Game, set and match for Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu, who co-direct Nasty, a pleasingly hagiographic portrait of Romanian tennis icon Ilie Năstase. What fun tennis must have been in the 1970s, as it was on the turn from a knockabout sport into the sharp-footed profession it is today. Năstase and his contemporaries brought finesse and genius to the game, but tennis hadn’t yet been fully corrupted by corporate greed and mechanical elite athleticism. These players were hardworking and hard-partying in equal measure, and Năstase was a key ringleader for the frivolity, dating models, and canoodling on the mattresses at Studio 54.
He was also the sport’s chief antagonist a generation before John McEnroe took the mantle. Arguing with his fellow players and with the umpires. But he never questioned them when their calls were right, he insists, in one of the rare modern interview clips with Năstase himself.

This one is for the true Lanthimites, the Dogtooth sisters, the biscuit women, The Killing of a Sacred Deer heads, a film to which the callbacks are so abundant that one can’t help but wonder what the connection is for writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos and co-screenwriter Efthimis Filippou behind the scenes, outside of simply sharing tones and themes that all of their other films share. Regardless, the director as we knew him pre-Emma Stone is back (relatively speaking). And this time… with Emma Stone!
In his eighth feature, old and new Lanthimos merge, the former reflected in story scope, unreal realism, and bone-dry Greek comedy, all wrapped up in the much-felt return of Filippou, with whom he last wrote Sacred Deer just before he launched into the Hollywood stratosphere with Tony McNamara and The Favourite, the dawn of his Emma Stone collaboration-turned-creative-partnership. Critics might have fallen for Luca Guadagnino’s erotic tennis romp but it’s a vapid string of disappointing choices
I have spent the week and a half since seeing Challengers on the brink of throwing a racquet-trashing, expletive-scattering, McEnroe-style tantrum. Is Hawkeye working? Did they not see it? How, for an exhausting Mahut-Isner length of huffing and puffing, practically every single one of the wild swings taken by Luca Guadagnino’s film missed its target and landed out by a country mile? Four-star reviews? Five-star reviews? C’mon, fellow critics. You cannot be serious.
Some points I will concede as inarguable. The film is a box-office champion. And it’s pure fire on the internet, a movie more memeable than even the sainted Saltburn. There are clear generational issues in play: I can see why excitable younger viewers, raised on a largely sexless cinema, have fallen so hard...

Game, set… but there’s not much of a match. “Challengers,” a steamy tennis drama starring Zendaya and directed by Luca Guadagnino, is poised to lead the domestic box office without much in the way of competition.
The film, from Amazon MGM, is projected to collect $12 million to $15 million from 3,400 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Although those are modest projections for any nationwide release, it’s this weekend’s only major new movie and shouldn’t have trouble claiming first place from A24’s “Civil War,” the reigning champion. Last weekend, “Civil War” topped the box office for the second consecutive frame with $11.1 million and has grossed $70 million globally to date. Overall, the domestic box office is 20% behind the same point in 2023, according to Comscore.

In Spring, the Anheuser-Busch InBev brand will launch “Lap of Legends,” a one-hour documentary special that spotlights the journey of Logan Sargeant, the popular American race-car driver. Sargeant will square off against avatars of popular Williams Racing racers from the past, and viewers will see him compete against rivals that use data and AI even as he drives in the physical realm. These “phantom racers” will be created using historical data of the drivers and their original cars.
The film will air via AMC, BBC America and Roku in April. Michelob Ultra is producing the content, and expects the film to be available in 28 countries.

Step into the world of passionate love and intense rivalry as in the epic love story of tennis legend John McEnroe and rock singer Patty Smyth. Their love story is one for the ages — a meeting of two extraordinary talents from different arenas. It wasn’t a classic ‘boy meets girl from the other side of the tracks’ tale, however, it garnered ample attention. In the 1980s, McEnroe’s fiery on-court demeanor and Smyth’s powerful voice made waves in their respective fields. But it wasn’t just their talents that attracted attention. Their tumultuous relationship constantly made headlines, with intense arguments and...

When creators of the Netflix docuseries Quarterback selected three NFL playmakers to shadow for the 2022-23 season, they couldn’t possibly be certain that one, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, would go on to win the Super Bowl; another, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, would have the season of his life; and the third, the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota, would be benched, adding a poignant undertone to balance out the triumphalism.
Netflix’s bet on these three quarterbacks paid off handsomely, both narratively and commercially. With 3.3 million views and 21.4 million hours viewed, per the streamer, the series ranked third among original streaming shows (and fifth among all titles) for its opening week, according to Nielsen — showing Netflix can compete in the sports space even without live rights. The quarterbacks themselves also have expressed satisfaction with the end product.

Wondering why tennis players didn’t bow and curtsy to Kate Middleton or Queen Camilla at Wimbledon? That is before the Princess of Wales returned alongside Prince William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte? There’s a reason for it: the famed tennis tournament’s rules. A Wimbledon rules change altered what players have to do when members of the British royal family sit courtside.

A change to the rules in the early 2000s means tennis players aren’t required to bow and curtsy to royals. So when Kate sat in the Royal Box with the Prince of Wales and their two oldest children, 9-year-old George and 8-year-old Charlotte, on July 16, 2023, for the men’s singles final, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic weren’t technically required to bow.

You know what happened next, as you have voraciously binge-watched Peacock’s Based on a True Story recently and now can’t stop obsessing over it. The crime comedy is slowly becoming all the rage thanks to its highly thrilling storyline, laced with a lot of humor. The simultaneously addictive and funny show has played it boldly by revealing its serial killer in the very first episode. But it has (I bet intentionally) left enough doubts for us to draw many theories, implying that Matt Pierce, the plumber, is not the serial killer.

Despite knowing that Never Have I Ever Season 4 would be the show's last, it hadn't felt like it for the past seven episodes.
It felt like a typical day in Devi's life as she tried to excel in her studies and become as sexually experienced as possible before she got into Princeton.
The show's tone changed considerably as many big changes started happening, and everyone felt ready for the next steps of their lives.
Never Have I Ever Season 4 Episode 8 was packed with many significant moments that made it truly feel like the end was near. It was heart-warming to see these people grow and accept the good things they had coming their way, but it was also sad realizing this was it.
The end was closing in.

The 34th Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The biggest award of the night, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, has historically been considered a strong prognosticator for the Best Picture Oscar each year. It’s the only major precursor that uses a ranked choice voting system like the Academy Awards. Scroll down for the 2023 PGA Awards winners list in three film and 10 TV categories.
The guild and the academy have only disagreed 10 times over the past three decades, with last year’s champ “Coda” claiming both prizes. This year, seven of the guild’s nominees also reaped Oscar bids: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tár,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” The other two PGA nominees, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery...

When tennis champion Boris Becker entered the room for a press conference in Berlin before the world premiere of the documentary about his storied career and troubled personal life, camera shutters clicked furiously and flashes flashed. He is, after all, one of Germany’s most famous native sons and a widely loved sports legend, despite a conviction for a bankruptcy-related fraud that landed him behind bars in Britain for eight months.
“I’m 55 years old and I’m very proud of the things that I’ve done. But I’ve made mistakes,” Becker told the assembled media at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday. “I’ve paid a heavy price for some of the things I did in my past. Today I’m a bit better for it. Hopefully a bit smarter. Maybe a bit more humble.”

Melbourne, Jan 23 (Ians) American Tennis great John McEnroe gave his take on the Australian Open women’s singles draw, saying “Jessica Pegula is the player to beat”.
He added that Kazakh player Elena Rybakina will be the American’s formidable challenge in the tournament.
After the exit of the world no 1 Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff from the tournament, Pegula is the highest seed left in the draw. The world No. 3 has never gone beyond the quarterfinal stage of a Grand Slam but her current form makes her the favourite to win the major.
“I think Pegula is mentally rock solid, she’s got herself in a place where it’s intimidating how strong mentally, she is. Her game, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to break down where some of the other players do,” McEnroe was quoted as saying by Eurosport.

New Delhi, Jan 15 (Ians) American tennis legend John McEnroe has made his prediction as to when Rafael Nadal will retire, saying, “As soon as he feels like he can’t win majors. He’s going to stop.”
Ahead of the Australian Open, Alexander Zverev caused a stir as he made the bold speculation that the Spaniard would retire after Roland-Garros. But Nadal was quick to deny it and said he is not retiring from the sport at least in the next six months.
“It would be tough to write Rafa off at any point, given that he did so well last year. I didn’t expect him to do that last year. So, I continue to be amazed by him. It’s amazing how much hunger he has still. With all the success that he’s had. The other players should look at him. And I was like, ‘this guy...

BAFTA has unveiled the longlists across all categories for its 2023 Film Awards, and Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy The Banshees Of Inisherin and Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front lead.
Martin McDonagh’s impressive Banshees haul includes Best Director, Film, and Screenplay nods while Colin Farrell is up for Leading Actor and Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon were handed Best Support Actor and Actress nods.
Charlotte Well’s festival favorite Aftersun appears on eight lists, including Best Film, Director, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Other titles that are well represented today include Oliver Hermanus’s Living and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
In notable snubs, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel The Way of Water did not make either the Best Film or Director longlists. The box office hit is absent from all major categories but shows strongly in craft categories, including Sound and Special Visual Effects.

The British Academy has revealed the results of the the first round of voting across all 24 categories for the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, with one — perhaps unexpected — film leading the lineup of films vying for nominations.
According to the initial longlists, Netflix’s anti-war epic All Quiet on the Western Front has emerged as an early frontrunner, named in 15 categories, including best film and director. Lurking just a miniature donkey’s snout behind is Searchlight’s darkly comic Irish drama The Banshees of Inisherin from Martin McDonagh, with 14 slots (including best film, director and leading actor). Further down, Everything Everywhere All At Once and Elvis were longlisted 12 times each, while a four-strong pack — Aftersun, Babylon, Tár and Top Gun: Maverick — landed spaces in eight categories each. Awards pundits may note with interest that although The Fabelmans was named in five categories, there wasn’t space in the 16-strong directors longlist for...

With "Andor" season 1 in the bag, it's fair to say showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy and his fellow creatives have exceeded expectations with their "Rogue One" prequel series. What might have been little more than another log to add to the fire that is Disney+ and its never-ending supply of exclusive films and shows has emerged as perhaps the greatest "Star Wars" project released by the Mouse House to date. Heck, it's arguably in contention for the distinction of best live-action "Star Wars" title ever. Yes, really.
In its first season, "Andor" not only revealed the origins of the titular "Rogue One" character, but it also shined a light on the early days of the Rebel Alliance, painting the organization and its founding members in far richer shades of grey rather than the clear-cut heroes seen in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. But for as much as the show has...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on “McEnroe,” a bio-documentary of the 1970s tennis great, with full participation of its introspective subject. It’s currently available on the Showtime Network or available to stream on the Showtime App.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
John Patrick McEnroe learned tennis on the public and club courts during the 1970s tennis boom. He was a different kind of player, more a strategist – he was a math whiz – than an overpowering athlete. But his consistency, tenacity and yelling were his calling cards, and he attained the Number One world ranking in both singles and doubles competition, winning over 70 titles in both categories … the only male player to do so. Along the way, he did a lot of partying, married Tatum O’Neal and came to the end of his career with a perspective that still burns within him.

One of the biggest surprises of Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s “Never Have I Ever” is the voice of legendary tennis player John McEnroe, who narrates the coming-of-age series. But no matter how surprised you were to hear his voice on the show, the tennis star was even more surprised to be asked to narrate it in the first place.
“Who would’ve thought that would be the sort of psychologist or uncle or advisor to an 18- or 17-year-old Indian American girl going through high school,” McEnroe said in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. “So I got to credit Mindy Kaling.”
The decision to cast McEnroe in her semi-autobiographical series was a nostalgic one for Kaling, who grew up in a tennis-loving household.
“It turned out her father was a big tennis fan and must’ve talked about me a lot when she was growing up,” he said....

You cannot be serious! Legendary tennis player John McEnroe, known for his emotional volatility as much as for his staggering on-court greatness, is stepping into the spotlight once again. This Showtime documentary from director Barney Douglas is an intimate, candid exploration of McEnroe as revealed by the man himself as he walks the New York City streets at night. Featuring home videos and previously unseen footage from his epic matches at the US Open and Wimbledon, McEnroe is a journey into the heart and soul of an athlete whose quest for perfection took him to some very dark places. “Thirty-seven psychologists and psychiatrists didn’t help,” McEnroe notes at one point in the doc, which sees him examine his memory to explore why a need for connection both drove him and nearly broke him. It also features contributions from his children and wife Patty Smyth, to take it beyond a...

Tennis legend John McEnroe was unaware of Mindy Kaling before he agreed to narrate ‘Never Have I Ever’.
The 63-year-old narrates the hit comedy-drama series, but McEnroe wasn’t actually aware of the show’s co-creator before he approached him for the role, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Recalling their first meeting at an Oscars party, John said, “I met her at this Vanity Fair Oscar party and we were just crossing paths and (my wife) Patty (Smyth) goes, ‘Oh, that’s Mindy Kaling!'”
“I wasn’t even sure who it was then and (Mindy)’s like, ‘Oh my god, I have this idea of you narrating this show,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, sure you do. Of course I’m gonna narrate this show.’ … And then, hey, it actually – this is actually working!”
By contrast, Mindy’s dad was a huge fan of John during his tennis career.

The best things happen unexpectedly. Pro tennis Hall of Famer John McEnroe has been the narrator on all three seasons of Netflix's Never Have I Ever, co-created by Mindy Kaling. It's proven to be a winning, yet unexpected, combination given that McEnroe is a 63-year-old white dude and the series depicts the high school trials and tribulations of Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her diverse group of friends. "Who would've thought that I would be the sort of psychologist or uncle or advisor to an 18- or 17-year-old Indian American girl going through high school," McEnroe joked to Entertainment Tonight. "So I got to credit Mindy Kaling." So, how did McEnroe...

From the very first episode of Never Have I Ever, Devi has professed to want to lose her virginity Asap. Though her heart has not always been 100 percent behind the endeavor — as was the case in the Season 3 premiere — she enters the season finale with the determination not to be one of those “dusty” virgins who goes off to college unsullied.
The topic arises after two significant developments take place. First, Devi is chosen to attend a prestigious — if hippie-ish — program for seniors in Colorado. Admittance all but paves the way to the Ivy League, increasing her chances of getting admitted to Princeton.
