Robin Wright will wear multiple hats on her next series, a Prime Video drama titled The Girlfriend.
Wright will star in, direct and serve as an executive producer of the series, which is based on a novel by Michelle Frances. Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon), Laurie Davidson (Mary and George) and Waleed Zuaiter (Gangs of London) also star in the series from Amazon MGM Studios and Imaginarium Productions.
Wright will play Laura, a woman with a great career, a loving husband (Zuaiter’s Howard) and a close relationship with her son, Daniel (Davidson). Things take a turn when Daniel brings home his new girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke). “After an uncomfortable first meeting,” the show’s description reads, “Laura grows convinced that Cherry isn’t who she says she is. While no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to stand by and watch Daniel be deceived. She’ll do anything to protect him.

Or is Laura paranoid and possessive?...

Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson shows a new side of dad Phil Robertson in The Blind, streaming exclusively on Great American Pure Flix. For Willie, telling his father’s incredible life story and the love he shares with his longtime wife Kay Robertson was “important” for Duck Dynasty fans to see onscreen. “[Duck Dynasty] is really the result of something,” Willie tells TV Insider. “It’s a result of their marriage, staying together, and our family staying together. We really felt like it’s an unbelievable story. It’s a story of redemption and faith. And now after 50 years, you’ve seen what has come out of that, especially with the TV show.” Willie executive produced the film alongside wife Korie Robertson through their production company Tread Lively. They went straight to the source to make sure they portrayed Phil and Kay’s relationship honesty. “It’s hard to go back and relive all that,...

Fathom Events, the company best known for bringing theater, opera, live events and concerts to screens, is currently on track for gross revenues of over $93 million. Despite the fact that the exhibition space has yet to fully recover from the Covid pandemic, Fathom is enjoying the best year in its history — it will surpass sales from 2019, previously the highest-grossing year in company history, by 116%. For further context, Fathom reported revenues of $68 million in 2022.
So what’s behind the surge? Fathom is chalking up the strong results to a pivot in business strategy for the company, one that saw it introduce a “specialty distribution” model. The goal was to bring a wider array of content to cinemas beyond the productions of the Metropolitan Opera that helped put Fathom on the map. It’s one that saw Fathom distribute faith-based films like “The Blind,” as well as release episodes of “The Chosen,...

The Blind is now the most successful release in the history of Fathom Events, as the faith-based feature has grossed $15.7 million at the North American box office as of Monday.
The film is Fathom’s first to see a longer theatrical run than its traditional event cinema releases. Originally slated for an eight-day run as part of Fathom’s new specialty distribution model, it was extended twice, Fathom said, and held a steady position in the top 10 for the duration of its more than three weeks in cinemas.
The Blind was produced by Tread Lively and Gnd Media Group. Andrew Hyatt directs the back-story of the star of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson. In 1960s Louisiana, Robertson falls in love and starts a family, but his demons soon threaten to tear everyone apart. As he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, he ultimately finds redemption in an unlikely place.

The Exorcist: Believer saw a first weekend take of $27.2 million, coming in under even the most modest of projections, including our own low end $30 million prediction, yet still having the best opening of the franchise. That number represents a near $10 million improvement over the last theatrically released Exorcist film: 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning ($18 million). That’s the good news, the bad news is that even with a franchise best opening and a reported budget of just $30 million before advertising, this opening is still a fairly sizable disappointment for the studio.
This film has gotten some absolutely horrendous reviews, including a 4/10 from our own Chris Bumbray who called it “awful.” Those reviews mixed with its horrible 54% audience score means this one will likely sink in the coming weeks. That is not what Universal needs from this film as they reportedly shelled out $400 million to retain the rights to the Exorcist...

“The Exorcist: Believer,” a reboot in the legacy horror franchise, opened atop box office charts despite falling short of expectations.
The film, from Universal and Blumhouse, collected $27.2 million from 3,663 North American venues over the weekend, below estimates that suggested a debut closer to $35 million. “Believer” also opened at the international box office with $17.8 million for a global start of $45.1 million. The “Exorcist” sequel cost $30 million, so it’s well-positioned in its theatrical run.
But reviews (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores (“C” CinemaScore) were terrible, so the studio may need to reconsider its strategy before the next installment opens in 2025. Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights to the terrifying property, with plans to at least develop a trilogy around these supernatural battles with the devil. They need moviegoers to feel invested in the series beyond this installment to justify that massive deal.

The Exorcist: Believer had no trouble delivering a first-place finish at the weekend box office with an estimated $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters. While a respectable opening in this climate, the R-rated film came in below expectations domestically as it tries to revive the franchise after Universal reportedly paid a hefty $400 million for rights.
Overseas, the pic started off with $17.9 million from its first 52 markets for a global start of $45.1 million.
The David Gordon Green-directed horror pic hits theaters exactly 50 years after the first Exorcist opened and made cinema history, grossing nearly $450 million at the global box office before adjusting for inflation. Directed by William Friedkin, the film was based on the book by William Peter Blatty and starred Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn.
The Believer recently had to move up its release by one week after Taylor Swift announced that her new concert film, The Eras Tour, will open across the globe on Oct.

Nearly 50 years after William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” landed in theaters to leg out a run as the highest-grossing feature of 1973, a new sequel to it is opening on top of the box office. Universal’s “The Exorcist: Believer” compelled audiences to the tune of an $11.9 million opening day from 3,663 locations, a number including $2.85 million in previews.
The Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment production should have no trouble taking the top spot through the weekend, though “Believer” now looks to be debuting lower than its more optimistic projections, which had forecast a $30 million gross over the three-day frame. The horror entry should take in around $28 million through Sunday.
The film is also doing much less business than director David Gordon Green’s last spin on a classic horror franchise at Blumhouse; his 2018 “Halloween” became a smash hit with a $76 million debut. “Believer” also won’t be matching the 1973 original’s run,...

“Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) topped “Saw X” (Lionsgate) by a healthy $5 million ($23 million to $18 million) on a weekend when either seemed feasible at #1. However, the order here isn’t the real story.
While a “Paw”/”Saw” convergence isn’t exactly the second coming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” it’s still two films with very different appeal that clicked on the same weekend and will end up in profit.
“The Creator” (Disney) ranked as #3 with $14 million, which isn’t the problem so much as its expense. The Gareth Edwards-directed sci-fi actioner in which humans battle AI drew praise for its visual design at a price, but a modest debut for the New Regency production is a setback for those hoping creativity and originality might launch this higher.
Still, that does mean three films grossed over $14 million in September, which is by no means a sure thing. The total gross looks like around $86 million,...

Four new movies ended a month full of sequels, some of which did better than others, but in this case the sequels ended up doing better than most expected, and there were some bona fide surprises. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The big winner of the weekend was Paramount Pictures’ “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” the first family film to get a theatrical release in months. It entered theaters with an 81% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it was essentially a review-proof movie with name-brand value among parents with kids. It opened in second place on Friday with $6.8 million but then grossed a solid $23 million (estimated) for the weekend. It received an “A” CinemaScore, which was not surprising due to its appeal to those same parents with kids.
Lionsgate released “Saw X,” the 10th chapter in the horror franchise that just won’t die, into 3,262 theaters on Friday.

Two new releases and one wide expansion were no match for the animated puppies of Paw Patrol as their newest movie Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie easily snagged first place with $23 million. That number represents a nearly $10 million increase over the $13.1 million earned by 2021’s Paw Patrol: The Movie in its debut. It would seem this sequel has earned its mighty moniker.
The film has garnered some solid critical reviews with the consensus being that this movie is a great way to introduce younger audiences to the big screen experience while the parents of those younger audience members took to the internet to propel the film to a solid 94% audience score and a great A cinemascore. With no family films hitting screens until November 17 when Trolls Band Together opens, you can expect this one to have decent legs, although I don’t expect it to play as well as other...

Happy pups prevailed at the domestic box office this weekend as Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie scared off Saw X and The Creator with $23 million from 3,989 theaters in a needed win for the family marketplace.
The news was just as good overseas, where the sequel flexed its muscle in opening to $23.1 million from 45 markets for a global bow of $46.1 million, a 70 percent uptick over the last pic. Parents and kids made up 90 percent of the audience in North America, where the sequel over-indexed in most regions save for the western part of the U.S.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which cost a lean $30 million to produce before marketing, follows the success of 2021’s Paw Patrol: The Movie that helped solidify Paramount chief Brian Robbins’ standing. That film opened to $13.1 million domestically before turning into a sleeper hit and grossing $140 million globally, a notable figure considering the pandemic and a day-and-date debut on Paramount+.

Duck Dynasty is back with a movie, The Blind, telling of family patriarch Phil Robertson’s (played by Aaron von Andrian) younger years living in Louisiana during the 1960s. The film, which opens in select movie theaters on September 28, is an honest depiction as it touches on the Duck Commander creator’s past struggles with alcoholism and the toll his infidelity took on his marriage with Kay (played by Amelia Eve) before he turned everything around. “Long before Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson became a reality TV star, he fell in love with Miss Kay and started a family, but his demons threatened to tear their lives apart,” the official synopsis reads. “Set in the backwoods swamps of 1960s Louisiana, The Blind shares never-before-revealed moments in Phil’s life as he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, ultimately finding redemption in an unlikely place. Set in the 1960s Deep South and shot on location in Louisiana, The Blind shares never-before-revealed aspects of Robertson’s life as he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, addiction and complicated family dynamics, ultimately finding redemption in an unlikely place. “It was important to us that the film be real,” said Willie Robertson, Phil’s son. “The transformation of Phil proves that anyone can change and that there is always hope.”
Directed by Andrew Hyatt the film stars Aron Von Andrian (Dodger), Amelia Eve (The Haunting Of Bly Manor), Brielle Robillard (The Lake) and Matthew Erick White (Station 19). Written by Stephanie Katz (All In).

Singapore Will Continue to Restrict LGBTQ Content, Even After Decriminalizing Same-Sex Relationships
The Singapore government announced that it will continue to restrict and classify media content with LGBTQ themes, even after its planned decriminalization of same-sex relationships.
The move to repeal a colonial-era law that criminalized sex between men was announced Sunday by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The law, Section 377A of the Penal Code, was introduced in 1938 and established a two-year jail term for “any act of gross indecency” between two men, either in public or in private.
London-based Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen commended the planned repeal. “Long overdue but well done Singapore,” he wrote on Twitter.

Until about a decade ago, the law was used as justification for police raids of gay-owned businesses and street arrests. Since 2010, the law has been rarely enforced, but it continues to inform tough anti-lgbtq policy in media and entertainment.

Abs-cbn, long the leading broadcaster in The Philippines, was Friday denied a bid to win a new franchise. The company had been forced off air in May in what many critics saw as a move to silence critics of the country’s President Rodrigo Duterte.
Since the abrupt decision in May, two of Abs-cbn’s digital channels which were not subject to the same license, were also closed. There have also been multiple discussions of the matter in Congress.
The vote on Friday was the decisive one. And congress decided by a large majority, 70-11, against giving the company a new 25-year franchise.
Duterte is understood to have sought revenge against the broadcaster, which has been consistently critical of his shoot to kill policy in a war on drugs. He also accused the station of refusing his election advertisements.
Duterte’s spokesman Friday said that it had remained neutral over the congressional decision.

The Philippines government has ordered that Abs-cbn, the country’s largest media group, cease broadcasting on TV and radio. The move is widely seen as politically-motivated.
Abs-cbn has been targeted by the country’s President Rodrigo Duterte since 2016, when he accused it of not airing his political campaign advertisements. The company’s networks have also shed light on Duterte’s brutal war on drugs, in which the police force has been accused of executing thousands of drug users and dealers. Duterte has also suggested that Abs-cbn’s family owners should sell the company in order to end his beef with the broadcaster.
The company’s broadcast franchise expired on Monday. But its attempts to renew its license have been wrapped up in political infighting since last year. These have since been made more complicated by the coronavirus outbreak.

“Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson has some choice advice for those who are new to isolation — which is pretty much most of us — because of the coronavirus pandemic since he’s been “self-quarantined” for over 40 years.
BlazeTV agrees, which is why the streaming channel is releasing a few mini-episodes of “In the Woods With Phil,” rebranded as “In the Quarantine With Phil.” In the premiere episode, he quips, “I’ve taken social distancing to a new level.”
Robertson just might be the perfect person to help extroverts through this trying time of self-isolation and social distancing, given he has spent the past few decades far removed from the crowds, floating in a boat in a Louisianan bayou, making duck calls.

If you can’t afford healthcare, worry not, says “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson: The Almighty is currently offering a premium “eternal” healthcare plan for free.

One of the unfortunate byproducts of living under the Trump administration is being necessarily aware of ancillary right-wing partisans that have contributed to his reign. Familiarity with names like Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Stephen Miller, Sebastian Gorka, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Alex Jones are all but mandatory for understanding the ideological machinations behind such a presidency, even if the ultimate conclusion can be accurately reduced to, “The cruelty is the point.” When the inmates have taken over the asylum, it’s important to know their various afflictions.

What happened to Duck Dynasty? It's been one year since the reality show ended its run on A&E and even though we still don't quite know why it ended, we suspect family patriarch Phil Robertson might be to blame… Here's what we do know: The Robertson family revealed the show's imminent end just after the Season 11 premiere in 2016. Following the life of the Robertsons and their family business “Duck Commander,” the show has broken several ratings records on A&E and cable television as a whole. Just a day after the cable network hoped to silence criticism on its Ku Klux Klan-centric docuseries “Generation Kkk” by changing the title, the network has now canceled the show all together.
In a statement, the network said it scrapped the series (which had been renamed “Escaping the Kkk”) after discovering that participants on the show, including Klan members, were paid to participate by production company This Is Just A Test.

A&E may be reshaping its rollout of the new unscripted series “Generation Kkk” in light of early reaction it has seen about the show.
According to insiders, the network is mulling changing the show’s title, to perhaps something less flippant. “Generation Kkk” might sound like a shallow reality show about a bunch of young people hanging out in the Ku Klux Klan, but it’s actually a deep, sober, documentary-style look at families being torn apart by the hate group.
The show, which premieres Jan. 10, has been in production for a year and a half – but it was officially announced just this week. A&E kept “Generation Kkk” under wraps in order to produce the unscripted series without incident, but the timing of the announcement – with many uneasy about the country’s current transition of power – may be backfiring.

Stephen K. Bannon’s ascension from Breitbart News executive to President-elect Donald Trump’s chief White House strategist and senior counselor shocked the world, in no small part because the alt-right figure has no background in government management. However, it’s not the first time Bannon has attempted to lead an industry outside of his professional experience. Bannon’s new role may be an ideal platform for propagandistic ambitions, but his career in independent film — first in distribution, then production — casts doubt on how much he believes in any of it.
Ten years ago, Bannon oversaw the distribution of independent films released by Wellspring Media, a company that supported a wide range of international cinema as well as gay-themed and other “transgressive” titles. Movies acquired and released under his tenure include the experimental Lgbt documentary “Tarnation” and “Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry,” a pro-Kerry documentary that opened during the 2004 election.
