Kevin Macdonald’s finely balanced portrait of the disgraced Dior designer, on Mubi from Friday, is the newest arrival on a catwalk of fashion industry movies, from Funny Face to Zoolander
For those who bleat on about the iniquities of supposed “cancel culture”, the career of British fashion designer John Galliano is a useful counterpoint. Sacked in 2011 as the creative director of Christian Dior after an appalling incident of antisemitic abuse on his part, he spent two years in the wilderness before being hired by Oscar de la Renta and subsequently Maison Margiela, where he has been for a decade. A-listers still wear his gowns on red carpets. Life goes on. Kevin Macdonald’s documentary High & Low: John Galliano (streaming on Mubi from 26 April) chronicles Galliano’s rise and fall and rise with a more distanced, critical eye than you may expect from a film co-produced by Vogue publisher Condé Nast.

Jennifer Lawrence might not be nominated for the 2024 Oscars, but it couldn’t stop the actress from being dressed to the nines. She opted for attire from Dior — a brand she’s been associated with for a long time.

She walked the red carpet wearing another stunning couture gown from the French fashion house. This time, it was a strapless black gown adorned with white polka dots all over.
Although the dress may have seemed simple, it actually required a lot of preparation time. Despite its uncomplicated appearance, designing and creating it took a significant effort, totaling 1500 hours.

Jennifer Lawrence said winning the Best Actress Academy Award in 2013 for portraying a troubled young widow, Tiffany Maxwell in the comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook didn’t make her happy for long.
Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany Maxwell in a still from Silver Linings Playbook
With this award, she became the second-youngest winner in the category at just the age of 22. But for Lawrence, it was more like a quick burst of joy followed by the usual chaos of life.
As she strutted towards the stage to grab her trophy and say her thanks, she pulled off an epic stair-fumble in front of the A-list crowd and those watching on TV. J.Law has confessed that she was sensitive about the incident for a long time.

The fashion shows that just ended in Italy — those of Pitti Uomo in Florence and those of the Milan Fashion Week, dedicated to fall/winter 2024 menswear collections — painted a decidedly critical picture of the fashion scene, raising many questions and providing some very interesting answers.
For the Italian luxury sector, 2023 was a year that began well and ended very badly, with a decline of 7.2 percent compared to the previous year and forecasts for 2024 that are not exactly encouraging. The causes are many and uncontrollable: the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the Chinese real estate bubble, and finally the rise of inflation in Italy that makes exports, especially those to the American market, less competitive. After the explosive prior year of 2022, everyone’s expectations were considerably lowered, and this changed everything in terms of product.

Trendsetters were called crazy when they first started wearing chunky sneakers, but, a few years later, the kicks are still everywhere. Also called “dad shoes” or “ugly sneakers,” chunky, oversized sneakers have been around since sneakers were first released, but the look really took off around 2018 and shosw no sign of slowing down. Now, the best chunky sneakers are more wearable (and more abundant) than ever.

In an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show airing Tuesday, the Big Little Lies star opened up about seeing Kanye wear a Raf Simons shirt with her face on it—and, most importantly, how his stamp of approval totally impressed her kids, Ellery, 18, and Jaya, 14. (She shares the teens with ex-husband Ben Harper.) "This is thanks to the amazing designer Raf Simons who paid homage to David Lynch and his work," she told host Ellen DeGeneres. "But what he didn't know is he actually gave me a tiny bit of cred in my house of teenagers and I'm really...

If things had gone differently, the red-carpet mileage of awards season would still be splashed with the showy, flowy designs of Roy Halston Frowick: better known simply by his middle name, the Midwest-raised fashion designer belatedly put American couture on the map in the 1970s. After his luxury brand expanded to ubiquitous levels in just a few years, riding a wave of celebrity disco culture, a series of ill-advised business decisions and cruel corporate sabotage combined to demolish it even more suddenly, making Halston a has-been by the time of his AIDS-related death in 1990. It’s a true fashion tragedy that docmaker Frédéric Tcheng unpicks with devotion and compelling attention to detail in his plainly titled “Halston,” though the film errs by treating its subject’s demise as more of a mystery than it really was.

It has orange lining, which makes it pop when laid flat (as it was on the website) and green trims. ★★★☆☆ Intimacy infuses director Frédéric Tcheng's Dior and I (2014). His second film at the helm situates itself in the centre of a veritable institution in the world of fashion: the haute couture house of Christian Dior. In the film, Dior is not only a name - it's a living iconography. Dior and I unravels quite sumptuously, if not quietly, to reveal a brand that may be built on a reputation but thrives on the visions and dedication of the people who work within it. There are no mere cogs here; the wheel of Dior rolls through its quotidian activities under the firm guidance of its newest creative director, Raf Simons - the focus of the film - whose modern inclinations seek to push the Dior brand into fresh territory.

There’s a new theater in town! When I first heard that my favorite St. Louis movie house, The Hi-Pointe, was adding a second screen, I was concerned that they were going to cut their magnificent 450-seat movie palace in half to accommodate a second screen to stay competitive with the multiplexes. The Hi-Pointe, opened in 1922, is the oldest operating theater in the Missouri portion of the St. Louis area and the only single screener. Thankfully, my fears were put to rest when I found out that The Hi-Pointe Backlot, their new satellite theater, is located on the second floor of a building behind the main Hi-Pointe (1005 McCausland Ave.in St. Louis) and that the big theater still has all of its seats. This is exciting! The Hi-Pointe Backlot, which seats 50, opens this Friday, May 1st.

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. You know all those red carpet gala events where celebrities wear clothes that cost more than the average mortgage, and entertainment reporters ask them “...and who are you wearing!?” Other than those among us who are specifically interested in the world of fashion, it's the question that signals our natural instincts to switch off and think of some snide remark aimed at the shallow world of glitzy fame. Well, Frederic Tcheng's fashion documentary, “Dior And I,” may just make you think twice the next time you hear that question. As an intimate portrayal of the high-strung fashion climate in one of the biggest fashion houses in the world, "Dior And I" is a story of the people behind the dresses. Most vividly, though, it's the story of a man's creative freedom pressured by the weight of the gorilla on his shoulders.

The world of haute couture can often seem like a whole different realm; impenetrable to the regular person, and mysterious to those on the outside. Read More: 'Dior And I' Brings The World Of Haute Couture Down To Earth The movie follows designer Raf Simons as he puts together his first line for Dior in his role as Artistic Director. As you'll see in this clip, the amount of work that goes into just one dress pays off the moment it all comes together into a stunning original piece. "Dior And I" — which we said in our review brings "this exclusive world down to earth, knitting the viewer with its needles and threads and making a...

Dior And I The Orchard Reviewed by: Harvey Karten for Shockya. Databased on Rotten Tomatoes. Grade: B Director: Frédéric Tcheng Cast: Raf Simons, Pieter Mulier Screened at: Dolby88, NYC, 3/26/15 Opens: April 10, 2015 The annual Academy awards celebrations are arguably the dullest shows on TV, given the insipid thank-you speeches that name that the audience knows or cares to know. That means there’s only one reason that people watch, and that’s to look at the clothing that the stars are wearing. Since men don only the traditional tux and bow tie, only the women are worth admiring for their taste in threads. And that’s where Christian Dior comes in. [ Read More ]

Well, Frederic Tcheng's fashion documentary “Dior And I” may just make you think twice the next time you hear that question. As an intimate portrayal of the high-strung fashion climate in one of the biggest fashion houses in the world, "Dior And I" is a story of the people behind the dresses. Most vividly though, it's the story of a man's creative freedom pressured by the weight of the gorilla on his shoulders. The man is Raf Simons, the gorilla is Christian Dior,...

A brand can be a powerful thing. Frederic Tcheng, director of Dior and I, is absolutely obsessed. This documentary about the famous couture house is peppered with shots of the name itself, hanging above the doorway of a shop or pasted onto an advertisement. Sometimes the effect is intimidation, other times adoration, but it is always at least brushing up against fetishization. Never quite slipping into insistence or redundancy, this leitmotif reminds of the power and dignity of the house, legendary since Christian Dior opened its doors in 1947. This makes for a quite a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Raf Simons, the newest creative director of Dior and the ostensible subject of the film. He started work in April 0f 2012 and that’s where Tcheng begins, leading with the moment when the new boss is introduced to the staff. Dior and I charts Simons’s first collection from start to finish, from...

The latest title to join the fashion film genre is Dior and I, the documentary that enters the House of Christian Dior as the brand's new artistic director Raf Simons created his first collection for the fall/winter 2013 season. After co-producing 2008's Valentino: The Last Emperor and directing 2011's Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, filmmaker Frederic Tcheng found himself focusing not only focusing on Simons, seamstresses and show attendees, but also Christian Dior himself. In part 1 of our conversation, the director spoke about developing musical themes for Christian Dior and Simons with Ha-yang Kim and the genesis of the project through House of Dior's Olivier Bialobos and Omar Berrada's introduction of Marina Warner's book Phantasmagoria.

Dior And I: "It has to be a little mysterious and enigmatic."
Frédéric Tcheng, co-producer and co-editor of the fashion documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor and co-director of Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel, brings his beautifully evocative Dior And I (Dior Et Moi) to the Tribeca Film Festival where it will have its World Premiere. The haute couture ateliers of the House of Dior in Paris are haunted by the spirit of the founder, Christian Dior, who, in 1947, revolutionised the world of fashion with the "New Look". Enter Raf Simons, the Belgian designer, often mis-labeled "minimalist" who came from furniture design, to menswear, to Jil Sander.
Anne-Katrin Titze: Cinema is always about haunting, about the past coming back. In your film especially, you have the past haunting the present on many levels in Dior and I.
55 years later, Christian Dior's portraits still loom in every corridor.

Body Art
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Writers: Luca Guadagnino, Dom Delillo
Producer: Alfama Films
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Sigourney Weaver, Denis Levant, David Cronenberg
News on this project broke in early 2013 when Guadagnino announced that Raf Simons would be designing the wardrobe for Huppert and Weaver in this adaptation of the Dom Delillo novel “The Body Artist.” Additionally, it was announced that Lavant and Cronenberg were also attached to star. Filming was due to begin in Portugal in summer 2013 (and Weaver even left her Broadway play Vanya & Sonya & Masha & Spike early), but, for reasons unknown, that never happened. Guadagnino has been tight lipped as to why and stated that the delay was temporary, and then, just this past month, it was announced he would be adapting The Reliable Wife in the fall. While it’s been hinted that he will film something else first, nothing has been...

It seems David Cronenberg hasn’t had enough of Don DeLillo, with Variety reporting that the director is set to go in front of the camera in Luca Guadgnino’s adaptation of DeLillo’s 2001 novella, The Body Artist. Apparently retitled as Body Art, the exciting pairing of Isabelle Huppert and Sigourney Weaver, first announced by the Hollywood Reporter last week, really peaked our interest. Oh, and for some extra special zaniness, Denis Lavant is along for the ride as well. Paolo Branco of Alfama Films, (the company also behind Cosmopolis), will also be the production-distribution company behind this project. And Raf Simons, the artistic director of Dior will be designing costumes for Weaver and Huppert. Guadagnino has a few projects it seems he’s currently working, including the widely reported James Ellroy adaptation The Big Nowhere, but it seems Body Art is set to film this summer, so this may be next in his queue.
