The Grateful Dead have broken the record for most Top 40 albums in history thanks to the latest release from their live back-catalog series, Dave’s Picks Vol. 49, which debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 this week.
Released on January 26th, 2024, Dave’s Picks Vol. 49 consists of two complete shows that the Dead played at Stanford University in April 1985. Now, it’s become the 59th album the band has placed on the Top 40, beating the previous record-holders: Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, who were each tied with the Dead for 58 top-charting albums.
The Dead only earned that “tied with” status themselves this past fall, with the release of the previous entry in the 13-year-old Dave’s Picks series, Dave’s Picks Vol. 48, which peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard 200. Now, with the release of Vol. 49, 41 of the Dave’s Picks titles — all curated by Grateful Dead legacy manager and audio archivist,...

Several albums will turn 50 years old this fall, from Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to the Who’s Quadrophenia. That also includes the Grateful Dead’s Wake of the Flood, which will be expanded for its anniversary on Sept. 29.
Released in October 1973, Wake of the Flood marked an album of change for the Dead. It was their first record without Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who died that spring, and drummer Mickey Hart, who temporarily parted ways with the band. It was also the debut of their new label, Grateful Dead Records.

On that late-winter-1970 day at Pacific High recording studio in San Francisco, Jerry Garcia wasn’t happy with what he was hearing. The Grateful Dead were trying to finish “New Speedway Boogie,” a song they’d played live only three times, and they were having trouble finding a groove.
“Keep it nice and fucking together, you fuckers,” Garcia said semi-jokingly as they took another pass at it. They started again, but the tempo still wasn’t locking in. “It’s faltering,” he said, sounding more exasperated than before. “It’s weird,...

Grateful Dead isn’t just a band. It is a social phenomenon. But as a band, it had one major superpower, the greatest Pa system in the world. It is only fitting Z2 Comics would want to include them in their roster of music-affiliated graphic novels. Their upcoming Grateful Dead Origins chronicles the history of jamband culture.
“Jerry Garcia was an avid comic book enthusiast so it is incredibly fitting to have the Grateful Dead’s origin story told in graphic novel form,” Rhino Entertainment President Mark Pinkus, said in a statement. “Z2’s passion for the band’s music and mythology make them the perfect partner to bring the story to life. It has been inspiring to watch the novel’s artwork evolve over the last year and I’m excited that Dead Heads now get to have a preview.”

In fact, during last night’s Super Bowl, Fox played clips of Phish’s “Character Zero” and “Free,” as well as the Grateful Dead classic “Bertha,” which was a slam dunk nod to the San Francisco 49ers. The ninth installment of the “Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies” will be seen in theaters around the world after Trafalgar Releasing signed on as the distribution partner for the annual event.
Rhino Entertainment, part of Warner Music Group, oversees Grateful Dead properties. Trafalgar replaces Fathom as its partner on the Grateful Dead event, which sees a concert from the iconic band and related footage shown in theaters for one night only each year. It has become a major draw for the group’s fans, known as Dead Heads.
The Meet-Up has traditionally run in the U.S. and there has been an attempt to launch it in the U.K., but on a different date from the U.S. The 2019 plans mark the first time it will play internationally and on the same day. Trafalgar is doing deals now and the film will play in Europe, North America, and Australasia.

Finally, a beer for deadheads. Legendary rock band Grateful Dead is partnering with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery to create a custom brew they've dubbed "American Beauty."
American Beauty will be a strong pale ale with all-American hops and barley, but the band and brewery are asking fans to help out by naming a final, special ingredient with a Grateful Dead-inspired story behind it.
In a release, Grateful Dead's legacy manager, David Lemieux, explained the band's reasoning for launching a beer:
"We've looked for a long while for the perfect brewery to team up with for a Grateful Dead-inspired brew, and feel we've finally found the right fit. Aside from Dogfish's history with music-themed brews, we love their beer, and think it's the best around. Plus, these are really good people and are the type of folks we want to work with."

Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.
"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)
Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.
"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)
Speaking of the Strokes...I hear more than a hint of their aggro-guitar pop rock in this very fine track from former Wisconsinite/current New Yorker Alex Schaaf. His newly...
