and the Last Dragon...

For many working in the film industry, winning an Oscar marks the pinnacle of a Hollywood career, the end goal, the most major of major achievements. And while this year’s Academy Awards brings back many stalwart nominee regulars, the most exciting thing about the 2022 pool is the number of rising stars and emerging talents.
As the Oscars 2022 telecast strives to bring in a wider audience, its brightest new stars — some celebrating their first nominations, others enjoying renewed attention or simply a part of the year’s best films — make it clear that the future of Hollywood is shaping up to be fresh and new indeed.
As we inch ever-closer to the big night on March 27, let’s celebrate its breakouts right now.

In some years, the most action-packed, stunt-filled films are also ambitious enough to find their way into Oscar’s best picture category. But for every “1917” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” there are 10 “Fast and Furious” and “Taken” films — where the action is center piece.
Yet movies driven more by character and story than by fisticuffs and explosions still feature stunts, and they often come at crucial moments. While they may not require a Bond escape or a Bourne fight, they need to be dynamic and exciting while serving the context of the larger story.
This year’s best picture nominees included “Belfast” (riots and explosions), “Nightmare Alley” (brutal beatdowns and a vicious hit and run), “Power of the Dog” (men on horseback), “West Side Story”, “King Richard” and “Dune,” which with its futuristic sword play and scenes of war, is the one film on a blockbuster budget.

Oscar winner Halle Berry made a special appearance at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards to accept the SeeHer award, a prize that recognizes a woman who pushes boundaries and defies stereotypes. Berry’s career — which spans more than 30 years as an actor, producer and now director — easily fits that bill.
Berry was presented the honor by “Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae, who Berry thanked for her inspiring work. “You have rearranged the way we see ourselves as women of color on television and in the world,” she said at the beginning of her rousing acceptance speech.
As she reflected on her time in entertainment, Berry spoke about her road to star in and direct “Bruised,” a film about a Black woman Mma fighter. “The Power of the Dog” won Best Picture at the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards, which aired on The CW Sunday night. The awards have become an increasingly important barometer for Oscar contention, especially since the Golden Globes have fallen under increased scrutiny (with NBC electing not to even air the Globes in 2022).
Chosen by the Critics Choice Association, which was formed from the merged Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association in 2019 and consists of 525 critics and entertainment journalists, the awards align a bit more with established critical opinion. That differentiates it a bit from the many guild awards this time of the year, as well as the Oscars, which are awards selected by industry members.

Last Updated March 7: Underdog “King Richard” beat the higher profile “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” for drama film editing honors at the 72nd Ace Eddie Awards on March 5 at the Ace Hotel. Likewise, “Tick Tick Boom” upset the favored “Don’t Look Up” in the film comedy category. In terms of the Oscar race, though, it’s still wide open for “Dune,” “The Power of the Dog,” or “Don’t Look Up” to prevail.
Last Updated February 10: The editing Oscar nominees — “Don’t Look Up” (Netflix), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “King Richard” (Warner Bros.), “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), and “Tick Tick Boom” (Netflix) — all employ different rhythmic styles to convey their bizarre worlds and to get inside the heads of their troubled protagonists. For those wondering about editing as a Best Picture predictor, particularly since “Belfast” is not included here, they’ve only overlapped twice since 2012 with “Argo” and “Nomadland.

Warner Bros. sports drama King Richard took the top Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor Saturday to cap the American Cinema Editors’ 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards.
Pamela Martin edited the pic, which sees Will Smith portraying the father to tennis sensations Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena Williams (Demi Singleton), who had a plan that would take the young tennis players from the streets of Compton to the global stage. The win puts Martin and the film in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, where it is competing against fellow nominees Don’t Look Up, Dune, The Power of the Dog and Tick, Tick…Boom!. Twenty-two of the past 30 Ace winners for best edited dramatic film and 11 of the past 16 have gone on to score the Oscar, but Ford v. Ferrari won the Academy Award last year after Paradise took the Eddie.

Sherri Shepherd wasn’t a nominee at the 13th Aafca Awards on Wednesday night, but she certainly had the look of a winner.
Shepherd was on hand at the annual awards show — which celebrates the best in film each year — to present the best actress award to her “Chi-town sister” Jennifer Hudson, who the organization’s near-100 members honored for playing Aretha Franklin in “Respect.”
“I’m so in awe of her, that she has reinvented herself but she’s still singing those soulful gospel songs, then she’s pop, then she can get in there and act her butt off and did an amazing job in ‘Respect,’” Shepherd told Variety about Hudson on the red carpet outside the Sls Hotel in Beverly Hills. “Now the girl’s got her own talk show — welcome to the block, sis! — so, it’s very, very exciting to support her in this manner.

Aunjanue Ellis was content being a journeywoman actor in the business and providing for her family — but now the acclaim is pouring in.
And yes, that includes an Oscar nomination for her role as Oracene ‘Brandy’ Williams in Reinaldo Marcus Green’s “King Richard.” On the latest episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we talk to Ellis about what it feels like to now be an Academy Award nominated actress, which she still can’t say out loud. She discusses her experience with working with double Oscar-nominee Will Smith (for best picture and actor) and the difference between his “lore” and the “good person” she was privileged to work with, in addition to her cast members. Listen below:
Ellis tells the podcast that didn’t turn her phone on until around 11 p.m. on the day of the Oscar nominations, and was flooded with multiple messages. However, it...

Don’t let the title fool you: While Reinaldo Marcus Green’s crowd-pleasing biopic Best Picture contender “King Richard” gets its name from the tongue-in-cheek nickname of the father of the iconic Williams sisters, it’s Aunjanue Ellis’ Oscar-nominated turn as their mother Oracene Price that feels like the real revelation. Green’s film, produced by both Venus and Serena Williams (along with their sister Isha Price), tracks the rise of the tennis champs through the teachings of their mercurial, driven father. And while Will Smith turns in one of the best performances of his career as the eponymous Richard Williams, Ellis matches him at every turn.
For Ellis, bringing the full truth of Oracene Price — that’s “Ms. Oracene” to her — wasn’t just essential to the role; it became nothing less than a mission for the actress. But first, she had to counter her own misconceptions.
Ellis admits...
