Nick Offerman became a first-time Independent Spirit Awards winner during the 2024 awards ceremony Sunday, winning for best supporting performance in a new scripted series for his role in The Last of Us.
“I am astonished to be in this category, which is bananas,” Offerman said onstage. “Congrats to all of you. This is crazy.”
“Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent. Stories with guts, that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, ‘Why did you have to make it a gay story?’ We say, ‘Because you ask questions like that.’ It’s not a gay story. It’s a love story, you asshole. So more of that,” he said, speaking about his role as Bill in the critically acclaimed episode “Long, Long Time.”

Claire Foy and Richard E. Grant are set to lead a new period drama directed by Peter Glanz.
Titled “Savage House,” the eighteenth century black comedy also stars Bel Powley (“A Small Light”) and Jack Farthing (“The Lost Daughter”).
Kila Lord Cassidy (“The Wonder”), Richard McCabe (“Napoleon”), Vicki Pepperdine (“Poor Things”) and Pip Torrens (“The Iron Lady”) round out the cast. The film recently wrapped in the U.K.
“Set against the backdrop of eighteenth century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – this is a timely and darkly satirical story of Sir Chauncey Savage (Grant) and Lady Savage (Foy) and their blind pursuit of a better life,” reads the logline. “It is not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed. Filled with duels, decadence, and bloodshed, this is a madcap play on class and power.”

Haley Bennett (Cyrano, Swallow, The Girl On The Train) is set to lead Night and Day, Justine Waddell’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel, to be directed by BAFTA nominee Tina Gharavi (I Am Nasrine, Cleopatra: African Queens). WestEnd Films has boarded the the German-Irish-u.K. co-production and is introducing the project to buyers in Cannes.
Set in an era when glass ceilings were made of concrete, Bennett will play Katharine Hilbery — one woman who insisted on reaching for the stars. Based on what has been called Woolf’s funniest novel, Night and Day is described as an “unromantic comedy” about a passionate astronomer who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage. Contemporary in tone, the story of Katharine’s bold challenge to the Edwardian patriarchy is set against the backdrop of the suffragette movement and advances in science and technology, at the turn of the 20th century.

Fancy watching a no-nonsense Yorkshire cop on the brink of retirement finally taking down her nemesis? How about an Oxford scholar pitting his wits against a decades-long conspiracy? These are the premises for just two of the exciting British TV shows about to arrive in the US but that’s not all: there’s also globe-trotting sci-fi with big ideas, a fast-paced dark comedy, a remarkable depiction of marriage by two British acting stalwarts, and more besides.
From cosy crime to original comedy, here are the UK TV highlights coming to America:
Happy Valley Series 3
BBC America, Acorn TV, AMC+ – 22nd May at 10pm Et/Pt
Sally Wainwright’s excellent Yorkshire-based crime drama Happy Valley had been off UK screens since 2016, but returned for its highly-anticipated third and final series earlier this year.
The show centres on the straight-talking police sergeant Catherine Cawood, and her ongoing feud with the dangerous criminal Tommy Lee Royce.

Could BBC One’s Rain Dogs be the first time a fairly explicit “glory hole” scene, complete with slurpy sound effects, has been transmitted on British television? The nearest precedent I can think of was a transmission of the biopic of the outrageous Sixties playwright Joe Orton, Prick Up Your Ears, but, from memory, there was no full-on fellatio in the bogs depicted. So Rain Dogs has at least made its mark for that.
That sounds a bit dismissive, but it’s the reverse. Sleaze – proper, depressing, tawdry sleaze; sleaze infused with danger and drink – is rarely portrayed with much conviction on the telly, but this eight-part darker-than-dark sort-of-comedy makes you just as uneasy as our hero of the underworld, peep show performer Costello. The not-so-good-time girl is played with the usual brilliance by Daisy May Cooper. After Cooper’s delusional, unloved, Kerry in This Country through the gaslit Nic in Am I Being Unreasonable?...

With a deceptively simple plot, a somewhat evasive tone and a cast of stars who are far better known on the Other Side of the Pond, the new half-hour dramedy Rain Dogs may be a tough sell for HBO.
Allow me to try: Rain Dogs is The Last of Us with poverty instead of mushroom zombies. I could add that it’s also a fine economic counterbalance to the satirical affluence of The White Lotus and Succession, but nah. Let’s go with The Last of Us as my primary point of comparison. Sure, that’s inviting disappointment for a handful of [million] video game fans, but if it gets some additional viewers to check out a rewarding, but undeniably tough, little show, it’s probably worth it.
On a more practical level, series creator Cash Carraway is essentially giving The Object of My Affection — you may remember either Stephen McCauley...

In one of the opening scenes of the new HBO dramedy Rain Dogs, impoverished single mom Costello (Daisy May Cooper) has her daughter Iris (Fleur Tashjian) pretend to be sick so they can skip out on a cab fare they can’t afford. As they run from the irate driver, an apologetic Costello calls out, “I’m not usually a prick, promise!” Then, after a beat, she admits, “Well, sometimes I am!”
The fascinating, poignant, and at times darkly funny Rain Dogs exists primarily within that pause between the two sentences.

If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.
Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

As has been pointed many times so far this year, 2022 has been a treasure trove for stories about con artists. In the TV world, spring brought plenty of stories chronicling how people in the recent past have hoodwinked their way to enormous wealth and cultural cachet purely by virtue of lulling the right people into a false sense of security. Of course, 2010s tech and entrepreneurial climbers do not have a monopoly on grift, in worlds either real or fictional.
Premiering in the UK back on February and arriving on Prime Video this week, the new psychological drama “Chloe” makes the perfect bookend to a half-year trend of people tricking themselves into situations far greater than they imagined.
Much like those other stories, “Chloe” begins on a humble scale. Becky Green (Erin Doherty) spends her idle moments scrolling social media, in whatever time she has in between taking care of...

Twelve years after the launch of Instagram, it’s hardly news that no one’s life is really as blissful as it looks on their carefully curated feeds. Yet as Becky (Erin Doherty) can attest, it can be difficult to remember that when you’re stuck in a run-down two-bedroom flat on the unfashionable side of Bristol with your ailing mother, poring over snapshots from the much prettier, posher life of someone you used to know.
In fact, it’ll take most of the six hourlong episodes of Chloe for Becky to learn just how messy and troubled the life of her childhood friend Chloe Fairbourne (Poppy Gilbert) really was. But if the series ultimately offers few revelations we haven’t seen before, they’re still ones that ring more or less true, especially with Doherty’s mesmerizing performance at the center.

For Neon and Topic Studios’ film Spencer, screenwriter Steven Knight and director Pablo Larraín used elements from various genres to craft a not-so-biographical drama about Princess Diana.
Starring the Oscar-nominated Kristen Stewart as the Princess, Larraín’s reimagining of a Royal Christmas at Sandringham journeys into the mind of a lonely and disturbed Diana as she navigates the “house rules” during the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles. The story follows the strict regimen of the princess’ days — wardrobe, endless formal family meals and a dramatic pheasant shoot — punctuated by Diana’s anxiety attacks and imaginings of ill-fated queens past.
Jack Farthing, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and Sean Harris also star.
When asked during the film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event why he felt it was necessary to add elements of horror and thriller to the story, Larraín attributed it to Stewart’s performance and her ability to adapt.

New movies feature key scenes of central female characters legging it down streets or through fields. Is cinema finally keeping pace with real life?
There is a moment in Spencer, Pablo Larraín’s imagining of an ill-fated weekend at Sandringham for Diana, Princess of Wales (Kristen Stewart), when Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) tells his wife, “You have to be able to make your body do things you hate. For the good of the country.” Diana grips the edge of a billiards table as if trying to hold herself together; behind white knuckles, satin, and perfect hair, untapped rage is seething.
Diana’s fight to contain herself – to remain statue-like, elegant, and prim – repeatedly threatens to boil over. When it does, she does not take Charles’s advice. Instead, she runs as if her life depends on it. In a surreal montage of her past and present selves, Larraín shows a...

“We wanted it to be a fairy story, because she was a princess so and I think all fairy stories are horror stories with happy endings,” reveals Steven Knight about constructing his screenplay for “Spencer” as a fairy tale rather than just another biopic. “They’re all pretty horrific, children or people being captured in a castle,” he suggests. “So this fairy story, I wanted to tell with the knowledge that it should be quite scary, because we’re in her head and she’s quite scared.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

It is uncommon for directorial debuts, such as Maggie Gyllenhaal’s strikingly distinctive The Lost Daughter, to be as sure handed as this film is or as well put together in almost every aspect, such as the film’s brilliant lead performance courtesy of Olivia Colman.
While on holiday in Greece, Leda (Colman) appears remarkably attentive to the interactions between a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and her daughter, also vacationing on the same beach. As Leda observes the mother and daughter, as well as their extended family, she reminisces about her own memories of early motherhood and the choices she made that eventually brought her to the place she is today.
These flashbacks show Leda as a young mother, now played by Jessie Buckley, who we quickly see is overwhelmed by the demands that motherhood has thrust upon her as she desperately tries to forge her own path as an academic.

It was supposed to be the year where movies came back. With the pandemic seeming to turn the corner (for a time), and cinemas opening back up around the world, your local theater offered a treasure trove of options, from old reliable favorites via mega Hollywood franchises to respites from the familiar as new voices and stories took center stage.
Twelve months later, things obviously didn’t go as smoothly as we all hoped. While multiplex business has rarely been bigger for superheroes and big balls of alien goo, most other kinds of film have taken a hit, at least on the big screen. Even so, it’s been a significant year for movies as a whole, with audiences still being treated to an abundance of excellence be it in theaters or streaming at home. “Maggie’s writing was really brilliant and concise,” declares costume designer Edward K. Gibbon, who first worked with Maggie Gyllenhaal in 2014 on “The Honourable Woman” and has re-teamed with the actor (and now writer/director) on her feature directorial debut “The Lost Daughter.” “It’s all about surfaces,” he explains when looking back at his brief for the film. “With Leda you see one surface and then you see beneath it as things go a little off kilter and the same with Nina; you see her at a distance that she is the hot girl on the beach and you know is fabulous, and then you get a little closer and things are a little bit less perfect.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

For Neon’s not-precisely-biographical Spencer, screenwriter Steven Knight and filmmaker Pablo Larraín assiduously wanted to avoid anything resembling a conventional biopic feel when exploring the suffocatingly cloistered and constantly scrutinized life of Princess Diana of Wales over the course of the Christmas holiday weekend with her in-laws, England’s Royal Family, in 1991.
Instead, they were looking to craft an impressionistic, fable-like take on Diana’s discomfort in her regal role. In contrast to Larraín’s deep research dive into the seemingly never-ending accounts of the late princess’ relentlessly dissected existence, Knight took a different tack altogether.

Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, along with Neon and Decal, announce the release of Spencer, coming to DVD and Blu-Ray January 11, 2022. The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. The critically acclaimed drama stars Kristen Stewart, Timothy Spall, Jack Farthing, Sean Harris, and is directed by Pablo Larrain (Jackie)

Spencer director Pablo Larraín said Saturday that while he and screenwriter Steven Knight took different immersive paths when developing the film’s screenplay, the result was unlike any other he’d worked on: the finished script matched the final edit scene for scene.
“The movie right now has the same order – exactly the same order – as the script… which is highly unusual,” Larraín said during a panel with Knight at Deadline’s Contenders Film: New York, adding that the Neon and Topic movie was conceived as a fable about the life of Princess Diana (played by Kristen Stewart) rather than a more conventional biopic.
The pair had previously collaborated on the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis-inspired film Jackie, and Larraín said Knight’s process is a swift one without an abundance of drafts. “He wrote it really quickly, which is very amazing,” said the director. “He’s not a man who does a lot of drafts.
