When the child-trafficking drama Sound of Freedom conquered the box office this summer, ultimately taking in more than $242 million worldwide, it was touted as a triumph. Leading man Jim Caviezel, hardly seen since his CBS sci-fi series Person of Interest ended in 2016, proved that he could still command an audience. Tim Ballard, the anti-trafficking activist whose purported rescues of abducted children inspired the film, basked in its hagiographic glow. Director and co-writer Alejando Monteverde, who had once believed this project “would never see the light of day,” witnessed it become a global phenomenon.

All eyes will be on First Lady Melania Trump as she headlines Night 2 of the 2020 Republican National Convention.
Four years ago, the wife of then-candidate Donald Trump closed out Night 1 of the Rnc with remarks that were partly cribbed from the speech that Michelle Obama delivered at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. The following day, Tony Award winner Laura Benanti went viral when she made her first appearance as Melania on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and offered a written apology with even more borrowed lines.

First Lady Melania Trump will speak to the Republican National Convention on Tuesday from a location perhaps unlike any other previous party gathering: the White House Rose Garden.
It’s anticipated that her speech will tie in with her “Be Best” initiative, but networks likely will compare her remarks to those she delivered in 2016. Back then, her speech triggered a bit of a convention sideshow when it was revealed that portions of the speech were taken from Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention address.
The first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, told MSNBC on Tuesday that every word of the first lady’s speech on Tuesday night will be from her, and that it will be uplifting and positive.
The speech also will be an unveiling of the newly renovated Rose Garden, and as things tend to go these days, that, too, has been the subject of some controversy. Critics decried the removal of 10 crabapple trees,...

“Unplanned” is exactly the movie you expect it to be, which is why it’s making healthy profits despite minimal advertising and overwhelmingly negative reviews. Like other faith-based films before it — the “God’s Not Dead” series, “Heaven Is for Real,” and “I Can Only Imagine” all come to mind — Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman’s anti-abortion drama is preaching to the choir. Pure Flix Entertainment knows that its self-selecting audience would rather have its existing views affirmed rather than challenged, a strategy they’re far from the first to employ. Christian moviegoers are hardly the only demographic guilty of wanting to see their ideals reflected back at them, as evidenced by the reception to any number of toothless prestige pictures.
But what about when viewers like a movie or TV series despite its values, not because of them? Do conservative “Game of Thrones” obsessives resent the fact that it...

Dedicated to every woman who ever had an abortion and regretted it for the rest of her life, "Unplanned" is the new dramatic feature written, directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, based on a memoir by Abby Johnson, a former 'Planned Parenthood' employee, starring Ashley Bratcher, Brooks Ryan, Robia Scott, Jared Lotz and Emma Elle Roberts, now playing:
"...'Abby Johnson' one of the youngest 'Planned Parenthood' clinic directors in the Us, where baby body parts are routinely harvested, is asked to assist in an ultrasound-guided abortion at thirteen weeks gestation.
"After witnessing the gruesome procedure, Johnson becomes an anti-abortion activist and founds a group to assist former Planned Parenthood employees who turned against abortion after similar experiences..."

Faith-based film distributor Pure Flix found success with its anti-abortion film “Unplanned,” which earned an opening weekend of $6.1 million, double the amount projected by box office trackers.
Released on 1,059 screens, the film tells the true story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director who left the organization and became a pro-life activist after witnessing an abortion. It was partially financed by My Pillow founder Mike Lindell, a born again Christian and Donald Trump supporter.

Like many faith-based films, “Unplanned” saw most of its business in midwestern and southern U.S. states, with Dallas, Detroit and St. Louis holding the top theaters. Overall, “Unplanned” is the second highest opening for any Pure Flix release, sitting only behind the $7.6 million opening for “God’s Not Dead 2.”
It wasn’t an easy road to this strong opening.

After having its TV spots shut out by my most mainstream cable networks and its Twitter account frozen for two-three hours yesterday, PureFlix’s anti-abortion feature Unplanned, which was slapped with an R rating by the MPAA, opened to $6.1M at 1,059 theaters, making it the second-best opening for the faith-based studio’s self-distributed titles after God’s Not Dead 2 ($7.6M).
While not a huge win by major studio standards, for the indie label which produced the $5M-$6M with co-financer Mike Lindell (the inventor of MyPillow), it’s an achievement, given the controversy the pic has weathered. Arguably, there hasn’t be an R-rated, faith-based movie since Mel Gibson’s 2004 The Passion of the Christ. Typically, faith-based movies do 2-3 times their domestic box office in TV and home ancillaries. It’s Lent, so it wouldn’t be a shocker if Unplanned legs out. God’s Not Dead, which PureFlix released through FreeStyle,...

Disney’s “Dumbo” had an underwhelming liftoff at the domestic box office. Tim Burton’s live-action remake of the 1941 cartoon debuted with $45 million from 4,259 North American theaters, below expectations heading into the weekend.
While that was easily enough to top the domestic box office, it marks the lowest start among the studio’s recent live-action remakes of Disney classics. To compare, 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” debuted with $174 million, 2016’s “The Jungle Book” opened with $103 million, and 2015’s “Cinderella” launched with $67 million.
Earlier estimates had indicated that “Dumbo” could surpass $50 million in its first three days of release. Part of the reason for the softer opening is likely that the original “Dumbo” cartoon debuted almost 80 years ago, making the lovable elephant seem somewhat less relevant than classics like “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Jungle Book,” which both became huge successes for the studio.

Continuing its somewhat haphazard and opaque policy of banning some controversial things while ignoring others, Twitter today briefly suspended the account for the anti-abortion movie Unplanned. The account was later restored, but not before igniting an uproar.
Pro-life advocates argued that the account was taken down during the movie’s opening weekend to suppress turnout. They flooded Twitter support and the company’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, with complaints, and shortly thereafter, the account was restored.
The movie’s producers thanked all for the support. “We are back and excited for the great response we’re getting in theaters this weekend. #grateful.”
Reports indicated Twitter suspended the account because it was linked to another account that violated Twitter’s code of conduct. The algorithms of Twitter then automatically suspend linked accounts.
Ironically, if the intent to shut down the account was an attempt to damage awareness, it failed. The producers reported...

Christian-focused production company Pure Flix’s latest release, “Unplanned,” had its Twitter account restored Saturday after it was briefly suspended.
“Thank you everyone for your support in letting Jack & Twitter know when our Unplanned movie account was recently suspended without cause,” the film’s account tweeted Saturday. “We are back and excited for the great response we’re getting in theaters this weekend.”

According to Twitter, the suspension was not as a result of the “Unplanned” account’s content. Rather, another account had violated Twitter rules, which can sometimes result in linked accounts being investigated to prevent ban evasion. On a second review, the “Unplanned” account was cleared and reinstated.

“Unplanned” isn’t a good movie, but it’s effective propaganda — or, at least, it is if you belong to the group it’s targeting: those who believe that abortion in America, though a legal right, is really a crime. It’s hard to imagine the movie drawing many viewers outside that self-selected demographic. “Unplanned” preaches to the pro-life choir, and it does so by making a case against abortion that’s absolutist and extreme, at certain points twisting “facts” into a narrative of conspiracy. (Planned Parenthood is portrayed as a corporation as profit-driven as Standard Oil.)
But “Unplanned” also does a skillful job of using religious piety to conceal its underlying political agenda. The film is based on a memoir by Abby Johnson, an anti-abortion activist who worked for eight years in a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas. Editors note: Ashley Bratcher, who lives in Georgia, is starring in the Pure Flix movie Unplanned, the story of Planned Parenthood director-turned-anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson that is bowing Friday in 1,006 theaters nationwide. She reached out to Deadline to respond to Alyssa Milano’s guest column earlier this week seeking to draw Hollywood’s attention to Georgia’s “Heartbeat Bill” legislation, which proposes to outlaw abortions once a doctor detects a fetal heartbeat in the womb. Milano urged the film and TV industries, which utilize the Peach State’s expansive tax incentives, to boycott the state if the bill passes. That bill, HB481, is due for a final vote next week, with Gov. Brian Kemp expected to sign it if it gets to his desk.

Pure Flix Entertainment, the family-friendly label known for distributing God’s Not Dead and a few dozen other movies aimed at Christians, will release its first R-rated film next month — and it is none too happy about having to do so.
The film, Unplanned, tells the true story of Abby Johnson, who defected from Planned Parenthood to become a pro-life activist. While the filmmakers were certain they were making a PG-13 film, the MPAA has informed them that it will, in fact, be rated R unless all scenes of abortions are removed or altered.
