Apple TV+’s new music competition series My Kind of Country couldn’t have chosen better Country music stars as season one scouts and mentors than Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen, and Orville Peck. All three understand the need for more inclusion within the world of Country music and are willing to share their experiences with talented artists from around the globe who are hoping to break through in the genre.
Four-time Grammy nominee and Time’s 2022 Breakthrough Artist of the Year Mickey Guyton believes Country music is a universal language and genre, and that it’s important to reach out and discover amazing artists who might not otherwise have an opportunity to find a wider audience. My Kind of Country makes that possible for 12 artists, with Guyton, Allen, and Peck each mentoring four aspiring solo artists or groups.

Jon Batiste offered a lively, soulful rendition of his track “Freedom” on The Late Late Show, giving the song a retro vibe for the performance. The song, which comes off Batiste’s new album We Are, got some accompaniment from backup singers who appeared on vintage TV sets behind the singer.
The performance was shot at the Orpheum Theatre in his hometown of New Orleans and was directed and choreographed by Jemel McWilliams.
We Are came out in March and features appearances from Mavis Staples, Quincy Jones, Zadie Smith, Pj Morton,...

The opening number of the Oscar ceremony earlier this was memorable for its spectacle and commentary. The host-less ceremony drew upon the star power of Janelle Monáe to perform an industry-focused version of “Come Alive,” highlighting characters from films that had been snubbed by the Academy. Bringing this to life was choreographer and Monáe’s frequent collaborator, Jemel McWilliams — who was simultaneously working on the Grammys opening number with Lizzo. Now, McWilliams is Emmy-nominated for the Oscars in the variety or reality choreography category.
What was the pressure of simultaneously preparing for the Grammys and the Oscars?
God worked it out so I couldn’t get too much in my head. I had completed the Grammys opening two weeks prior with Lizzo, but I was rehearsing and preparing for [it]. I started to prep the Oscars choreography on Jan. 2. I had to get the work done and didn’t have the...

Choreographer Jemel McWilliams is now an Emmy nominee thanks to his work on Janelle Monae‘s “Come Alive” performance that opened the 2020 Oscars. The production number featured numerous dancers behind Monae who were dressed as characters from notable films from 2019 that were mostly overlooked in nominations, including Black-led movies like “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Queen & Slim” and “Us.” It was a striking way to open a show that only saw one Black actor nominated. “I have seen progress but I have also desired more and progress with regards to inclusivity,” says McWilliams in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby, “and this year, I just felt honored that it seemed like they opened that door and they made a bold statement.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

We’re a few weeks away from finding out who wins the million-dollar grand prize on “World of Dance,” but those aren’t the only accolades up for grabs. Jefferson y Adrianita, the salsa duo who just made it through the Duels round, also just got an Emmy nomination for Best Choreography. They earned the nom for both of their routines that have aired on the show so far. Watch the first one above, and scroll down to see the other.
Jefferson Benjumea and Adrianita Avila choreographed “Dos Jueyes” for the Qualifiers round, for which judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo unanimously decided to send them to the next round. Then during the Duels they choreographed “El Rey Del Timbal” for their battle against fellow Latin dancers Luca and Alessandra. And again, the judges were unanimous in picking them as the winners, which means they’re on their way...

If there is anyone who can bring a full house at La's Staples Center to its feet, it's Lizzo. She opened up the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards with a wild performance (which was rewarded with a standing O), but it was her backup dancers who really made the performance magic. Back in January, Lizzo posted a selfie video on Instagram requesting "thick girl" ballerinas, though she didn't specify the purpose. "Calling All Ballet Dancers B*Tch - Send A Video Of You Dancing On Pointe To @jemelmcwilliams," she captioned the video, adding that dancers must be La-based, and if they look like Lizzo, "that a plus!"
Her choreographer, Jemel McWilliams, explained to Dance Magazine two days later that he and Lizzo were struggling to find professional ballet dancers who were curvier. "These dancers have been hiding for a long time, but they're in dance classes, groups, all over the nation,...
