James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name is the basis for Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks‘ “Shōgun,” and it makes for exquisite television. Set at the end of the 16th century in Japan, the FX limited series follows several factions in the five Regents all vying for control and power. Intricate world-building and political machinations combine to make “Shōgun” the next “Game of Thrones.” What the two shows also have in common is a collection of superb performances from their extensive casts. Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis lead the way in the show’s leading performances but several supporting players could also be up for an Emmy nomination, including Takehiro Hira.
Hira plays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant who has now become a powerful bushō (a warlord). Kazunari takes charge of one of the five Regents and is the main rival of Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

Rhea Seehorn may not have won the Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series for her Better Call Saul role at the 2023 Emmys, but she’s already teasing a reunion with Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the Emmys red carpet, the actress remained coy on what the series and role was, but shared some more about the role that Gilligan wrote specifically for her.
“We’re never allowed to say anything! He’s already released that it has a sci-fi element; more psychological than full space,” Seehorn told THR. “And he wrote it for me — which is hard to say without crying. And we will shoot in Albuquerque, with a lot of the same crew.”

In Jennifer Coolidge’s Variety Actors on Actors conversation with Jeremy Allen White, she proposes that Tanya return to “The White Lotus” as a seagull, so she can poke out the eyes of her evil husband Greg (Jon Gries). Haley Lu Richardson, who played Tanya’s assistant, Portia, weighs in on killing off Greg during this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.
“Jon and I worked together in the first movie I ever did — when I was 17 — called ‘The Last Survivors,’” she recalls, adding, “I was the hero and he was the villain. I killed him at the end of the movie with a samurai sword.”
She says she’d like to re-create that moment in Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” which takes place in Thailand. “Portia is somewhere in Asia with a samurai sword and kills Greg,” she says, laughing.

Unlike its sister categories, Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series has just five slots to fill. That means a competitive race that always leaves some worthy programs on the outside looking in. The good news for potential contenders is that “The White Lotus” has graduated to Drama Series, and the category is the most wide-open it’s been in years.

We're back at the Hollywood ballot box, folks. Awards season is back upon us, and we're starting off strong with some major contenders for the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards Awards. "The White Lotus" star Haley Lu Richardson and "Emily in Paris" star Ashley Park announced the nominations via livestream early on January 11. The ceremony will be next month on February 26 and will be accessible for viewing via YouTube and Netflix. SAG used to have an air deal with TBS and TNT — which is probably where you remember watching the SAGs if you've been a viewer in the past — but that deal expired last year.
As for the slate of film nominees, a lot of the patterns we've seen so far are continuing. Brandon Fraser is getting praise for his emotional turn in "The Whale," and Cate Blanchett is getting her flowers for her fierce performance in "Tár." But something cool...

Since The White Lotus wrapped up its second season on Sunday (11 December), fans have been sharing their many feelings about the episode on social media.
From heartbreak about who died in the last moments, to theories about the paternity of some characters’ children, viewers have found plenty to discuss and debate.
One topic that has taken over much of the conversation concerns Meghann Fahy, who plays Daphne – the wife of tech entrepreneur Cameron (Theo James), holidaying with their married couple friends Harper and Ethan (Aubrey Plaza and Will Sharpe).
Throughout the season, Daphne became a much-cherished character for her sunny disposition and her lack of worries over the issues in her marriage.
However, a scene in the finale episode secured Daphne as many people’s favourite part of the programme and gained Fahy many compliments for her acting skills.

The White Lotus season two reached its shocking conclusion with Monday (12 December) night’s final episode.
The major reveal was, of course, the identity of the dead body teased in episode one. But the end of the series was marked by a number of startling revelations along the way.
Warning: spoilers for The White Lotus season two finale follow!
One such revelation came in episode five, when Harper (Aubrey Plaza) suggests to Daphne (Meghann Fahy) that Cameron (Theo James) may have been unfaithful during their night away from the hotel.
“I’m sure whatever happened wasn’t a big deal. And, if anything ever happened, you do what you have to do to make yourself feel better about it,” Daphne responds.
She continues: “I have this trainer in the city, Lawrence. He’s so handsome, he has this blonde hair and these, like, big blue eyes. He’s really funny,...

All the characters in the second season of "The White Lotus" are pretty despicable in their own way, but at least one of them seems to have pure intentions. The most well-meaning character is probably Albie, an Italian-American teenager played by Adam Dimarco. Albie is visiting Sicily with his father and grandfather to reconnect with their family's heritage. His father's infidelity has alienated him from his daughter and mother, but Albie attends the trip regardless and tries to keep the peace in his troubled family. Seeing the way that his father treated his mother has made Albie determined to be different. "I refuse to have a bad relationship with women," he tells Portia in episode 2.
For the most part, Albie does treat women with respect. Since he is so repelled by his father and grandfather's attitudes towards women, he does run the risk of being blind to his own misogynistic behavior.

The fifth episode of "The White Lotus" season two, which aired Nov. 27, dropped a major mystery into the center of the marriage of Daphne (Meghann Fahy) and Cameron (Theo James). In the episode, Harper (Aubrey Plaza) is furious with Ethan (Will Sharpe) because he lied to her about what he and Cameron got up to while the two women took a trip to Noto. Ethan only fesses up when Harper finds a condom in their room, and he says that only Cameron slept with the sex workers, not him; he just did molly with them.
All throughout episode five, Harper drops hints in front of Daphne that Ethan and Cameron did something wrong. When she finally gets Daphne alone outside after dinner, she tells her, "I think something happened when we were in Noto." Daphne is confused. Harper doesn't specify what she means with words but with a look. And...

The Emmy 2022 nominations have been announced.
This year’s Emmys, awarding the best in television, will take place on Monday 12 September at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and the race is wide open considering typical nominees, including The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale, are not eligible.
The reasoning for this is due to a new eligibility period meaning shows had to air their most recent seasons between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022.

“For a little while I had ‘Dopesick’ here,” says Gold Derby Editor Denton Davidson about his Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series. “But I recently switched to ‘The White Lotus,’ which is the front-runner. It did so well at Creative Arts last weekend. I think that shows that it has some serious strength … But I do think ‘Dopesick’ is in there” as a strong potential challenger. Watch Davidson slug it out with fellow Editors Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery above.
Before the Emmy nominations were announced, “Dopesick” was actually the front-runner to win Best Limited Series. But that quickly changed when the nominations were unveiled on July 12. “Dopesick” received an impressive 14 bids, but “The White Lotus” exploded our expectations by receiving 20, including eight of the 14 available slots in the supporting acting categories. Now “White Lotus” is the heavy favorite according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.

TV shows in the running for awards this year include Better Call Saul, Succession and Squid Game in the drama categories, and Abbott Elementary, Hacks and Ted Lasso in the comedy categories.
Find the full list of Emmy 2022 nominations below.

As I said before, when reviewing films like the Cambodian “Jailbreak” and the Indonesian Headshot, the centre of the martial arts movies have shifted a bit to the west, with a number of masterpieces of the genre being released during the last decade by countries outside of Hk. Thai “Broken Sword Hero” is another sample of this tendency.
“Broken Sword Hero” screened as part of the Asian selection at Fantasia International Film Festival
Joi is the son of a poor man, who frequently has trouble with the governor’s son and his lackeys, who bully him every chance they get. To his father’s disdain, Joi usually retaliates, bringing him in a very difficult position. The situation becomes even worse after Joi trains on his own, since his father does not allow him to learn Mu Thai, and eventually injures the son of the governor. Having no alternate, Joi is forced to leave the town.

While I'll never understand the failure of Born To Fight star Dan Chupong to really catch on as a martial arts leading man - I've always found him enormously charismatic myself - it would appear that those awaiting the rise of a new fight hero in Thailand may have their man with the arrivial of real life muay thai fighter Buakaw Banchamek in the lead of upcoming historical epic Legend Of The Broken Sword Warrior. The latest from Bang Rajan actor Bin Bunluerit, Broken Sword stars Banchamek as Thongdee - a real life military leader who rose up from the streets via the fighting ring to become a hero to his people. Historical accuracy? I have no idea how much of that there is but...

American distributor Well Go USA are usually pretty good at not tinkering with their titles names, so it’s a little surprising that the latest title (director Nopporn Watin’s martial arts action ‘Yamada: The Samurai of Ayothaya’) is heading for the light of day Stateside under the less than original Muay Thai Warrior. Still, considering it’s a great action flick - and their track record to date - we guess we can forgive them this one transgression. Based on actual events from the 17th century's Ayutthaya period, Muay Thai Warrior combines lush visuals with a cast of Olympic athletes to provide viewers some of the most stunning and realistic Muay Thai techniques ever filmed for the big screen. The cast includes Seigi Ozeki (The Odd Couple), Sorapong Chatree (Bko: Bangkok Knockout, Ong Bak 2 & 3), Winai Kraibutr (Bangkok Revenge), and newcomers Kanokkorn Jaicheun, Thanawut Ketsaro and Buakhao Paw Pramuk.
