Film-maker, academic, teacher, researcher, musician, screenwriter, father, and husband, John has explored many facets of moving image production - including producing, directing, editing, cinematography, writing, digital compositing, and sound.
Born to parents Olivia and John McMullan in Perth, Australia, in 1969, he grew up with four sisters and a passion for technique, technology, and storytelling. John did well in school at maths, English, and science, while also playing basketball and winning many awards at short-distance track. In his teen years he picked up the guitar and found he had a flair for it - spending many hours practicing the works of guitarists such as Hendrix and Knopfler while also writing some of his own.
John twenties saw him travelling extensively around Australia, India, Nepal, and Thailand, and his love for exploring and embracing other cultures was cemented. Since then John has traveled many countries, including Laos, Vietnam, England, Greece, Canada, USA, and Cambodia. In the 1980s John also realized that he could sing and went on to play music professionally and for self-enjoyment on and off over the next 20 years.
It was also in John's mid-twenties where creativity and technology came together in the form of a film and a radio degree at Murdoch University in Perth. Always keen to explore and understand the technological boundaries of media, John later achieved a First-Class Honours in Screen Production (with the film, 'Cyron' (2005)) and then a doctorate (PhD) for a thesis titled "An Adaptation of Medium Theory Analysis: YouTube as a Digital Moving-Image Medium". This thesis included the creation and publishing of 29 episodes of 'perthbands.tv' (2008-2010): a Perth-based local original music YouTube channel.
John's moving-image production experience includes creating nationally-distributed music videos for Australian musicians John Butler Trio, Eskimo Jo, The Waifs, and the Scotch of Saint James, as well as writing, producing, directing, editing, and compositing a virtual-set short science-fiction film called Cyron (2005). He has spent time mixing live video projection and been a Video-Jockey at live music events supporting international DJs; produced a localized FM radio station for Southbound Music Festival; live video-switched commercial performances and events; and completed post-production vision for the acclaimed 35-minute indigenous documentary, 'Synergies - Walking Together, Belonging to Country' (2015), directed by well-known West Australian film-maker, Glen Stasiuk.
John won a Best Music Video award for John Butler's 'Pickapart' (2001), been nominated for 4 awards for 'Cyron' (2005) (including Best Director) and been nominated for Best Editing internationally for the experimental short film, 'Date' (2013). 'Date' (2013) has screened at numerous national and international festivals, as well as screened on national broadcast television channel, ABC TV.
His 45 minute, independently produced, documentary, 'OurStory: Six Sisters of the Stolen Generation' (2011), has screened at various significant indigenous cultural events, including Reconciliation Day 2012 and the Wairoa Indigenous Film Festival in New Zealand. It was also screened ten times on Australian public broadcaster, SBS TV.
John is currently (2020) working on indigenous fathering projects in collaboration with UWA researcher, Professor Len Collard, as well as other participatory video production ideas. He has recently completed writing his first feature film script with colleague, Dr Owen Beck, and 'Mister Wick' has since awarded a finalist position in the 2019 Warner Bros., The Black List, and Veerhuis Pictures Australian Script Writing Opportunity.
John has been working as a Screen Production Lecturer and Researcher for Murdoch University in Perth since 2006.
Father of two children, Zoe and Ashling, John is lovingly married to beautiful, talented, and supportive wife, Tabitha.
