The layoff that hit ABC News this week hit correspondents Marci Gonzelez, Clayton Sandell and Kyra Phillips, as well as executive producers Jeanmarie Condon, David Reiter and John Green, according to an individual with knowledge of the network.
In addition, Hilary Estey McLaughlin, who oversaw daytime programming like “The View,” was among those who got the pink slip. Others affected included correspondents, executive producers and other executives who oversaw functions like special events and news gathering.
A spokesperson did not comment on the layoffs — which affected a percentage of the news division’s 1,300 person staff in the low single digits — or any potential severance packages.
“Unfortunately, as we position ABC News for the future, we’ve made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our workforce in a few areas,” ABC News President James Goldston said in a Thursday memo to staff. “As hard as this moment is for our colleagues,...

Just because fans have been incredibly vocal in their criticism of how Disney and Lucasfilm have handled the recent era of Star Wars projects, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still one of the most popular and beloved franchises on the planet. If anything, the backlash that seems to greet almost all of the goings on in a galaxy far, far away just reinforces how important it is to a lot of people.
With the fanbase arguably more disenfranchised than ever though, the studio would surely have been planning some major announcements for this year’s Star Wars Celebration in order to win many of them back over, and that would have no doubt included the debut of brand new footage from the second season of The Mandalorian, as well as some more concrete information about what’s to come on the big screen.

A tweet from the Minneapolis State Patrol on the early morning arrests of CNN reporter Omar Jimenez and his crew has drawn sharp criticism for its inaccuracy.
Jimenez and his camera crew were arrested during a live CNN broadcast early Friday while covering the Minneapolis protests over the death in police custody of George Floyd. The entire incident unfolded live on CNN’s New Day. Jimenez could be seen identifying himself as a reporter while holding his CNN badge and telling State Patrol officers his crew would move wherever police needed them to. Jimenez was placed in handcuffs and walked away by the officer. He was then followed by the rest of the camera crew, who also were placed in handcuffs and taken away. They were later released after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz intervened.

Though the next Star Wars film isn’t scheduled for release until December 2022, fans will hardly be starved for material in the years to come. For one thing, Lucasfilm has already spent months teasing plans for something they call “Project Luminous,” and on Monday night, it seems we’ll finally get some official info on what exactly this mysterious project will be.
ABC correspondent Clayton Sandell took to Twitter over the weekend with the following announcement:
“Star Wars Project Luminous will finally be revealed Monday evening. What is it exactly? Details will start to emerge around 7 Pm Pacific time tomorrow night. #StarWars #ProjectLuminous #Mtfbwy”
Going by what we’ve heard already, the Project Luminous umbrella will encompass a new series of books, games and other forms of media that will essentially tell one big, cohesive story in the Star Wars galaxy.

Late last month, it was confirmed in an Entertainment Weekly article that the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park expansion will feature an “elite squad from the First Order” named “the Red Fury,” whose ship will be a Tie Echelon with “a cockpit similar to Kylo Ren’s batwinged shuttle but the curved foils of Darth Vader’s Tie Advanced x1.” And while it was previously speculated that this fighter will feature in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, a recent report from ABC news correspondent Clayton Sandell makes this possibility seem more likely than ever.
Sandell was on the Galaxy’s Edge tour when he managed to get a few details on the model fighter, telling Star Wars News Net:
“That’s where the Tie fighter is parked and it is an awesome Tie fighter. A brand new Tie fighter that nobody has ever seen before. And they...

We’ve known for awhile already that there would be some unused footage of Carrie Fisher from the previously made Star Wars films that would be incorporated into J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX.
Abrams initially talked about using the unused footage of Carrie Fisher, he only mentioned footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Here's that statement:
"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII."
It was later revealed that there would be unused footage from The Last Jedi as well. ABC News’ Clayton Sandell, previously talked to Carrie's brother Todd, and...

Solo: A Star Wars Story premiered last night and the initial reactions have flooded social media! In case you're wondering what people thought, for the most part, it sounds like Star Wars fans are going to enjoy it! The movie received a good amount of high praise from those who had a chance to see. There are a few people that did have issues with it, but some things that almost everyone agrees on is that the movie is a blast and Donald Glover as Han Solo is one of the best parts of the film. There are even some people who praise Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, which is great to hear! A lot of people were worried about his portrayal of the iconic character.
I'm actually going to see the movie later tonight and after reading all of this great buzz, I'm pretty stoked! I'm just a huge Star Wars fan.

Most fans still have to wait another two weeks to see “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” but those lucky enough to attend the Hollywood premiere Thursday night are sharing their thoughts. The verdict: “Solo” is a great intergalactic heist movie, and star Alden Ehrenreich is fully capable of filling Harrison Ford’s Han Solo boots.
Also, Donald Glover is phenomenal as Lando Calrissian.
The prequel to 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope” delves into the early life of everybody’s favorite scoundrel, Han Solo (played originally by Ford and here by Ehrenreich). We all know Han as the best smuggler around, working for Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine with his best bud, walking carpet wookiee warrior Chewbacca, and flying the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon.
Before he was all that — as well as a general fighting or the Rebellion, Luke Skywalker’s best friend and Leia Organa’s paramour — Han was a nobody. “Solo” finds him gaining his best friend and his ship, filling in a piece of “Star Wars” history that’s been alluded to but never seen: Han winning the Millennium Falcon from Lando.

“Solo” hasn’t had the easiest time making it to the screen, though. Lucasfilm originally hired “The Lego Movie” directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to helm the movie, signaling that it’s more of a comedy than previous “Star Wars” movies have been. Lucasfilm fired the two directors, however, reportedly after their creative vision clashed with that of screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and his son and co-writer, Jason Kasdan.
Ron Howard picked up the baton for “Solo,” finishing the movie and reshooting much of it — reportedly, as much as 70 percent of the movie is now made up of reshoots, giving “Solo” a different feel from the original cut. But folks at the premiere found it to be emotional, exciting and the most action-packed of any “Star Wars” movie.
Read the reactions below.
#SoloAStarWarsStory: It takes a bit for it to find its feet and for Ae to turn on enough charm to make you forget he’s not Hf. But once it kicks into its hey-let’s-make-a-crew and yes-also-do-a-heist stuff, it totally flies.

I figured if @DisneyStudios was willing to show 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' a few weeks before release it must be good and it absolutely is. Film is a blast and a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. @RealRonHoward you did a great job. Congrats. pic.twitter.com/1pkWH2y6qE

#Solo is a ton of fun! Alden Ehrenreich is full of charm and definitely does right by Harrison Ford. Not to mention Donald Glover, who's equally great as Lando.

#SoloAStarWarsStory is reaaaaalllly good. Fun as hell. It’s a straight intergalactic heist movie, kind of refreshing to see a Star Wars movie w/o a Death Star or the rebellion’s fate at stake. Alden Ehrenreich is super impressive as Han, but L3 might be my favorite new character.

That eternal struggle between good and evil – between the dark side and the light – has been a cornerstone of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise ever since Luke Skywalker walked out into Tatooine’s twin sunset. And when it comes to The Last Jedi, that feud will essentially boil down to two very powerful individuals who may have more in common than we’ve been led to believe: Rey and Kylo Ren.
