'American Idol' Star Lovey James Covers 'Fight Song,' Reveals How She Bounced Back After Elimination
In the immortal words of Season 1 "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson, "what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger." That could not hold truer for 17-year-old Lovey James, a former contestant on the very same singing competition that led to Clarkson’s big break in 2002. Lovey made it to the Top 24 on Season 14, but was eliminated when the judges cut the number of female contestants from 12 to just eight. "[Being on American Idol] took a lot from me emotionally and physically," Lovey tells toofab’s Bernie Zilio. "When I got eliminated, I just thought that it was the end of the world." Lovey says her cover of Rachel Platten’s "Fight Song," released last week, serves as a means of catharsis for the young singer. In the video below, Lovey shuffles through cue cards with hand-written messages on them. She addresses her fans, her haters and what it’s like to overcome obstacles. "[The video] got...

I could tell you that American Idol giveth and American Idol taketh away, but then I’d have to immediately link to a Gif of Kathy Bates in American Horror Story: Coven screaming “Liiiiiiiiiiiiies.” (Go ‘head, click it — you can thank me down in the comments.)

They’re singing oldies, but will they be goodies?
American Idol‘s Season 14 semifinalists are gearing up for a second week of performances from Detroit — tonight and Thursday (8/7c on Fox) — and TVLine’s got the exclusive scoop on their Motown-themed song choices.
We’ve got the entire 24-track set list — but while all of last week’s performers prepped tunes and received some mentoring from living legend Aretha Franklin, only 16 of ‘em will take the stage.

Like a flatline that finally goes “bloop,” American Idol‘s Top 12 Girls telecast sprang to life just when I was about to give up, start folding laundry and write an intro to this recap along the lines of “Season 14 officially belongs to the dudes.”
Hail Sarina-Joi! Hail Jax! Hail Tyanna! (And medium tip-a-hat to Maddie!)
Also: Why do the show’s producers insist on front-loading the telecast with weak links — thereby encouraging viewers to check their DVRs and determine whether they merely dreamed that CBS had launched NCIS: Bangor.

Ok. Maybe Wednesday night's horribly paced performance night for the Top 12 Boys took me a bit by surprise. Perhaps knowing what's coming for Thursday (February 26) night's Top 12 Girls performances will make it a bit easier to stomach. Or maybe not. 8:01 p.m. Et. "Let's get ready to party," Ryan Seacrest says aggressively. Singer: Lovey James Song: "Love Runs Out" My Take: The song starts too low and Lovey can't get her breath at all. As it gradually moves up, Lovey's at least in range, but she also become shout-y and perhaps too excited or emotional. There are good moments in the second half, but also bad moments when Lovey's trying to be heard over the band and failing. There's energy here, but I'm sure I'll have forgotten this performance in 55 minutes. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr Say: J-Lo thought it was awesome. Harry thought it was good.

Half the field for the American Idol Top 24 is set after the first part of the brand new Showcase round, with seven females and five males making the grade. We also saw seven singers get the ax, meaning there are 29 singers left to compete for the other 12 spots.
Already preparing to sing for America's votes are Michael Simeon, Adam Ezegelian, Rayvon Owen, Clark Beckham and Daniel Seavey on the guys' side and Loren Lott, Lovey James, Adanna Duru, Tyanna Jones, Maddie Walker, Shannon Berthiaume and Jax for the girls.

And now for something completely different. Slightly different? For the first time, "American Idol" is doing a Showcase Round, featuring solo performances from the Top 48. How will the performances be laid out? How will the judges make decisions based on the performances? How many performances are we actually going to see over the next two nights? Click through and follow my recap of Wednesday's (February 18) show as we find out the answers together... 8:00 p.m. Et. "One last show will seal their fate," Ryan Seacrest warns us, while also saying that we're getting eliminations tonight and Final Judgement. Yup. I'm already confused. 8:01 p.m. The contestants arrive at House of Blues, where they'll perform for the judges and a live audience. Only 12 Guys and 12 Girls will advance to the live showcase. Then contestants will walk the Not-Really-Green Mile. Presumably not immediately. But that's what it'll look like to us.

For American Idol addicts, the Top 24 announcement episode is akin to being a kid on Christmas morning.
Over the last six weeks, we’ve flipped through our J.C. Penney and Sears catalogs — hey, I grew up in the ’70s; that was as close to perusing the Internet as it got! — and picked out what we wanted in our voting rounds: “Ooooh, I gotta have one Sarina-Joi Crowe, a Clark Beckham and definitely the Savion Wright that Santa accidentally left in his workshop last year!”

After spinning wheels with two straight Group Round episodes in which almost nothing happened, "American Idol" may start making some tough cuts tonight. Fox is promising that we're gonna get down to the Top 48 tonight, which still leaves many cuts to come, but at least things will begin to take shape for the season. Follow along as we get to trimming... 8:01 p.m. Et. "It's A-Game or It's Plan-b," says tonight's pre-credits tease. 8:01 p.m. It's morning on the last day of Hollywood Round and the contestants are pouring into Fords, except that then they're disembarking from buses. Slick product plug, "Idol." The judges are prepared to cut half of the remaining contestants after Solo Round. 8:02 p.m. Up first? Affected Actress Lauren Lott, whose grandmother is in the crowd. Lauren does a decent, but emotion-free cover of "Skyfall." I really don't think anybody's going to vote for Lauren,...

“Can anybody find me somebody to love?”
I posed one of Queen’s most plaintive lyrics for most of Wednesday’s American Idol “Group Rounds” telecast — and unfortunately, only a handful of contestants answered the call. There were forgotten lyrics, cacophonous harmonies, a few instances of face-down-on-the-carpet exhaustion and a smattering of “I didn’t come here to make friends” squawking. But “Holy crap, I want to know that contestant’s 877-number so I can start voting for him/her right this second!” vocals were in short supply.

When last we left "American Idol," they'd cut a bunch of people from Hollywood Week, albeit nobody we'd been made to care about in the slightest. And as last Thursday's episode ended, Alexis Granville was clinging to life. Or, at the very least, Alexis Granville was having a panic attack. What comes next? Follow along with my recap of Wednesday's (February 11) episode... 8:00 p.m. Et. "It's always a very telling day," J-Lo says, sitting up in the balcony with the other judges. 8:02 p.m. But back to Alexis Granville and the subsequent time-out. Recovered from her anxiety attack, Alexis made it back on the stage with Sal's Gal. Sal Valentinetti won some good faith with his kindness to Alexis and he does his Rat Pack thing. Alexis warbles uncertainly. Jax mewls and growls soulfully. There were several other people in that group we didn't hear solo. Boo. Harry Connick Jr....
