Where to Watch ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Okay’: Hulu (The series originally aired on Freeform.)
The pilot for “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” is still a marvel. What it accomplishes in such a short time — setting up a new family dynamic between Nicholas (Josh Thomas) and his two younger half-sisters (Kayla Cromer and Maeve Press) after their father dies unexpectedly — is paired so expertly with a perfect balance in tone. It’s more than your standard “there’s comedy in every tragedy” premise, where characters laugh through their grief. Watching that first episode, you can’t help but feel that something special is starting.
For two seasons, the intertwined lives of Nicholas, Matilda, and Genevieve powered their own emotional universe. Along with Nicholas’ eventual boyfriend Alex (Adam Faison), they formed the basis for the kind of show that could have easily stayed inside its cozy,...

Heading into Season 2 of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, creator, executive producer and star Josh Thomas was trying to figure out the best way to address the Covid-19 pandemic in the context of a Freeform comedy.
“We were trying to work out whether people would want to go back to being in the pandemic, by the time the show went to air in April,” Thomas said during the series’ panel at Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television awards-season event. “We were like, ‘Once everybody’s out there living their lives, are they really going to want to revisit this time?’ It’s just so crazy to look back on, isn’t it?”
Also starring Kayla Cromer, Maeve Press and Adam Faison, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay centers on Nicholas, an Australian who agrees to look after his two Los-Angeles-based half-sisters following their father’s untimely death.

2020 was a year when many turned to television to distract and soothe.
And, against all odds, television — most of it made in the pre-covid-19 era, only to debut in a landscape where the world had irreparably changed — delivered an opportunity to escape and relate. Long derided as the pedestrian sibling of the entertainment landscape, it was the medium’s very quality of immediate accessibility that allowed it to shine at a time when nothing was certain and nothing made sense.
Below, in alphabetical order, are the shows — not limited series, chill out chess freaks who are already scrolling for “The Queen’s Gambit” — that debuted in this brave new world. Below you’ll find stories that inspired, engaged — and don’t dismiss the importance of this last one — entertained. It’s not just Peak TV, It’s Peak Cataclysm TV.

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay follows Nicholas (Josh Thomas), who becomes the caretaker of his half-siblings after his father’s untimely death. Freeform’s freshman comedy follows Nicholas’ journey as he attempts to be a parent, balance a relationship, navigate grief and raise two teenage sisters one of which is on the spectrum.
Thomas, who not only stars in the show but is also the creator, leans into the characters rather than the story.

One of the hallmarks of Josh Thomas’ particularly spiky and sympathetic sense of humor is how he takes a situation we’ve seen unfold on TV before and makes the bold choice to let his characters react like actual human beings. On his semi-autobiographical comedy “Please Like Me,” people struggled through depression and their gnarled feelings with such candor that it felt both jarring and revelatory. The same holds true for his new Freeform comedy “Everything’s Going to Be Okay,” which follows a trio of siblings — played by Thomas, Maeve Press and Kayla Cromer — learning how to care for each other after their father (Christopher May) dies. They’re angry and sad in their grief, of course, but they’re also still themselves: messy and funny, wry and earnest. When, after their father’s funeral, they feel a need to express themselves with a wildly silly dance session in their kitchen,...

One of the things that comes across in “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” is that there’s an abundance of acceptance. Not just in regards to who people are, but in how best to move forward from the unexpected. Created by and starring Josh Thomas, this portrait of a shifting family becomes all the more stronger by engaging with things how they are, by finding moments of brightness in overwhelming circumstances.
Thomas stars as Nicholas, a young Australian man living in America. When an unexpected cancer diagnosis leads to his father’s sudden passing, Nicholas is left as the legal guardian to his two younger stepsisters, Matilda (Kayla Cromer) and Genevieve (Maeve Press). The series’ hourlong pilot joins a family already very much in progress, right at a critical point of potential change. But rather than simply highlight the way that Nicholas, Matilda, and Genevieve are forced to adapt after the...

Deaths, divorces, moves, adoptions, abandoned futures — sitcoms, for all their reputation for frivolity and escapism, tend to spring from trauma and upheaval. But few, with the exception of more recent prestige dramedies, lend the inciting turmoil the gravity and sensitivity it deserves.
Freeform's Everything's Gonna Be Okay looks in many ways like a typical family sitcom, with a 20-something outsider (creator-star Josh Thomas) taking on the parenting responsibilities for his teenage half-sisters (Kayla Cromer and Maeve Press) after their dad (Christopher May) dies of cancer. The girls are hyper-articulate, their dog impossibly adorable and their house the kind ...

Nicholas is not someone who should be charged with caring for the well-being of children. Possibly not even a small, nigh-indestructible pet. Even the people who like Nicholas can tell within seconds of meeting him that this twentysomething is an inveterate narcissist with little to no awareness of the needs, feelings, or even existence of others. Flirting at a bar with cute guy Alex, Nicholas insists they have a connection. “I’ve barely spoken,” Alex replies. “I think any feelings you think you have for me are actually feelings you have for your own anecdotes.

Stan has snapped up Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, Josh Thomas’ 10-part Us comedy commissioned by Disney’s young-adult Us cable network Freeform.
Created and written by Thomas and executive produced by Guesswork Television’s Kevin Whyte, the series will premiere on January 17, the same day as the Us.
Produced by Avalon Television and Freeform, the show plays on Thomas’ familiar tropes of well-intentioned but ill-equipped characters trying to find happiness in the midst of difficult times.
Thomas stars as Nicholas, a neurotic 20-something Australian who is visiting his dad and teenage half-sisters in Los Angeles.
When Nicholas’ trip is extended due to his father’s untimely death, the siblings are left to cope with the devastating loss and realisation that Nicholas is the one who will have to rise to the occasion, move in and hold it all together.
