How do you imagine a Guillermo del Toro-directed stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio? Think it through. What would the visual style be like? What directions might the plot take? What themes would be emphasised? What would the mood be? Got all of that in your head? Good. You’re almost certainly right. If you’re thinking of a morality tale set during the rise of Italian fascism, in which Pinocchio dies and goes to the underworld, the adult characters are all deeply flawed and miserable, everything is sinister and the Blue Fairy is made out of eyeballs … well done.
This is the most, well, Guillermo del Toro that Guillermo del Toro has been in quite some time: the master fantasist who fundamentally understands the stuff of children’s nightmares, and gets that those are adult nightmares too. A storyteller who knows that simple tales hold complex themes, and a moralist...

Unfortunately, Guillermo Del Toro’s original Gothic romance Crimson Peak didn’t translate to box office gold, netting thirty one million at the domestic box office (it was budgeted at fifty-five million) and receiving criticism for a basic narrative failing to live up to the promise of inventive visuals. Still, one can appreciate Universal’s gambling on Del Toro’s vision and hope the property is considered lucrative enough to continue supporting unique visions from auteurs. Featuring a talented cast (despite the questionable casting of Jessica Chastain), Del Toro’s period suspense thriller collapses under close inspection, but is worth a glance as a piece of glossy strangeness.
Borrowing mercilessly from yellowed clichés of romantically inclined gothic literature, screenwriters Del Toro and Matthew Robins (whose last collaboration was the 1997 mutant insect thriller Mimic) plunder Edgar Allan Poe templates infused with the emotional melodrama oozing eternally from the pages of the...

The Fall of the House of Cushing: Del Toro’s Haunted House Thriller Strangled by Frills
There’s much to admire within the crumbling facades of Guillermo Del Toro’s latest tantalizing film, Crimson Peak. But unlike its haunted familial mansion sinking slowly into the mire of wet red earth, the nonsensical and disappointingly basic narrative is consistent only in its utter transparency. Borrowing mercilessly from yellowed clichés of romantically inclined gothic literature, screenwriters Del Toro and Matthew Robins (whose last collaboration was the 1997 mutant insect thriller Mimic) plunder Edgar Allan Poe templates infused with the emotional melodrama oozing eternally from the pages of the Bronte sisters (while diegetic references to Jane Austen and Mary Shelley aren’t quite as effective in a film brimming with pointed symbolism). An overextended first half teases delectable weirdness to come, but beyond its brooding cinematography and expertly crafted ghostly visuals, Del Toro delivers...

Some quick casting news is coming in for Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak. The Wrap reports that Emma Stone has left the project and taking her place could be Stoker's Mia Wasikowska.
Wasikowska is being eyed to play a young author named Edith Cushing, who discovers that her charming new husband is not who he appears to be. Plot details are unknown as del Toro and Lucinda Coxon work through a rewrite on a script del Toro and Matthew Robins originally penned.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone will be joined by Jessica Chastain in Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak...
With everything new we learn about Guillermo del Toro's planned upcoming horror movie, Crimson Peak, it gets yet more interesting. The film, which del Toro is set to tackle once this summer's Pacific Rim is safely launched into the world, added Benedict Cumberbatch to its cast list last week. That's on top of Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnan, who are both already on board the project.
The latest addition? That'd be Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, who is reportedly in negotiations to co-star in the film.
Crimson Peak is set to shoot next February, and del Toro is reworking the screenplay - which he's had the guts of since he made Pan's Labyrinth - with Lucinda Cox. Matthew Robins originally co-wrote the film with del Toro.

After starring in the Guillermo del Toro produced horror fantasy Mama for director Andrés Muschietti, the Oscar nominated star of Zero Dark Thirty is looking to at another crack at collaborating with the Pacific Rim and Pan's Labyrinth director. Variety has word that Jessica Chastain is in final negotiations to co-star in Crimson Peak, the next horror film that del Toro will begin shooting in February of 2014. Just yesterday Benedict Cumberbatch joined the cast that already includes Emma Stone and Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam, so this is looking to be quite the star-studded affair for Legendary Pictures. More below! Right now, del Toro and Lucina Coxon are rewriting the script which the director first wrote with Matthew Robins. It's been sitting around since after Pan's Labyrinth was completed, and del Toro even looked at other directors for the project. We're glad it finally fell back into his hands and Legendary decided to back it.

Guillermo del Toro has cast Benedict Cumberbatch in his haunted house tale Crimson Peak. Other than the haunted house aspect, not much is known about the plot.
Cumberbatch will join Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam in the horror flick. Given del Toro is directing, I assume Ron Perlman will be added to the cast at some point as well.
The script was written by del Toro and Matthew Robins, but the director is now going through a rewrite with Lucinda Coxin.
Cumberbatch is getting a lot of parts lately, which, if you’ve seen the BBC’s Sherlock, should come as no surprise. He is one talented dude. You can see him next in Star Trek into Darkness.

The British actor has gained quite a fanboy following playing tv's Sherlock, and has a couple of big villain roles coming up that have most of us here on Cbm very excited: John Harrison in Star Trek Into Darkness and the titular Dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. Will be also be playing a baddie in Crimson Peak? At this point we have no idea, as no character details are given. When a guy like Guillermo del Toro has more than a few projects in development, a few of the are inevitably going to fall through the cracks and get stuck. Such is the case with del Toro's new stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio, which the filmmaker had written with Gris Grimly and Matthew Robins, who has worked with the director for years. We've already seen some concept art for the film, and apparently voies were going to be recorded this summer with Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Waits amongst the talents rumored to take part. However, Grimly has a disappointing update for those looking forward to the project. Here's what Grimly said on Twitter in an update that has since been deleted: "Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick." I was really looking forward to seeing Guillermo del Toro's vision of Pinocchio, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. He was previously developing the stop-motion animated film with The Jim Henson Co., and he would have co-directed it with Fantastic Mr. Fox animation-director Mark Gustafson, from a script written by Gris Grimly and Matthew Robins. Tom Waits was also going to provide the voice of Gepetto, which would have been great!
Well, Grimly posted the following update on his Twitter account...

At just 24, Emma Stone has tackled an impressive mix of roles in her short acting career. Emma Stone has done superhero movies, she's done broad comedies and she's done Oscar nominated dramas, and soon she may add a ghost story to her growing film resume. The young actress, who was just in theaters last week palling around with Ryan Gosling in Gangster Squad, is now in talks to play the lead in Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak. First announced last month, the project is said to be inspired by the classic haunted house films, like The Haunting and The Shining, and will both have and subvert tropes of the genre. While a deal has not yet been completed and there aren't any character details available, Variety says that Stone is negotiating to star and that the script - originally penned by del Toro and Matthew Robins - is undergoing a rewrite by the director and British writer Lucinda Coxon. If we were ever in a haunted house, well, we'd want Emma Stone to be there, too.

Meanwhile, 2013 is going to be a pretty big year for both the director and his leading lady. Del Toro will be unveiling his first feature film in five years, the highly anticipated "Pacific Rim," on July 12, while Stone will start principal photography on "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" this spring.

According to Variety, Guillermo del Toro may have found a leading lady to terrify in his new haunted house movie. Apparently Emma Stone - most recently seen in Gangster Squad - is in "early talks" for the role, so it's not a done deal yet by any means.
