Madrid — Greater than fiction. Viewed by an estimated 5 billion, the most watched event in TV history, and the climax of the most popular sport on earth, no achievement compares in epic terms to Argentina’s victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Yet soccer, as Atletico de Madrid manager Diego Simeone famously has it, is played match by match. It is won moment by moment. No doc feature to date perhaps captures the ever evolving drama of Argentina’s campaign – the flux and flow of psychological advantage, the huge emotional stakes, the roll call of protagonists, and the multiple narratives of universal resonance emerging moment by moment – than “Soccer Soul” (“Elijo Creer”), narrated by Ricardo Darín, star of Oscar-winning “The Secret in Their Eyes” and dropped by HBO Max on Jan. 11 in Argentina and the rest of Latin America.
It begins with the defining moment of the whole 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Buenos Aires, May 10 (Ians) Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said he is unperturbed about where Lionel Messi plays next season, adding that his only concern is whether the 35-year-old is happy.
Messi’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires on June 30 and he has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia after being photographed in Riyadh with his family last week, reports Xinhua.
The Argentina captain was subsequently suspended by Psg for making the trip without the club’s knowledge and missing a training session.
“Let him go to where he will feel comfortable with his teammates and the club’s fans,” Scaloni was quoted as saying by Argentina’s media.
“The matter does not affect us as a national team as long as he’s happy when he joins us and we need him to be happy.”

Buenos Aires, March 22 (Ians) Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has called on his players to be ready for a new challenge after their triumphant 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Buenos Aires, Feb 28 (Ians) Lionel Scaloni has extended his contract as Argentina national team manager until 2026, the South American country’s football association said.
The announcement came less than three months after the 44-year-old led Argentina to glory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when his previous agreement expired, reports Xinhua news agency.
“(Afa president) Claudio Tapia and Lionel Scaloni met to finalize the extension of the contract as national team coach until 2026,” read an Afa statement.
Scaloni, a former wing-back who was capped seven times for Argentina, took over as the national team boss in 2018 following the sacking of Jorge Sampaoli.
He oversaw a rapid improvement in the Albiceleste’s fortunes and led them to victory at the 2021 Copa America in Brazil – their first major title in 28 years.

Buenos Aires (Argentina) Feb 4 (Ians) Argentina captain Lionel Messi has left open the possibility of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but says his participation will depend on ‘many things’.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward previously declared the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would mark his last appearance in football’s showpiece event.
But Argentina’s triumphant campaign — in which Messi scored seven goals and won the best player award of the tournament — has prompted him to reconsider the possibility of playing in a sixth World Cup.
Messi will turn 39 during the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“I don’t know, I always said that due to age it seems to me that it will be very difficult to make it to 2026,” the 35-year-old told Argentine sports daily Ole.
“I love playing football, I love what I do and as long as I’m good and feel fit and continue to enjoy it,...

Madrid, Jan 8 (Ians) A goal from Yeremy Pino and a penalty from Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal a 2-1 win at home to Real Madrid in a thrilling La Liga match.
With defender Dani Carvajal injured, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti named a starting lineup without a single Spanish player in a league game for the first time ever.
Villarreal started brightly and could have had two goals in the opening minutes, with Francis Coquelin hitting the post, but somehow the game arrived at the break 0-0.
Pino’s powerful shot put Villarreal ahead early in the second half, but Real Madrid were level just before the hour when the Var awarded them a penalty after the ball brushed defender Juan Foyth’s hand.
Karim Benzema made no mistake from the penalty spot, but three minutes later another controversial handball saw Villarreal awarded a spot kick and this time Moreno sent...

Buenos Aires (Argentina), Dec 27 (Ians) Argentine football chief Claudio Tapia has said that he is confident Lionel Scaloni will continue as national team manager following the Albicelest’s World Cup triumph.
Scaloni’s contract expires on December 31 but the Argentine Football Association (Afa) wants to secure the 44-year-old on another four-year term after he led the South American country to its third World Cup title in Qatar earlier this month.
“I have no doubt that he will continue to be the head coach of the Argentina team,” Afa president Tapia told reporters on Monday, eight days after the Albiceleste’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over France in Lusail.
“We are both men of our word, we shook hands, and we said yes to each other. He is currently travelling but as soon as he comes back we are going to finalize it.”

Doha, Dec 20 (Ians) The 2022 World Cup final will go down in history as one of the greatest ever, as Argentina won 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the scoreline was locked at 3-3 at the end of extra time. And, Gonzalo Montiel will forever be remembered as the player who scored the winning spot kick, with the Sevilla Fc right-back displaying cool confidence to send France captain Hugo Lloris the wrong way and to kickstart the celebrations.
Not only was it a historic penalty, but it was also a brilliantly executed one. The full-back didn’t even look at Lloris and, with the world watching, he focused solely on the ball, dispatching a solid and sure kick to his left.
That made it ten penalties converted from ten penalties attempted in the 25-year-old’s career, after he started taking spot kicks while working under Marcelo Gallardo at River Plate. “We...

Doha (Qatar), Dec 12 (Ians) Argentina’s Rodrigo De Paul and Angel Di Maria have overcome injury concerns and will be available to face Croatia in their World Cup semifinal, Albiceleste manager Lionel Scaloni said on Monday.

Doha, Dec 12 (Ians) The semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will see Croatia take on Argentina and France play Morocco, look as if they will be a triumph of pragmatism over brilliance and emblematic of hard work on the pitch.
Croatia reached the semifinals for the second time in four years after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout against Brazil that left the pre-tournament favorites in tears.
The never-say-die spirit of the Croatians, coupled with the excellence of veteran midfielder Luka Modric and defender Dejan Lovren, saw a fine defensive display and shows that a side that has taken many ties in knockout stages of recent major tournaments to extra time, does not know how to give up, reports Xinhua news agency.

Doha, Dec 10 (Ians) Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his side’s personality after their tense qualification to the semifinals of the World Cup on penalties after the 120-minute play against the Netherlands ended 2-2.
“We have a spirit that means we know how to face every moment. I don’t think we deserved to go to penalties, but the team was able to get through a strange second half,” said Scaloni.
“This team has a will. It has youth and pride and never gives anything up as lost,” he said, reports Xinhua.
“I don’t know how many tests of character we have come through in this world Cup, we lost our first game, we found it hard against Mexico and today, the way the Dutch hit long balls obliged us to defend. We had the spirit to know what we want and that is what this team has,” he added.

Doha, Dec 8 (Ians) Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said Thursday he could not guarantee the availability of midfielders Rodrigo De Paul and Angel Di Maria for his team’s World Cup quarterfinal against the Netherlands.
De Paul is in doubt with a right hamstring strain while Di Maria is recovering from a quadriceps problem that forced him to miss the Albiceleste’s 2-1 victory over Australia in the round of 16, reports Xinhua news agency.
“In principle, De Paul and Di Maria are fine,” Scaloni told a news conference ahead of Friday’s match in Lusail.

Doha, Dec 3 (Ians) Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni revealed on Friday that Angel Di Maria remained doubtful to play their World Cup round of 16 clash with Australia.
“Di Maria had discomfort. We will see the panorama of him tomorrow (Saturday). If he’s fine, he’ll play,” Scaloni said in a press conference without giving further details.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 2 (Ians) The knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup gets underway on Saturday with two ties in the last 16 as the Netherlands face the USA, while Argentina take on Australia.
The tournament moves to a moment where any error can be fatal and where the added drama of extra time and penalties can come into play.
The USA are facing doubt over captain Christian Pulisic with a pelvic injury that he suffered in their 1-0 win against Iran on Tuesday night. The Chelsea forward would be a significant loss to the USA, where he has played in a more central role than for his club.
The Netherlands have Memphis Depay fully fit, while Cody Gakpo goes into the match after scoring in each of the three group matches.

Doha, Nov 22 (Ians) Lionel Messi has downplayed fears about his physical fitness, declaring himself ready for Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia later on Tuesday.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward had raised concerns in the Argentine press after he was seen training separately from the rest of Argentina’s squad last week.
“I feel very good physically, the truth is that I think I’ll enter the tournament in great shape, personally as well as physically,” Messi told a news conference on Monday, reports Xinhua.
“I don’t have any problem, I heard that they said that I trained differently because I suffered a knock … but it’s nothing unusual. The timing (of the World Cup) is different. It’s at the other end of the year and our physical condition is different.
“Normally we have a month to prepare for the World Cup. This time there hasn...

Buenos Aires, Nov 13 (Ians) Lionel Messi said he sees a resemblance between the current Argentina squad and the one that reached the final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The Albiceleste will be bidding for their third World Cup title when this year’s edition gets underway in Qatar on November 20. Argentina will make their debut in the tournament against Saudi Arabia on November 22 and will also meet Mexico and Poland in Group C.
“I feel a lot of similarities between this group and the one at the 2014 World Cup,” Messi told Argentine newspaper Ole. “It is a group that always, whatever the match, plays with the same intensity and concentration and I think that is very important. And we know that we are going to fight for [the title] but we are not thinking that we are going to be champions from the outset as Argentines think.”

Buenos Aires, Nov 12 (Ians) As Roma forward Paulo Dybala has been named in Argentina’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar despite a hamstring tear, the country’s football association has said.
The 28-year-old has not played since sustaining the injury in a 2-1 home win over Lecce in Italy’s Serie A on October 9.
Local media reported on Friday the former Juventus star began light training this week and he will be in a race against time to be fit for Argentina’s first match against Saudi Arabia on November 22. The Albicleste will also face Mexico and Poland in Group C, reports Xinhua.
As expected, Argentina’s wealth of attacking options also include Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi, Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez and Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.
Manager Lionel Scaloni also called up midfielders Leandro Paredes (Juventus) and Rodrigo De Paul (Atletico Madrid) in his 26-man squad.

Buenos Aires, Sep 21 (Ians) Few teams will be as fine-tuned for this year’s FIFA World Cup as Argentina, according to former Albiceleste manager Jorge Sampaoli.
The two-time world champions have gone 32 games without defeat in a three-year run that included last year’s Copa America title — their first major trophy since 1993.
“The national team will enter the tournament with a lot of confidence and in great form,” the Ole newspaper quoted Sampaoli as saying. “It’s the middle of the (European) season but few teams will be in the same (physical) state as Argentina.”
Sampaoli, who was Argentina’s manager at the 2018 World Cup in Russia — when they were eliminated by eventual champions France in the last 16 — stopped short of calling Lionel Scaloni’s men tournament favourites, reports Xinhua.
“I don’t dare to say who can be champions,” he said. “Argentina are in good shape, with a level...

Buenos Aires, March 3 (Ians) Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said that he is looking forward to seeing a fit and happy Lionel Messi in the Albiceleste's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil next month.
Messi began the current season slowly for Barcelona after a failed attempt to force a transfer last August. However, the 33-year-old has recaptured his best form in recent weeks and he now has 24 goals and nine assists in 32 matches across all competitions in 2020-21, Xinhua news agency reported.
"Messi is fine and when he is with us he is even better," Scaloni told reporters on Tuesday.
"Let's hope he continues in this way."
While Messi appears to be in peak physical condition, the same cannot be said of several of his Albiceleste teammates.
Among those in danger of missing the upcoming qualifiers are Tottenham playmaker Giovani Lo Celso, Stuttgart forward Nicolas Gonzalez, and Sevilla pair Lucas Ocampos and Marcos Acuna.
