Gold Coast Film Festival returns with ‘Playing with Sharks’, ‘Dive Club’, ‘This Little Love of Mine’
The line-up for the Gold Coast Film Festival has been unveiled ahead of its return next month following a Covid-related hiatus.
The 12-day event will feature four world premieres, six Australian premieres, nine Queensland premieres, and two exclusive preview screenings across the Gold Coast, alongside Q&As with filmmakers and some of Australia’s leading cast and crew.
It will also be the first festival held under new director Aimée Lindorff, who took the reins from Lucy Fisher towards the end of last year.
Lindorff says this year’s program is about inspiring movie fans to return to the cinema and cinema-hopefuls to pursue their passion for the silver screen.
“We have an incredible mix of national and international films and documentaries starring some big names and tackling even bigger story lines,” she says.
“The prestigious Screen Industry Gala Awards will return at Movie World, where we will celebrate the...

Rachel Okine.
Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford’s Aquarius Films has stepped up its feature film and TV drama development slate, collaborating with such creatives as Justine Flynn, Del Kathryn Barton and Huna Amweero, Clementine Ford, Anya Beyersdorf, Roger Monk and Rhys Graham.
The production company gained momentum after hiring former eOne and Hopscotch Features executive Rachel Okine in the newly created role of managing director.
Okine joined in March, just as the pandemic struck. After a pause when, she says, Aquarius’ focus on growth switched to survival mode, the development pace picked up.
The Unusual Suspects, a four-part crime caper for Sbs co-funded by Screen Australia starts pre-production next week. A whodunit set in the Filipino domestic worker community in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, it’s scripted by Jessica Redenbach, Roger Monk (Nowhere Boys) and Vonne Patiag (Halal Gurls).

Danielle Boesenberg.
With five shorts she has worked on screening this week at the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival screen editor Danielle Boesenberg must have a good shot at success at the festival.
She knew Ritual and Dust Devil were having their world premieres because she had a heads-up from the filmmakers. When the program came out she was pleasantly surprised to find Birdie, Black Lips and I F*cked A Mermaid and No One Believes Me were also selected.
“What I love about the five is they are all very different: two dramas, a comedy, a documentary and a queer film,” she tells If.
After working on more than 30 shorts she is looking to take the next step into features and long-form TV dramas, noting: “It’s just a matter of finding the right project.”
Most ambitiously, she and her partner, screenwriter Sam Meikle, hope to co-direct a movie...
