Licensed video games are a risky business. More often than not, the interactive experience is a pale imitation of the source material, but there are exceptions. I’m looking at you, Marvel’s Spider-Man. Still, many film characters and franchises could translate well to the video game space, and Lionsgate is thinking about giving John Wick a chance at the big time. According to a report from IndieWire, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer says the studio is “fielding proposals” for a John Wick video game.
While Feltheimer is a big fan of the idea, he’s reluctant to say too much at the risk of getting fans overly excited about something that may not happen. “I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big Aaa game to be made out of ‘John Wick.’ We have been fielding proposals. We certainly are interested in moving that forward,...

Lionsgate is flirting with the potential of a major video game based on the “John Wick” action franchise, the studio’s CEO let slip on Thursday.
During an earnings call with investors, Jon Feltheimer noted that Lionsgate execs have been “fielding proposals” for a big video game based on the Keanu Reeves movies. Despite his excitement at the idea, Feltheimer was hesitant to say much more about the early-stages project: “I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big Aaa game to be made out of ‘John Wick.’ We have been fielding proposals. We certainly are interested in moving that forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about that at this time.”

The third movie in the action-packed John Wick franchise is set to hit theaters in just a couple of days, and the fever pitch has hit an all-time high. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the third entry in the series, with many thinking the eponymous assassin will hang up his pistols soon. However, that might not be the case. Lead actor Keanu Reeves has expressed his interest in returning for more movies, and recently, director Chad Stahelski hinted at a fourth film, which might already be in the works.
As reported by ComicBook.com, Stahelski took to Reddit earlier this week as part of a scheduled Ama (Ask Me Anything). Over the course of a couple of hours, he answered plenty of questions posted by fans, and also shed some light on the future of the series. In a few responses, Chad suggested that box office performance and audience demand would play a part,...

Just ahead of John Wick 3: Parabellum's release on May 17, Good Shepherd has announced John Wick Hex, a strategy game helmed by game designer Mike Bithell. The game is being described as “fight-choreographed chess”, meaning that characters will have to think two or three steps ahead as they make their way through a plethora or trained assassins just waiting to just into the frey. Here’s a more in-depth description of the game, courtesy…...

Everyone grab your favorite semi-automatic weapon and hide your dogs, because there’s more John Wick stuff on the way! In addition to the third installment of the film series coming out next week – which our very own Matt Donato reviewed already – everyone’s favorite beleaguered assassin will be coming to home consoles and the Epic Games store on PC at some point in the future with John Wick Hex. The game comes from the mind of Mike Bithell, creator of Thomas Was Alone, a very successful indie puzzle title from 2012.
The upcoming action-strategy title is said to focus on the “gun fu” aspects of the film series, which means the player is going to be thrust into close-quarters firearm or melee combat. From the debut trailer, it looks as though it’s going to play in more of an X-com kind of vein, with action points, planned movements, accuracy,...

John Wick Hex turns the incredible action of the films into a clever strategy experience.
Lionsgate and Good Shepherd Entertainment are working on a fascinating new game based on the John Wick film franchise.
Called John Wick Hex, this upcoming game is surprisingly not another third or first-person shooter featuring characters and locations from the franchise. Developed by Mike Bithell (perhaps best known for the indie game Thomas Was Alone), John Wick Hex is described as "fight-choreographed chess." In it, you'll control John Wick and guide him through various puzzle-like levels that require him to take out his enemies as efficiently as possible.
It's not entirely clear how this is going to work, but the glimpses of the gameplay that we see in the trailer suggest that this game is going to play similarly to an isometric strategy title. However, there also seems to be a kind...

Metal Gear-inspired stealth-based game Volume comes to PlayStation Vita today, and it even supports cross-buy, so there’s no need to buy it again if you’ve already been enjoying it on PlayStation 4.
As part of the confirmed release today, the game’s creator – Mike Bithell – expressed his excitement over bringing it to whole new audience. In addition, every last drop of content of the original game has made the transfer to Sony’s handheld console.
Everything from the PS4 version of Volume is now portable sized. That’s all 100 levels of the stealth action campaign, along with all curated Staff Picks and uploaded levels from the community. The game’s level editor is also packed in there with the ability to design, upload, and play your own or someone else’s levels on the go.

As much as I love indie games, it’s been getting harder and harder to keep the flame alive. For a while there, most indies getting released were a variation of two formulas: obtuse puzzlers or dark narratives featuring young/naive protagonists. The glut of obnoxious puzzlers left me wanting something different, which I eventually found in Thomas Was Alone, the debut title from Mike Bithell. Sure, it was a quirky platformer, but it told a fascinating story and featured gorgeous narration from Danny Wallace. Enter Volume, a quirky stealth title from Bithell that tells a vaguely interesting story and once again sports beautiful narration from Wallace.
Marking only his second foray into the gaming world, Bithell has shown that he clearly understands how to make a fun and appealing title. Volume is a step forward in many ways for the developer, working to avoid the pratfalls that pull most artsy-fartsy indie titles down,...

Taking to the game’s official blog, Bithell penned an open letter to Vita owners anticipating the release of his sophomore title on Sony’s handheld, and hinted that the final technical hurdles facing the creative team should be overcome in a couple of weeks. Per Bithell:
“It’s so very nearly ready, but it needs a little more love,” the developer said on Volume’s official site. “A few personal problems and issues have slowed down our submittal, so even though the game is ‘done’ on Vita, we still...

Sony's Vita may not have been the storming success it had hoped, but it's full of games waiting to be discovered, as Jake explains...
Sony's PlayStation Vita recently turned three years old in the west. Despite being comparable in strength to a PlayStation 3, it still lives in the shadow of Nintendo's 3Ds and numerous smart devices.
The initial high price of the hardware and memory storage, coupled with a lack of Aaa exclusives at its launch, put a dent in its sales which the Vita never really recovered from. Touted as a full console experience at the start, the Vita has since morphed into something a little more unusual and more interesting.
Although Sony have said there's little chance of any new major releases, there's a bit more to this system than a yearly Assassin's Creed title. Here, we take a look at the most compelling reasons to purchase a Vita!

From Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell comes the neon-drenched sneak-em-up, Volume. Here's a new trailer...
With little more than a handful of brightly-coloured rectangles - and a charming narration by Danny Wallace - Thomas Was Alone emerged as one of the most captivating and absorbing puzzle games of recent years. First appearing as a Flash game way back in 2010, it was overhauled in 2012 and subsequently became an indie hit. If you haven't played Thomas Was Alone yet for some reason, we'd urge you to give it a try.
The developer behind Thomas Was Alone, Mike Bithell, is tackling something rather different for his next game. It's like a cross between Metal Gear Solid and Tron, in that it's a stealth game set in a distinctive-looking virtual world of geometric shapes and intense colours.
A reworking of the Robin Hood legend, Volume sees you sneak into secure areas to steal information.

Thomas Was Alone developer Mike Bithell has revealed a new trailer for his upcoming stealth-based title Volume, which features Andy Serkis for the very first time as the villainous Guy Gisborne.
Described as the overarching antagonist — a malevolent CEO who just so happens to control England — the voice and motion capture specialist can be heard at the tail end of the video. As for the rest of the footage, Bithell places a big emphasis on the game’s main enemy types, namely the Pawn, the Turret, the Knight, the Rogue, the Hound and the Archer. If you haven’t already guessed, Volume is shaping up to be a modern retelling of the Robin Hood legend. In this instance, Rob Locksley is played by YouTuber Charlie McDonnell with the primary goal set as “Steal. Create. Be heard.”

According to new ratings published by Usk, the German software regulatory board, block-based platformer Thomas Was Alone appears to be making the jump to the Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U. The charmingly minimalist title was first released on the PC back in 2012, with a PlayStation 3 version following in 2013.
Developed solely by Mike Bithell, Thomas Was Alone looks rather simplistic at first glance. It stars several different characters, but each one is only represented by a colored shape. For example, the titular Thomas is a red rectangle. Each shape also has their own unique ability, such as being able to float or being able to jump higher than the others. This group of rogue artificial-intelligence entities must work together in order to escape their predicament.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, these published ratings are usually a good sign that something is in development. In addition to the Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U,...

Dear video game industry,
I have to tell you something. I know this may sound like a breakup letter, but it is not. You still make me laugh. You still make me cry. You still make me full of anger, rage and happiness. You still make good sandwiches and tell me that my ass looks good in those jeans. This is a letter of frustration; a letter of loving hatred. Oxymoronic I know, but I feel the need to point out your failings – as well as your more favourable bits – so our future together can be as fruitful as possible.

Mike Bithell, the mind behind indie hit "Thomas Was Alone," has just announced his new project, a no-kill heist game called "Volume."
Bithell and his squad of indie artists and musicians are keeping quiet about "Volume"'s story details -- the plan is to reveal more at the GameCity festival later in October -- but we know that it focuses on a non-violent thief hoping to ratchet up his fame and fortune by plundering loot out from under its owners' noses.
From what I understand, "Volume" is more about creating diversions than it is Solid Snake-style silent takedowns and tranquilizer darts. Our slippery protagonist throws his voice around corners and down hallways to distract and divert the security bots that patrol the game's top-down levels. As he becomes more famous, "Volume"'s hero will eventually add new sounds to his armory. Bugles presumably have different effects than peals of thunder,...

Mike Bithell, the indie developer behind last year’s Thomas Was Alone, has unveiled his next low-budget project, Volume. Billed as a top-down stealth game, Bithell’s new title has you controlling an anonymous thief who stalks the virtual environment while avoiding enemy detection. In tandem with today’s announcement, the artist also debuted a trailer for the game, which you can check out below.
Even from the above footage, it’s easy to see how the game’s aesthetic is reminiscent of Bithell’s previous effort what with its minimalistic design. It’s a stylistic choice that also serves the gameplay, considering that Volume will challenge you to manoeuvre about the futuristic environment unseen. What’s more, David Housden – who provided the excellent music for Thomas Was Alone – will partner with the British developer once again for his new project.

There's something to be said for simplicity. Not to start off on a rant, but a lot of "Aaa" games today have a whole lot going on with them. Video games continually push the limits of what players can do in games, from multiple levels of character customizations, to intricately designed levels that force players to use every part of their brain, even going so far as to create entire worlds to explore: games today have a lot going on with them. Again, there is something to be said for simplicity. "Thomas Was Alone" is simple, still manages to be compelling, and is even beautiful at times.
At first glance, there's not really much to "Thomas Was Alone," just some squares that feel the need to get "up and to the right." And really, that's most of the game. You play as Thomas, a red rectangle, who finds "himself" trapped in an odd situation,...

Want to know what games the Independent Games Festival picked as their nominees in their top categories this year?
Hit the jump to see what categories "Hundreds," "Hotline Miami," and more got nominated for.
I haven't been able to pick out a particular pattern among this year's Igf nominees in terms of genre or game type--it's a pretty open and diverse field. Here's the final list of nominees:
Excellence In Visual Art
Incredipede (Northway Games and Thomas Shahan)
Kentucky Route Zero (Cardboard Computer)
Guacalamelee! (Drinkbox Studios)
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Asteroid Base)
Year Walk (Simogo)
Honorable mentions: Fly'n (Ankama Play); Eleven (Christoffer Hedborg, Datahowler); The Bridge (Ty Taylor and Mario Castaneda); Thomas Was Alone (Mike Bithell,...
