Spoiler Alert: This story features details from Season 6 of The Crown
Reviews are in for the first four episodes of the sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown, and judging from reactions in the UK and France, there’s a divide just about as wide as the English Channel.
The two countries will forever be linked by the tragedy that was the death of Princess Diana in a Parisian car crash on August 31, 1997. But critics today are divergent.
Several major British outlets are negative on the latest installments which dropped at 8am local time, with some taking issue with visions of the late Princess who engages in conversations with the Queen and Prince Charles. These scenes have gotten a lot of attention, referenced as featuring Diana’s “ghost.” The Crown creator Peter Morgan recently told Deadline, “The word ghost is unhelpful, I was never writing anything from a supernatural perspective,...

Guy Pearce issued an apology statement on Twitter after appearing to suggest that non-trans actors should be able to play trans characters.
Pearce, whose breakout role came playing a drag queen in 1994’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, tweeted on Monday (27 March): “A question – if the only people allowed to play trans characters r trans folk, then r we also suggesting the only people trans folk can play r trans characters?
“Surely that will limit ur career as an actor? Isn’t the point of an actor to be able play anyone outside ur own world?”
When people in his replies pointed out that there were few trans roles available and that those out there should go to trans people, Pearce responded (via MovieMaker): “Ok, so if this debate is actually about Trans actors not getting the opportunities to work like other actors do then...

Ashton Kutcher says his wife and former co-star Mila Kunis refused to let him turn down That ‘70s show’s spinoff series, That ‘90s Show.
The new Netflix series, which premiered last month, was co-developed by That ’70s Show creators Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner and Mark Brazill, and Lindsey Turner.
It is set in Wisconsin and follows Leia Forman, the teenage daughter of That ‘70s Show characters Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon).
Kutcher, 44, told Esquire that when the pitch first came in for the duo to reprise their respective roles as Kelso and Jackie, Kunis told him: “You know, we owe our entire careers to this show. It doesn’t matter what the script is, we’re doing it.”
Kutcher and Kunis’s characters are married in That ’90s Show.
In a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, Kunis revealed that she disagreed with the showrunners’ decision to have them end up together.

That ’90s Show, a spin-off of the popular throwback sitcom That ’70s Show, made its debut on Netflix last week – but fans have one big complaint.
Starring Callie Haverda, Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, the series is set 15 years after That ’70s Show, and sees some of the original cast return to make cameos.
That ’70s Show originally aired on Fox between 1998 and 2006. The series experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 2010s after it was made available to stream in its entirety on Netflix.
However, the series was removed from Netflix’s catalogue in 2020 – a move that has drawn the ire of fans after the streaming service released its sequel.
“Why would Netflix produce That 90s Show but not have That 70s Show available,” one person wrote. “That’s so stupid.”
“Wait… lmao you’re telling me Netflix doesn’t have That 70s Show on their platform while airing That 90s Show?...

HBO’s live-action seriesThe Last of Us has set a new record with its Rotten Tomatoes score.
The show, which premieres in the US on Sunday 15 January and on Monday 16 January on Sky Atlantic in the UK, is adapted from the acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name.
Ahead of its debut, The Last of Us has been lavished with praise by many reviewers – including The Independent’s chief TV critic Nick Hilton.
On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently boasts a glowing “fresh” score of 97 per cent positive reviews.
The score is especially noteworthy given the tepid reception video game adaptations usually receive. Several – such as 1993’s Super Mario Bros or 2003’s Alone in the Dark – have been cited as ranking among the worst films ever made.
In fact, while it’s possible the series’ ranking may drop a percentage point or two in the next week,...

Sometimes, all it takes is six words to ruin a good thing. “Adapted from the hit video game.” When it comes to film and TV, there are few phrases more ominous. And yet, since the early days of gaming, ill-fated live-action adaptations have kept popping up. Occasionally, the efforts have lived on in infamy: think of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo’s bafflingly misconceived Super Mario Bros. (1993). Or the gaudy, incomprehensible Assassin’s Creed (2016). Or Hitman – a game so nice, they adapted it twice (both times with truly execrable results). So when it was announced that HBO would be adapting The Last of Us, one of the most acclaimed video games ever made, into a new big budget TV series, it’s fair to say that even the most diehard fans had reason for trepidation.
On the surface, The Last of Us – a gritty post-apocalyptic road narrative about a jaded, grief-stricken...

Somewhere on the M1, between London and The North, a sleepy James Norton is sprawled out in the back of a car. It’s a very nice car, he tells me, with lots of leg room. The fields flanking the motorway are getting snowier as he travels up the country. The star of Happy Valley and McMafia is wearing a “big, baggy tracksuit” and plans to have a “hefty snooze” after our interview, because he can’t stay awake on long drives. He laughs at my line of questioning – about his appearance and surroundings – telling me, “You’re going to twist this so it sounds like I’m the Queen of Sheba!”
There is a good reason why I’m asking the 37-year-old actor, in the least suggestive way possible, to describe where he is and what he’s wearing on the phone. He can’t meet in person or jump on Zoom.

Netflix has given viewers instructions for how to watch its new series Kaleidoscope “as a Quentin Tarantino film”.
The series, released on the streaming service last week, is non-linear, meaning that all of the episodes bar the finale can be watched in any order.
Viewers have shared their own theories regarding the optimal order to watch the episodes, while some have made sure to warn others of one important mistake to avoid.
On Twitter, the official Netflix account shared four suggestions for the order in which to screen the episodes.
The first option suggested is in chronological order, with episodes lined up to follow the timeline sequentially from 24 years before the heist, through to its six-month aftermath.
Secondly, Netflix proposes a way to watch the series “as a Tarantino film”, jumping around in time between the past, present and future. Tarantino has been known for deploying similar non-linear plot structures...

A dramatisation of the Wagatha Christie trial has captivated viewers with its portrayal of the legal battle between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney.
Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama, starring Natalia Tena and Chanel Cresswell, is a two-part series that began on Channel 4 on Wednesday (21 December).
The Independent’s reviewer, Nick Hilton, wasn’t too impressed with the programme. His one-star review said that the speed of its production felt “typical of the laziness of the British TV conveyor belt” and summarised: “It’s.......... a pile of crap.”
Vardy sued Rooney for libel at the High Court in May, after Rooney claimed that Vardy’s Instagram account had been responsible for leaks to the media.
After the case was dismissed by the judge in July, production on Vardy v Rooney began one month later, using the real court transcripts to make up the majority of the script.

Stephen Graham may have been nominated for seven television Baftas, but that doesn’t mean everyone in the industry knows who he is.
As the actor revealed on the new episode of The Graham Norton Show, he was recently mistaken for someone else on the set of his latest drama, The Walk-In.
In the ITV series based on a true story, Graham plays Matthew Collins, a far-right activist turned antifascist campaigner and journalist.
Despite Graham being the lead actor in the show, one co-star didn’t know who he was.
“One of the supporting artists thought I was someone else and said, ‘You are doing really well for yourself,’” recalled Graham.
“And I thought she was being really kind. But then she said, ‘I never thought it would happen to you after Big Brother’ – she thought I was Craig!”
