Montevideo, May 18 (Ians) Veteran Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa said that he did not need to be persuaded to accept the job as Uruguay’s national team boss.
The 67-year-old made the comments as he faced local media for the first time since officially replacing Diego Alonso on Monday, reports Xinhua.
Alonso’s contract was terminated after Uruguay’s failure to progress beyond the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“I did not have to be convinced… I like the players that have represented the country in recent years,” Bielsa told a news conference.
“There are countries that combine the awareness of their power, of their potential, and enhance it through fantasy and hope. Uruguay has the resources to nurture that hope.”
Bielsa, who agreed to a contract that runs until the 2026 World Cup, had been out of work since parting ways with Leeds United in February last year.

One of the standout ties in the opening round sees Manchester United take on Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United in a game between two traditional rivals.

It’s a mark of just how new the Latin American high-end series production scene is that “El Presidente” marks Amazon’s first Chilean Original, the first international series from Pablo and Juan de Diós Larrain’s Fabula to employ talent from all over Latin America, and “Narcos” producer Gaumont’s first TV co-production with Latin America.
Also produced by Argentina’s Kapow, and selected for main competition at Series Mania, “El Presidente” also represents the first TV work from Argentine Academy Award winning screenwriter-director Armando Bo, a co-scribe on “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).”

Newcastle United’s latest £14 million signing Florian Thauvin penned an open letter to Marseille fans after leaving the club – in which he described the Magpies as an “emblematic club”.
The winger also revealed he is “proud” to wear the Newcastle No 20 shirt vacated by Remy Cabella, who has headed the other way on loan, as he starts his “new adventure” in front of the “exceptional atmosphere at St James’ Park” after agreeing a five-year contract.
In his post on his Facebook page, Thauvin admitted there was a serious amount of “emotion” in penning the letter and that his time at Marseille did “not finish the way” he had hoped it would.

The 22-year-old also stated that he will “miss the (Stade) Velodrome” for the rest of his life and that he “never cheated”.

Marseille’s Florian Thauvin was verbally abused and spat on after Marseille’s home defeat to Caen on Saturday night, according to Get French Football News.
The French side were beaten 1-0, a defeat which led to L’Om manager Marcelo Bielsa resigning from the club minutes after the final whistle.
The madness continued after the final whistle as reports from the French football website claimed that as Thauvin left the ground he got out of his car after being spat on and had a physical scuffle with one of the perpetrators before getting back into his vehicle.
Newcastle United saw their last offer for the 22-year-old rebuffed by Marseille as they continued to court the French winger this summer.
La Provence claim the Magpies offered £12 million (€17 million) plus midfielder Remy Cabella on a season-long loan deal, but that Marseille wanted a fee in the region of £15 million.

Newcastle United are rapidly running out of candidates to take over as permanent head coach – with Paco Jemez and Christophe Galtier both now looking unlikely to fill the St James’ Park hotseat.
Rayo Vallecano boss Jemez is wanted by Ligue 1 side Marseille, who look likely to sack coach Marcelo Bielsa at the end of the season, while Galtier is close to agreeing a new deal at Saint-Etienne due to the fact he has had no official approaches from any other club.
Both had been considered viable and exciting contenders for the Magpies post, but interim head coach John Carver is rapidly looking like the only candidate left standing for the role vacated by Alan Pardew when the Londoner left for Crystal Palace at the turn of the year.

Towards the end of last season, with Alan Pardew struggling badly to get any kind of result out of his team, Christophe Galtier was linked with an unexpected move to Newcastle as his replacement in waiting.
Some reports even went as far as to say the club had approached Galtier, and indeed that his services had been offered to the Magpies, though “sources close” to him inevitably talked it down. And with Pardew a lot more “settled” – or unjustly untouchable more appropriately – talk died down.
But now, L’Equipe – via le10sport – are once more suggesting Newcastle as a possible destination for Galtier next season. They say that Marseille and Newcastle are strong contenders for his affections, but with Marcelo Bielsa doing well in France, it’s unlikely they will have a vacancy any time soon.

Newcastle could revive their interest in long-term target Dmitri Payet after the winger was put up for sale by new Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa at the weekend.
Efforts to improve our frail attack are ongoing with a bid for Montpellier playmaker Remy Cabella rejected last week and it’s no coincidence that Payet’s availability is being mentioned by the Chronicle in the wake of that.
That’s not to say the 27-year-old wouldn’t be welcomed to St James’ Park. In 30 starts last season he contributed eight goals and six assists, which is a more than respectable return for a wide player.
It’s reported that the France international could be available for around £8 million, perhaps even less, after he was informed by Bielsa that he is surplus to requirements at the Stade Veledrome.
That would fit into the unspecified budget Mike Ashley...

Despite Alan Pardew’s yearning for us to invest in more domestic talent this summer it seems Newcastle still hope to pick up a bargain or two on the continent.
And, according to the Northern Echo this morning, we’re set to table offers for overseas duo Pierre-Michel Lasogga (above) and Dimitri Payet (below) as the Club prepares to step its recruitment drive up a gear.
Replenishing a depleted attack is a key priority for Pardew, Loic Remy, Shola Ameobi and Luuk de Jong will all depart this summer, and Hertha Berlin striker Lasogga, who spent the season on loan at Hamburg, emerged as a target over the weekend.
The 22-year-old has certainly impressed at the Imtech Arena this term scoring 13 goals in 20 Bundesliga games for Die Rothosen despite them falling into the relegation play-offs, although the reported £10 million fee is likely to be a sticking point for us.

The last season heroics of Alan Pardew’s black and white army has failed to be repeated with Newcastle’s performances in this. A series of injuries have blighted their progress this term. They find themselves in a lowly 15th place going into 2013, with a goal difference of a worrying minus eleven. Having scored twenty six league goals in total, it’s easy to see that most of their problems lie in the defensive third, sharing the joint goals conceded record with relegation candidates Southampton and Queens Park Rangers.

One player heavily linked with a move away before this January transfer window officially opens at midnight tonight is Demba Ba, with Chelsea believed to have held talks with his representatives on Sunday. We all know Liverpool Fc aren’t the football club that they used to be. Constant failure in the Premier League and a gradual decline from European competition shows how much of a decline has happened. Liverpool may need to re-shape their entire squad come January but this is a list of 10 players that manager Brendan Rodgers must sign in order for the club to challenge in one competition or another. The interesting thing about Liverpool is that it is the attacking areas which need improvement as players like Stewart Downing simply haven’t delivered. It’s obvious that Brendan Rodgers wants to play attacking and attractive football, therefore higher quality players are needed if he wants to seriously succeed at a club which was once considered as one of the greatest, and is unfortunately on a very slippy slope.

Are United on the trail of the new pretender to king Ronaldo’s crown?
According to a report on CaughtOffside, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on signing Athletic Bilbao youngster Iker Muniain, who they say he has been tracking since the two sides faced off in last season’s Europa League tie, and Bilbao emerged victorious.
The report suggests that Sir Alex has been paying close attention to Bilbao’s current form and the situation at the club, which currently sits in 17th in the league after taking 8 points from 8 games. In addition manager Marcelo Bielsa has had “various run-ins” with the board, striker Fernando Llorente refuses to sign a new contract, and impressive midfielder Javi Martinez was sold for big money to Bayern Munich in the summer window. CaughtOffside are suggesting that the situation may give Muniain reason to look for a move to Old Trafford.
