- He was the founder of Workman Publishing, now one of the few remaining independent book publishers in the US. He created the "Page-a-Day" desk calendar; it was introduced in 1979.
- He received a bachelor's degree from Yale in 1960. He was a newspaper copy boy and bookstore clerk for several years, before joining the sales department of Dell Books.
- When the cartoonist B. Kliban's first "Cat" book was published in 1975, sales were slow until Workman sent his staff to a Madison Square Garden cat show to sell copies. He had Kliban cat posters printed for bookstore displays. Sales picked up. Workman was an early believer in merchandising, and soon followed with Kliban-cat pillows, mugs, and calendars.
