The first full-length trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three has just hit (via Toonado.com), and it teases what looks to be a high-stakes finale to this animated trilogy (and the Tomorrowverse as we know it).
With the Anti-Monitor on the loose, a whole host of heroes assemble to save the Multiverse, but it looks like that will be easier said than done when they also have Lex Luthor to contend with. Several other villains are also spotted, including The Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face.
In terms of cameos, the trailer ends with another Batman: The Animated Series tease. Batman Beyond also appears, but perhaps the biggest surprise comes when we return to the world of the Super Friends!
The Saturday morning cartoon aired between 1973 and 1985 on ABC and was produced by Hanna-Barbera. That classic animation style returns here and we're hoping the movie has even...

Plot: A creative writing assignment yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student.
Review: I wasn’t sure what to make of Miller’s Girl when I first heard of it. The idea of a teacher falling for a student isn’t exactly new, but there was a mystery present that I appreciated. And it’s honestly, given that subject matter, a very tough film to talk about. The topic is taboo and won’t be for everyone, and the filmmakers really take advantage of that uncomfortably. On a technical side, the film is gorgeously shot and takes advantage of its beautiful sets. Plus, I have a soft spot for erotic thrillers. But this one has very few teeth and is as obvious as they come.
There’s clearly something not quite right about Jenna Ortega‘s Cairo right from the start. She exhibits an intellectual way of dissecting...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on January 25th, 2024, reviewing “Miller’s Girl.,” a teacher and student reciprocation written and directed by Jade Hailey Bartlett. In theaters on January 26th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) is a creative writing teacher who has a new student named Cairo (Jenna Ortega). She is an exceptional and unusual writer, a once in a lifetime find for the hidden author in Miller’s soul. When a short story assignment he gives her spins out of control, it leads to some inappropriate interaction between teacher and student, enough to affect all lives involved.
”Miller’s Girl” is in theaters on January 26th. Featuring Martin Freeman, Jenna Ortega, Gideon Adlon, Bashir Salahuddin and Dagmara Dominczyk. Written and directed by Jade Hailey Bartlett. Rated “R”

“I’m 18 and highly unremarkable.”
So starts “Miller’s Girl,” a drama-slash-psychological thriller that serves more so as an indictment of modern multilayered sexual politics than an (as marketed) after school special. As our lead character Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) says, “longing” to experience something is the most dangerous force there is, and for Cairo, that longing culminates in a misguided crush and a politicized heartbreak with a professor (Martin Freeman).
High school student Cairo enrolls in a creative writing class taught by frustrated novelist Jonathan Miller (Freeman), who immediately takes a liking to her after spotting that she has a copies of both his debut novel and Henry Miller’s salacious works. Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, “Miller’s Girl” plays on the titular Mr. Miller and the real-life author Miller himself, with Cairo’s compulsion to impress and find solace in her teacher further radicalized by taking on...

“Miller’s Girl,” about a relationship that develops between a wise-beyond-her-years teenager and her intellectually undernourished teacher, feels like catnip for the circular discourse of Film Twitter, but it’s hard to tell where a study of post-#MeToo power dynamics will land with moviegoers in the real world.
Written, produced and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, the film is both impressively erudite and unrelentingly self-aware, a combination it bravely attempts but doesn’t quite fully balance. But Jenna Ortega’s movie-star confidence in the title role more than eclipses Martin Freeman’s shoe-leather character acting, a perhaps inevitable outcome given the age and gender politics exercised in its story — but not necessarily one that gets at something truly interesting.

The fact that Jenna Ortega won’t be in Scream 7 was a shocking announcement last month (apparently her absence from the sequel is due to a pay dispute), but there are still going to be plenty of chances to see her on our screens regularly. She’s set to start filming Wednesday season 2 in a few months, she’s in the crime thriller Finestkind (which just started streaming on Paramount+ last Friday), and on January 26th she’ll be back on the big screen when Lionsgate gives the psychological thriller Miller’s Girl a theatrical release. With that release date just one month away, a trailer for Miller’s Girl has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Jenna Ortega is trying on playing a seductress for size. The “Beetlejuice 2” and “Wednesday” star leads psychological thriller “Miller’s Girl” in what appears to be a ’90s-esque tale of twisted teen power dynamics set against the backdrop of an elite university.
Martin Freeman stars as the titular Mr. Miller, a teacher who becomes entangled with talented student Cairo (Ortega), who has an agenda all her own. As 18-year-old Cairo taunts Mr. Miller into a game of truth or dare, a more sinister scheme of blackmailing ensues.
The official synopsis reads: “A talented young writer (Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.”

"You are my student. And I am your teacher. That's all..." Lionsgate has unveiled the trailer for Miller's Girl, which is set to open in January after a premiere at the 2024 Palm Springs Film Festival that month. It's a romantic entanglement between teacher and student psychological thriller from a screenwriter making her directorial debut. The short synopsis: A creative writing assignment yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student. "As lines blur & lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear." Oh boy, this sounds spicy. Jenna Ortega stars with Martin Freeman as the professor, plus a cast including Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin, Gideon Adlon, & Christine Adams. This looks so cliche and obvious, I bet everyone knows exactly what's going to happen without even having to watch it. // Continue Reading ›...

Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman find themselves embroiled in a heated student-teacher dynamic in the trailer for the upcoming feature Miller’s Girl.
Lionsgate is set to release the film from writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett on Jan. 26 after it debuts at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier that month. “Why did you write this?” Freeman asks in the drama’s trailer. “This is inappropriate.” This leads Ortega to respond, “‘Write what you know,’ is what you said.”
Later, Freeman laments, “If she can convince them that something happened between us, I would lose my job.”

Contrary to what you might think based on the plethora of Christmas films and TV series that flooded the streaming landscape recently, we're only now heading into the final month of 2023 and the winter holiday bonanza that comes with them. For Netflix, in particular, December is a time when it pulls out the big guns, tempting its subscribers with an eclectic blend of prestige television, awards season contenders, and crowd-pleasers. This year, that includes the end of the royal drama with "The Crown" season 6, part 2, Bradley Cooper going for the gold (again) with his Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro," and whatever the hell Zack Snyder has cooked up for us with the first half of his two-part "Star Wars"-inspired cosmic epic, "Rebel Moon -- Part One: A Child of Fire."
However, in lieu of focusing on the releases that are positioned to soak up the bulk of everyone's attention, I...

The latest Warner Animated DC feature film adapts the 2000-2001 Elseworlds miniseries Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham. The fun of the Elseworlds comics, and soon the live-action versions under the new artistic regime, is taking the familiar and imagining them in other times and other places. Here, we do back to the early 20th century and overlay it with a dose of Loftcraftian horror.

Based on a 2001 three-issue comic book miniseries written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is an alternate-world tale that introduced an alternate version of Bruce Wayne and the residents of Gotham to Lovecraftian horrors. It’s the most overtly horrific entry in the animated Batman franchise as well as the strangest.
In the 1920s an expedition led by Bruce Wayne arrives in Antarctica looking for another expedition, this one led by Professor Cobblepot. What he finds instead are mutated creatures and the professor’s undead assistant Grendon whom he brings back to Gotham.

As the pandemic steadily brings the world to a halt, Parker and her best friend Miri decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone–or so they think.
Despite being a decently entertaining horror slasher flick, isn’t it still a bit too soon to be making films based around the Covid-19 pandemic? There are still many places and countries all around the world that are dealing with the deadly virus, and yet here we are making films based on it already.
Regardless, John Hyams‘ Sick is a relatively enjoyable slasher that manages to inject a bit of cleverness into the genre along the way, seamlessly blending together a home-invasion style horror with a masked serial killer horror. Sometimes, the film can be a bit of a drag,...

For children of the ‘90s — elder millennials, or so they call us — Kevin Williamson is a near-mythical figure. This is, after all, the man who burst onto the scene with his screenplay for 1996’s meta-horror classic Scream, followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, Halloween H20 and The Faculty. Then there was Dawson’s Creek, a coming-of-age teen drama centering a group of garrulous film geeks that birthed an entirely new genre of TV nerd (see: Seth Cohen).

While Sick will likely gain attention for its pandemic-driven premise, the new thriller from Scream (1996) screenwriter Kevin Williamson is much more than just a current events-capitalizing scary movie. Lean, intense, and smart, it’s one of the better recent additions to the slasher genre while also being a rare film with something to say about the Covid crisis.
The film takes place in April 2020, during the early days of quarantines, lockdowns, and toilet paper scarcity. College students Parker (Gideon Adlon) and Miri (Bethlehem Million) head to a cabin in the woods to ride out the pandemic and stay safe; they’re joined by Parker’s sort-of boyfriend DJ (Dylan Sprayberry) – as well as a masked killer intent on wreaking their own deadly havoc. It’s a simple premise, knocked out in a tension-filled 82 minutes.

January is often viewed as the "dump month" for Hollywood studios, where films producers don't have faith in are unceremoniously released to little fanfare just to fulfill contractual release obligations. Fortunately, for horror, January is when things get exciting again. After the full-tilt madness of the Halloween season, horror typically takes a back seat in November and December as holiday films and Oscar bait take center stage. But once that ball drops to usher in a new year, horror arrives to get the party started. Horror has never played by the conventional rules of release slates, and that's great news for film fans who prefer their viewing habits with a side of viscera.
While "M3GAN" continues to slay at the box office, Blumhouse has another horror flick hacking its way to the streaming platform Peacock -- the pandemic slasher, "Sick." The film takes place circa April 2020, when the harsh reality...

Plot: During the pandemic lockdown, two friends find safety staying in a family lake house. They soon realize that a crazed killer has made themselves welcome for a deadly night of stalk and slash.
Review: Kevin Williamson has been a respected name in horror for years. The impact that his collaboration with the legendary Wes Craven in the Scream franchise is notable. And now, Mr. Williamson has something new. In his latest, he has a “story by” credit as well as the role of producer; the man has a new scary story to tell. Only this time, his scary story is particularly relevant. While we’ve certainly seen Covid-19 referenced in films and television as of late, Sick takes place during the recent lockdown. The film stars Jane Adams, Marc Menchaca, Gideon Adlon, Bethlehem Million, and Dylan Sprayberry, and it delves right into the craziness we’ve all experienced. Except...

If Covid doesn’t kill you, the tall guy with the hunting knife probably will. That’s the hook in John Hyams’ “Sick,” which makes clever work of an ongoing health scare, and especially the way that college-age kids dealt with CDC restrictions — often by ignoring them — adding a few disposable undergrads to the pandemic’s otherwise tragic body count. That’s what’s so compelling about this quick-turnaround collaboration from Kevin Williamson and “Scream” assistant-turned-co-writer Katelyn Crabb, now streaming on Peacock: You’re never really sure whether you should be rooting for its inconsiderate young coeds or counting on a slasher to teach them a lesson.
Playing on our lingering paranoia, “Sick” kicks off with a scene that recalls the early, uncertain days of the pandemic. A college kid named Tyler (Joel Courtney) wanders an apocalyptic-looking grocery store whose shelves have been emptied of Tp and other essentials. He...

Give Kevin Williamson credit: The screenwriter behind the Scream series isn’t afraid to recycle his greatest hits. His new addition to the slasher-film canon opens on a young man named Tyler (Joel Courtney) wandering the aisles of a cleaned-out supermarket. It’s April 3rd, 2020. Covid-19 cases are exponentially rising. Most of the country is in full lockdown mode. Everyone is masked. Forget about finding toilet paper.
While he’s browsing for some shelter-in-place essentials, Tyler gets a text: “Wanna party?” He has no idea who’s asking. Later, while he’s checking out,...

It’s been strange to discover how many filmmakers have willfully ignored the fact that, for a couple of very recent years, the planet Earth was completely consumed by a deadly pandemic that killed millions of people, tanked our economies, transformed social interactions, and probably changed life as we know it forever. Most movies and TV shows are happy to pretend those years never happened, and have never interrupted the flow of their characters’ lives. But horror filmmakers — who work fast, work cheap, and have carte blanche to confront our most uncomfortable anxieties — are the exception.
The “Lockdown Wave” of filmmaking, with productions that took place in the midst of the pandemic or its immediate aftermath, has already yielded fascinating results. Films like “Host” nimbly explored themes of shared cultural responsibility, while Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s “Something in the Dirt” tackled broader existential dilemmas. It seems only fitting that Kevin Williamson,...

Sick, the new slasher/home invasion film written by Kevin Williamson and Katelyn Crabb, opens with a mini-scroll. In addition to reminding audiences about the early onslaught of Covid, orders to self-isolate and the early death toll, there is a key establishing date: April 3, 2020.
The date is paramount in establishing the context for Sick. The film takes place during a single night in the very early days of the pandemic: a time when fear, distrust and, yes, rage dominated a lot of our interactions with anyone entering our six-foot radius.
There’s plenty of humor regarding Covid and its accompanying protocols, such as toilet paper shortages and refusing to assist someone in a life or death situation because they aren’t wearing a mask. We also see characters scrub down groceries with antibacterial wipes, an outdated practice that most people abandoned early during lockdown. Several of these moments are reminders...

"The only neighbor is miles away." Peacock has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror titled Sick, the latest from director John Hyams. This is skipping theaters and dropping onto the Peacock streaming service, which is a bit strange for a horror film that was a big hit at film festivals last fall. It premiered at TIFF and screened at Fantastic Fest, Philadelphia, Chicago, & Oldenburg. It's also co-written by the creator of the Scream movies. Due to the pandemic, Parker and her best friend decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone - or so they think. Is this another Barbarian or something else entirely? Sick stars Gideon Adlon, Bethlehem Million, Marc Menchaca, and Jane Adams. This looks terrifying and freaky, but the masked killer doesn't seem that original or interesting? Though it's hard to tell what the big twist will be. ›››

Movies set during the Covid-19 pandemic have been pretty hit or miss. For every "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," there has been a "Bubble." Perhaps it's just too early to make a truly great pandemic movie, at least if you're trying to make a regular comedy or drama. If you're "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning" director John Hyams and "Scream" screenwriter Kevin Williamson, however, you're probably not looking to make a straightforward movie. No, you're more likely to make a twisted mash-up of genres that makes reliving the worst days of the pandemic as fun as possible.
And that is exactly what "Sick," the duo's TIFF and Fantastic Fest hit, looks like. Peacock has been announced as the film's distributor, marking the occasion with a trailer that gives viewers a taste of the fast-paced madness that lies ahead. In April 2020, best friends Parker (Gideon Adlon) and Miri (Bethlehem Million...
