It was the west coast critics’ turn to hand out honors for the best films and performances of 2022, with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca) landing on a tie for their top honors, between A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Focus Features’ “Tár.” It was the fourth time the group tied in its 48-year history after “Dog Day Afternoon” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975), “Network” and “Rocky” (1976) and “Gravity” and “Her” (2013).
Along with the top prize for “Tár,” Todd Field won both director and screenplay prizes for the film. His leading woman Cate Blanchett walked away with the best lead performance honor, which she shared with British veteran actor Bill Nighy for his work in Oliver Hermanus’ “Living.”
It was the first year the group switched to gender-neutral acting categories, which they announced back in October.

"You still think I'm the greatest?" 1091 Pictures has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Curtis, set in Detroit, made by filmmaker Chris Bailey, who is originally from Detroit as well. This won the Best Narrative Feature award at last year's American Black Film Festival where it premiered. It also played at the Atlanta Film Festival last year. Dwight Henry stars as a former basketball star who battles with his mental illness while scouring the streets of Detroit with a young boy, in search of his lost high school championship ring. "Curtis is about regret, mental illness, and ultimately believing in yourself. My whole mantra for the film is: Everybody has a story. So I'm very grateful to the entire team at 1091 Pictures for seeing the importance of sharing a story like Curtis with the world," director Chris Bailey states. The cast includes Alex Henderson, Kalena Knox, and Thaddeus Street.

Who’s up for a road trip? I’m guessing most folks are, after being cooped up for much of this year. Well, since things aren’t quite back to normal, perhaps a cinematic one would fill the bill. Maybe a state to state jaunt would be in order, with a somewhat shady duo behind the wheel ala’ Smokey And The Bandit or Thelma And Louise, perhaps just indulging in an occasional “dine ‘n’ dash” or a “fill-up and flee”. Oh, and aside from the authorities, some roughnecks are on your trail. That’s the elements of the new comic crime caper Easy Does It. But with these dimwits churning up dust, nothing is ever easy (especially for the audience).

Two best buds. An accidental hostage. One crazy shot at running down the American dream. Gravitas has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie crime comedy titled Easy Does It, which is debuting next month. The filmmaking team is comprised of 100% Louisiana residents - most of whom are University of New Orleans film alums. Two best friends and their accidental hostage careen across the 1970s American South on a treasure hunt turned crime spree. The film's cast features Bryan Batt, Dwight Henry, Ben Matheny, Matthew Paul Martinez, Susan Gordon, and Linda Hamilton as "The King"; with voice roles from John Goodman and Harry Shearer. And featuring original music from Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. At least they made the film look like it's from the 70s. Because it seems a bit out-of-date already. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Will Addison's Easy Does It, direct from YouTube...

Without fail, every single year there are Oscar hopefuls that fall victim to controversy. Some are well founded, some are pure smoke, and some are caught in between. This week, the year’s most controversy laden film hits theaters. In fact, it’s out today. The controversy isn’t due to the film’s content, but the past actions of its filmmaker. I won’t get into what Nate Parker and his co-writer Jean McGianni Celestin were accused of and the subsequent issues, but it’s clear that to some degree, it has affected the release. Back at the Sundance Film Festival, it was hailed as a potential Best Picture frontrunner. Now, it’s possibly an Oscar also-ran. What happened? Well, at least in my opinion, hype died down and it’s being seen for the flawed work that it truly is. Controversy aside, it’s just a mixed bag of a movie.

The Birth of a Nation is so heart-wrenchingly moving. A biography of the emancipation movement that began with Nate Turner, slave and preacher, a character played brilliantly by writer/director Nate Parker. The story begins in the antebellum South in 1809. Nate as a very young man is thought to be a leader that will do great things, having some unique marks that was felt only a leader would have. Shortly into the story the despicable conditions a slave community would have to endure was deplorable. Nat’s father Isaac (Dwight Henry) set out one night to try and salvage some food for his family. He was caught by a group of runaway slave patrolmen without a pass. The very evil ring leader of the posse Raymond Cobb (Jackie Earle Haley) was horrifically confrontational, and the scene turned into a bloodbath, with Isaac narrowly escaping, returning to his family and quickly saying goodbye.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Another bad weekend where nothing really popped, which is bad news for a month at the box office where only Clint Eastwood’s Sully exceeded any expectations. Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children came out just below my predictions with $29 million, but the Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg disaster flick Deepwater Horizon was right around where I predicted with $20.2 million. The comedy Masterminds tanked with just $6.5 million for the weekend to end up in sixth place while Disney’s The Queen of Katwe did slightly better than predicted with $2.5 million.

Sundance darling The Birth of a Nation has fast become one of the early dark horses going into this year’s awards circuit – and it’s little wonder why.
Set against the antebellum South, Nate Parker’s creative tour-de-force – Parker wrote, directed, produced and starred in the inspired race drama – revolves around the true story of one Nat Turner, the slave and preacher who famously staged one of the most important uprisings in American history in the Virginia of 1830.

The Birth of a Nation was the biggest movie at Sundance this year. Since its barnstorming world premiere during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it’s been onwards and upwards for Nate Parker’s impassioned race drama The Birth of a Nation.
Upon landing a lucrative and record-breaking deal at Fox Searchlight – an eye-watering $17.5 million, no less – the period piece completed the proverbial one-two punch by nailing down an opportune October release window. And now, you can see what all the fuss is about with the film’s powerful first trailer.
Rooted in the throes of the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation will place Parker the role of Nat Turner, a brave, unflinching rebel who sparked a landmark uprising – one that would go down in the history books as one of the most important in the country’s troubled history.

Fox Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for director Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation.
Set against the antebellum South, The Birth Of A Nation follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
In his Sundance Film Festival review, The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy says the film, “offers up more than enough in terms of intelligence, insight, historical research and religious nuance to not at all be considered a missed opportunity. Far more of the essentials made it into the film than not; its makers’ dedication and minute attention are constantly felt, and the subject matter is still rare enough onscreen as to be welcome and needed,...

The biggest success story at this year’s Sundance Film Festival — or any festival in history, if we’re talking about the acquisition price — was certainly Nate Parker‘s writing-directing debut The Birth of a Nation. Picked up by Fox Searchlight for a record $17.5 million, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award winner tells the true story of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. We’ve still got half-a-year to go before it arrives in theaters, but today Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer.
I said in my review, “Directed, written, produced by, and starring Nate Parker, the Nat Turner biopic The Birth of a Nation is an unflinching and hopeful call to action where the helmer’s passion can be felt in every frame. By nodding to D. W. Griffith’s controversial, formally groundbreaking 1915 film, Parker is forging a new cinematic history for one of America’s most shameful eras.

Check out another short film from Michigan native Luke Jaden (earlier this week, we featured "The Neverlands" starring Langston Fishburne, Son of Laurence Fishburne; and ‘Wolf Who Cried Boy’ starring Barkhad Abdi and Dwight Henry); this one is titled "King Ripple," and stars other names you'd be familiar with, like Keith Stanfield, as well as Torrey Wigfield, Allie DeBerry, newcomer Callaghan Belle, and Luke Jaden himself. The film is described as a "post-apocalyptic, tension-flaring, tale of trepidation," that "follows four teenagers as they travel into a desolate and decrepit urban wasteland brought forth by the very being...

Torrey Wigfield leads the cast, playing a young scrapper living off the streets of Detroit. He's joined by Barkhad Abdi who plays a limo driver who acts as a fence for stolen copper; Dwight Henry as the no-nonsense junkyard owner; and Peter Carey as a ruthless scrapyard owner. As is so often the case with each passing year, 2016’s Sundance Film Festival ignited a flurry of activity among studios and filmmakers alike, with a number of the major players moving in to acquire the hottest properties in town. The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Ever since its debut at Telluride and Tiff, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave has been gaining critical acclaim left, right, and centre.
The film was long one of the most anticipated of the year, with McQueen’s making a return behind the camera following 2011’s acclaimed (and Oscar-snubbed) Shame.
Whilst it’s now playing in Us cinemas, UK audiences will have to wait until January for its arrival, and eOne has begun gearing up the momentum towards its release with a new TV spot for our shores.
12 Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive,...
