Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Rebecca Hall was one of the buzziest names to feature on the BBC’s recent 12-strong drama slate and the BAFTA winner can now be seen in first look images playing a teacher in Element Pictures’ The Listeners.
Adapted by the novel’s author Jordan Tannahill, Hall’s character Claire is tormented by a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear. This seemingly innocuous noise gradually upsets the balance of her life, increasing tension between herself and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Ashley. But despite multiple doctors, no obvious source or medical cause can be found.
Scroll down for more pics, including another of Hall and one of Ollie West (Hamnet), who plays student Kyle and can also hear the sound.
Also starring in the series, which was filmed in Greater Manchester, are Prasanna Puwanarajah, Amr Waked (Ramy), Gayle Rankin, Mia Tharia (Phoenix Rise), Franc Ashman, Samuel Edward Cook, Karen Henthorn, Lucy Sheen (Ping Pong) and Ian Mercer.
Deadline revealed the show’s development last March and Poor Things producer Element is making it with Janicza Bravo – whose past credits include Zola, Mrs America and Them – directing. Hall is also starring in James L. Brooks’ next movie Ella McCay and Tessa Thompson’s similarly-named helpline drama The Listener. Fremantle is distributing The Listeners.
Rebecca Dundon, SVP Scripted Content, International at Fremantle said: “The Listeners is a thriller like no other that will surprise, provoke and challenge the status quo.”

Detective Inspector Lou Slack (Leila Farzad) is a smart, hard-drinking, cigarette-smoking, highly effective police officer in the West Yorkshire force. She’s also a bent copper. But a bent copper who we desperately want to believe is also a “nice” bent copper. Redemption, after all, usually makes for great drama. And a dash of corruption in the lead character in a police show makes an intriguing change. Unlike in Line of Duty, here the high-ranking corrupt police officer is the investigator, not the investigated, the antihero who is also the hero. And unlike Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley – a hard act to follow – she’s wealthy and content with her life, complicated and compromised as it is. We want to know what Lou did that got her so entangled with the wrong side, and how she’s going to survive it as her web of deceit goes wrong. It’s...

BAFTA-nominated I Hate Suzie star Leila Farzad and Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan are to lead BBC One’s Better, the latest drama from prolific Chernobyl producer Sister.
Farzad, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role in Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble’s dramedy, will play Di Lou Slack, a quick-witted policewoman whose success lies on a foundation of deceit and corruption.
Buchan, who is also penning Sister drama Passenger for ITV, plays Col McHugh, a charming businessman and property developer who heads a citywide drug trafficking gang.
The show from Humans scribes Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent tells of the pair’s bond set in a world where they have created their own version of “right” and “wrong.”
Farzad called it a “a brilliant fresh take on the morality tale,” adding: “I am excited to have the opportunity to play Lou Slack, the vehicle through which we explore the multivalent layers of good and bad.

Review Tom French 26 Sep 2013 - 22:00
Peaky Blinders just gets better and better. Here's Tom's review of episode three...
This review contains spoilers.
If the first episode of Peaky Blinders was a swaggering statement of intent, and the second episode a more introspective, character-driven piece, then this third episode is a wonderful blend of the two that continues the momentum created in those first two episodes.
One of the most satisfying things about Peaky Blinders so far is the female roles. From the adverts being aired before transmission, you could be mistaken for thinking this is a male-dominated drama, with peripheral female characters only providing romantic interest, or acting as a damsel in distress. Instead, it has provided intelligent, powerful roles for women.
Large parts of last week’s episode of Peaky Blinders dealt with the matriarchal Polly, played by Helen McCrory. Here the focus here shifts slightly, with Grace,...
