It seems Universal’s fledging Dark Universe is at risk of flatlining.
Sources close to The Hollywood Reporter claim Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discovery) and Chris Morgan are no longer involved in the wildly ambitious franchise, which arguably got off on the wrong foot after The Mummy was torn to shreds by critics earlier this year.
Despite a global haul in excess of $400 million, the Tom Cruise-fronted epic wound up costing Universal close to $95 million, and it didn’t take long before the Powers That Be pumped the brakes on the Dark Universe to reassess the situation. Indeed, that soul-searching led to Bride of Frankenstein being unceremoniously yanked from Universal’s release slate, at which point the horror spinoff also lost Angelina Jolie. Writer-director Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) is still in the process of hashing out a script, though, according to THR’s sources.

The Barden Bellas will be back this May to sing their hearts out for Pitch Perfect 2. If the box office receipts of the 2012 outing proved anything, it’s that comedy can still appeal to a large audience And be all kinds of weird to boot. While we’ve a month to go until verdicts are in on the sequel, the critical and audience response isn’t necessarily a factor for Pitch Perfect 3. In fact, earlier this year Paramount co-president Peter Cramer said “We’re definitely starting to think about it but we don’t know specifically what it would be just yet.”
Now, thanks to a Tweet from La Times’ Film Reporter Amy Kaufman, we know one star who’s lining up for a third aca-outing:
News: Rebel Wilson just told me there will be a 3rd @PitchPerfect and she recently signed on to be in it! (She doesn’t know abt Kendrick.

Elizabeth Banks and hubby Max Handelman’s Brownstone Productions have signed a two-year, first-look with Universal, the studio said today. And the timing is pretty good as Banks’ directorial debut and Universal-released Pitch Perfect 2 hits the big screen on May 15, 2015.
“Universal has keenly understood the unique Pitch Perfect brand, and we are excited to now extend that brand to projects beyond the Pitch franchise,” said Banks and Handelman in a statement Thursday after the announcement by Universal co-presidents of production Peter Cramer and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum. “The studio has been a phenomenal creative partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Jeff Shell, Donna Langley, Jimmy Horowitz, Peter Cramer, Jeff Kirschenbaum and the whole Universal team.”
