He worked in the music business before moving into radio. In 1972, he joined the BBC, reading the news and presenting various programs on Radio 2, before he began reading the classified football results in 1973.
One of the most recognizable voices in British broadcasting, he read the football results on BBC radio for 40 years.
He contracted polio when he was six months old, and spent much of his childhood in the hospital.
