A Vatican official is condemning Brittany Maynard, the terminally ill woman who ended her own life Saturday. Speaking to the Italian news agency Ansa on Tuesday, Monsignor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula called Maynard's assisted suicide "an absurdity." "This woman [took her own life] thinking she would die with dignity, but this is the error," the president of the Pontifical Academy for Life said, according to a translation by Reuters. "Suicide is not a good thing. It is a bad thing because it is saying no to life and to everything it means with respect to our mission in the world and toward those around us.

Brittany Maynard is firing back at Dr. Ira Byock, a top palliative care physician and vocal opponent of right-to-die laws, for making public comments about her that she says are untrue. "As a terminally ill patient, I find it disrespectful and disturbing when people discuss my personal health with details that are not accurate to push an agenda," she wrote in a comment on the website for the Diane Rehm radio show, where Byock was scheduled to speak Thursday. "I am Brittany Maynard and it concerns me that Dr. Ira Byock will speak on my 'behalf' at all again," she wrote.
