There's more "Star Trek" television right now that Trekkies know what to do with. Whether you prefer it when the franchise is philosophical yet whimsical in the manner of Gene Roddenberry's original ground-breaking series ("Strange New Worlds"), a mix of raunchy humor and emotionally mature sci-fi storytelling ("Lower Decks"), or embracing a "warm, flashy, 'heart dangling on the sleeve with such force that you might as well brace for an aerial spray' ethos" (as /Film's own Jacob Hall put it in his review of the "Discovery" season 5 premiere), there's something for "Trek" enthusiasts of ever shade right now -- again, on the small screen. Unfortunately, if you enjoy it when the property stretches its wings and takes flight in theaters, you've been plumb out of luck since 2016.

Bestselling author Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" book series focuses on a protagonist who never, ever fails. The titular Reacher is a one-man unit, untraceable and unkillable, who moves efficiently from one place to another like a phantom and bests the bad guys by the end of every case. However, Reacher's humanity is an essential aspect of his character — his deliberate isolation is a double-edged sword, a cross he has to bear for the sake of being the best at what he does. Prime Video's "Reacher," with its second season now underway, perfectly balances this aspect of Reacher's personality, with Alan Ritchson bringing the beloved hero to life in all his dynamic, idiosyncratic glory as he moves on from Margrave and solves a fresh mystery in the upcoming season.

James Wan is one of our true modern horror masters. As the man who gave us the "Saw" and "Insidious" franchises, not to mention "The Conjuring" universe, there are few filmmakers working today who can claim they've done as much to further the genre since the turn of the century. One of the filmmaker's only horror films to not start a franchise, actually, remains 2021's "Malignant." But that's not to say a franchise is out of the question, as Wan won't rule out a reunion with Madison and Gabriel.
/Film's own Jacob Hall recently spoke with Wan in honor of the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which sees Wan putting on his blockbuster hat once again. During the conversation, he asked Wan what it would take to make "Malignant 2" happen. Here's what he had to say about it:
"It's funny how much 'Malignant 2' questions I get asked.

When "Reacher" season 1 debuted in 2022, no one could have expected it would become one of Prime Video's most watched shows of all time. But just a few days after it arrived on the streaming service, it had already been renewed for season 2. Now, that second season is upon us, and Jack Reacher will once again be venturing out to beat up bad guys for our entertainment. Judging by the trailer for "Reacher" season 2, this round of episodes will be every bit as brutal as the last.
But has anyone stopped to ask the question of how this show did so well in the first place? After all, it's not as if there's a dearth of premium action dramas on TV these days. Well, if you ask fans of Lee Child's books, on which the show is based, Alan Ritchson probably has a lot to do with it.

All of the best horror films are traditionally more than just "a horror film." George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is a zombie movie, yes, but it's also a satire of consumerism and an exploration of how close the crumbling of societal norms is at any given moment. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a masterpiece of practical effects, but it is also a sci-fi body horror film examining themes of paranoia, identity, isolation, fear of the unknown, and masculine hierarchies in survival situations. Despite what naysayers may cry out these days, horror has always been political, but one franchise has consistently been a lot more "in your face" about it.
I'm talking of course, about "The Purge" movies. Created by James DeMonaco and introduced by Blumhouse in 2013 with "The Purge," the films take place in an almost "Twilight Zone" alternate reality of America, where the country enjoys...

"Reacher" returns this week for a new season of righteous butt-kicking, and fans of Lee Child's super-popular book series will no doubt tune in. A straightforward action show on the surface, "Reacher" is elevated by a self-aware sense of humor, complex season-long mysteries, and an ensemble of unorthodox crime-solvers who are as brainy as they are battle-ready. At a press day /Film's Jacob Hall attended ahead of the show's season 2 premiere (you can read our season 2 review here), the cast of the new season contemplated the far-ranging, uh, reach of "Reacher." Namely, they responded to a comment about the show and book series' audience, which at one point was found to be made up of 60% women.
Why are women drawn to "Reacher," a series whose premise makes it sound like it would perpetuate the same toxic masculinity-fueled tropes as countless other "violent man on a road to vengeance" action sagas?...

In a pleasant surprise for "Reacher" fans, this year's "The Fall of the House of Usher" served as a reunion for season 1 stars Willa Fitzgerald and Malcolm Goodwin. The Mike Flanagan-created, Edgar Allan Poe-inspired Grand Guignol saw the two actors once again sharing the screen, this time as future enemies C. Auguste Dupin and Madeline Usher during the show's 1979-set flashbacks. The only downside? It was also a bittersweet reminder the duo wouldn't be returning for "Reacher" season 2.
Indeed, much of the pleasure of "Reacher" season 1 comes from watching the hunky super-sleuth vagabond Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) unravel a criminal conspiracy in the small town of Margrave, Georgia, with the help of Margrave's by-the-book Chief Detective Oscar Finlay (Goodwin) and spunky police officer Roscoe Conklin (Fitzgerald). Nicolas Cage is the most meta of modern actors. There are exceptions (most recently his heartbreaking work in Michael Sarnoski's "Pig"), but, for better or worse, we are almost always aware that we are watching a Cage performance. This isn't a new development. He's been an emoting machine dating back to Francis Ford Coppola's "Peggy Sue Got Married," and won a Best Actor Oscar for his Ray-Milland-on-steroids portrayal of an alcoholic in "Leaving Las Vegas."
As much as we love Cage going full Cage, those "Pig" roles are vital to his appeal as an actor. They remind us that he is a thoughtful, deeply intuitive performer capable of drawing us into the world of introverts and quietly damaged people. Kristoffer Borgli's dark comedy "Dream Scenario" is one such film -- to a point. Cage plays Paul Matthews, a mild-mannered biology professor who inexplicably begins appearing in the...

A lot of filmmakers have attempted to create a new horror icon for the next generation, and most have failed rather miserably. "Terrifier" director and special effects artist Damien Leone has managed to usher in a fresh wave of blood and terror with his creation, Art the Clown. The enormously successful sequel, "Terrifier 2," was designed and crafted from the ground up with a ragtag FX team, where most of the gloriously gory set pieces were done almost exclusively by Leone and producer Phil Falcone. To achieve the amount of viscera needed to send even the most hardcore gorehounds heading for the aisle, there were some very special ingredients involved to ensure the maximum amount of gross-out potential.
Throughout horror history, there have been countless recipes for blood that have been used, including but not limited to Hershey's Chocolate Syrup flowing down the drain in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and...

For a generation of moviegoers, the Farrelly Brothers name means something. Specifically, it means a very pointed combination of gross-out comedy and emotional sentiment — films that are more than happy to dabble in literal excrement and ask you honestly shed a little tear over the characters embarking on some kind of emotional journey. The headlines and the buzz are always about the nastiest gags and grossest moments (she puts what in her hair?), but audiences often who showed up hoping to be appalled often found themselves lulled into something weirdly gentle and sweet. Sometimes, the combination doesn't work at all and the result is an unpleasant, tonal disaster. But when it does work? Well, that's when you get something that feels very specific to Peter and Bobby Farrelly, two of the most memorably mainstream, lowbrow auteurs to emerge from the '90s.

Hand over your crowns, Batman and Iron Man, it's Mario and Freddy Fazbear's time to reign dominant over the box office. Yes, it seems video game adaptations might be the next big thing in Hollywood, now that the generation of kids who were raised on gaming consoles and point-and-click titles are old enough to purchase movie tickets for themselves. And with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" allowing Nintendo to successfully expand into the film business, what better time for the paterfamilias of high-fantasy video game series, "The Legend of Zelda," to finally make its way to the big screen in live-action?
This isn't the first time Nintendo has adapted the adventures of Link, Zelda, and the other citizens of Hyrule for a different medium. 1989's "The Super Mario Bros. Another year of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is drawing to a close and, folks, it's been a pretty turbulent flight. The hope was that co-writer/director Nia DaCosta's "The Marvels" would, at the least, bring things in for a smoother landing, seeing as it assembles a squad of superheroes from some of the better MCU entries in recent years. Leading the way, of course, is Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who made a splash in 2019 with her solo film, "Captain Marvel," on her way to socking Thanos in the jaw (somewhat literally) in "Avengers: Endgame." But far from being alone, "The Marvels" sees Carol joining forces with her late bestie Maria's daughter Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) -- who's fresh off gaining some shiny super-powers of her own in the acclaimed series "WandaVision" -- and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a rambunctious teen and Captain Marvel fangirl who stole everyone's collective hearts...

"Terrifier 2" caused a stir in 2022 for reportedly making audience members vomit and faint at screenings. But there was more to the success of director Damien Leone's $250,000 indie horror than sensationalist headlines. "Terrifier 2" was memorable for David Howard Thornton's committed performance as Art the Clown, a seemingly invulnerable manifestation of evil who embarks on a Halloween massacre. Thornton had played the character in 2016's "Terrifier," but with the sequel becoming as successful as it did, Art was cemented as perhaps the first original slasher character to make any kind of significant cultural impact since Ghostface.
Of course, it helped that "Terrifier 2" was even bigger, weirder, and bloodier than the original, delivering 138 minutes of unadulterated brutality while still presenting a more fully realized plot than its predecessor. According to horror director extraordinaire Mike Flanagan, "Terrifier 2" was worthy of the designation "MegaSlasher" for the way in which...

As Roger Ebert's old adage goes, no good film is too long, and no bad film is short enough. When it comes to a film's running time, the better movies will expertly pace out their scenes and present their story in exactly the way they need to be presented, whether that takes 60 minutes or 600. There's no universal bellwether connecting running time to quality. A film can drag through a very brief running time, or be riveting for several straight hours.
It's only when certain genres traditionally associated with brief running times suddenly see the release of a two-hour-plus entry that discussions of film length are revived in earnest. Action pictures are typically 90 to 100 minutes. When a superhero film comes along that's 180 minutes (as was "The Batman"), questions arise pertaining to the necessity of that length. The same might be said of Damian Leone's 2022 sleeper hit "Terrifier 2," a gore-soaked...

Damien Leone's "Terrifier 2" provided the world with one of the great cinematic success stories of 2022. Made for a tony budget of only $250,000, "Terrifier 2" caused a stir when reports began to emerge of its extreme gore causing some audience members to become sick or faint in theaters. This notoriety attracted more and more curious ticket-buyers, allowing the film to ultimately rack up over $15 million in box office receipts. "Terrifier 2" will be re-released in theaters today, November 1, 2023, to assure that all bloodthirsty looky-loos will have a chance to test their mettle.

We love Art the Clown, don't we, folks? That black-and-white, blood-drenched menace has worked his way into our hearts via the "Terrifer" franchise, a DIY horror series that's become something of a cultural phenomenon. Art first appeared in the short films "The 9th Circle" and "Terrifier" before starring in a segment in the anthology film "All Hallows' Eve." Then he finally got to take the lead in two feature films, the gory "Terrifier" and the even gorier "Terrifeir 2." And that's just the beginning! Art is set to return in the Christmas-set "Terrifer 3," a film due out sometime in 2024.

Fans the world over are still reeling after the unexpected and tragic death of "Friends" star Matthew Perry. The 54-year-old actor had been on screens big and small for over 40 years, a prolific performer who grew up in the public eye. However, it was his performance as Chandler Bing throughout all 10 seasons of the pop culture-changing NBC sitcom "Friends" that made him a household name and television icon. /Film's own Jacob Hall called him the "snarky, sincere heart" of the series, pointing out that Perry had done the impossible. Scott Derrickson's upcoming horror thriller, "The Black Phone," is based on Joe Hill's short story of the same name.
