Lionel Richie has been very emotional lately, but he wants to reassure everyone that he’s okay.
According to Richie, it’s just been a heady experience to look back nearly 40 years and relive all the wondrous and chaotic memories of writing and recording “We Are the World” for the new Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop.”
“Every segment of this journey, I cry,” Richie said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere. “It just brings tears to my eyes because some of us are not here anymore. Also it was our innocence. We actually were making a difference, so to see the naive version of ourselves, when we actually had an aha moment that we might take all this celebrity and change the world … I’m just emotional about it because I get to watch my kid being born again.

“I didn’t really know much about the making of the song,” admits The Greatest Night in Pop director Bao Nguyen of 1985’s star-studded Ethiopian famine relief hit “We Are the World.” “You just make these assumptions about how things are made because it just happens. But when you think now of 46 great artists getting together to make that, it would be really impossible for that to happen now.”
Whether or not the superstars of 2024 could or would come together like the hit makers of the Reagan Era did in America and the UK almost 40 years ago is debatable. What is a fact is that Nguyen’s latest documentary is debuting today at the Sundance Film Festival just a few days short of when U.S.A. for Africa recorded the Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson penned tune in a studio in Los Angeles. It is also a fact that, after a total of four Sundance screenings,...

One of the biggest pop culture moments of the 80s was when a large group of pop artists came together for a special one-time song dedicated to raising awareness and helping to end famine in Africa. That song, “We Are the World,” was amazingly stacked with talent, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis. A documentary from Netflix recounts the story of how the song came together with The Greatest Night in Pop. The film is also scheduled to screen at the Sundance Film Festival this year, with Lionel Richie in tow.
Netflix’s description of the documentary reads,
“On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history.

Exclusive: Netflix has set a January 29 streaming premiere date for The Greatest Night in Pop, a feature doc just announced as world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on the 19th of this month.
Directed by award winner Bao Nguyen (Be Water), the film takes viewers back to January 25, 1985, when dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a Los Angeles studio and checked their egos at the door amidst the recording of a song to benefit African famine relief — one that would alter global pop culture history. Chronicled in the doc is the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a time before cell phones and email. That group of artists, led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.

Netflix’s The Devil on Trial documentary examines the first murder trial in the United States to use the devil made me do it as a defense. The demonic possession trial took place in 1981, and although it’s been re-imagined for multiple films, many of the people with firsthand knowledge of the case have never been interviewed as a part of a documentary until now.
Teenager Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed to have been controlled by demonic forces when he brutally murdered his landlord, Alan Bono. Johnson’s case had a link to Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators whose work was the basis for The Conjuring and who examined the original Amityville haunting. In the end, the jury didn’t accept the demonic possession defense, and Arne Cheyenne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.

Republic Pictures President Dan Cohen and producer Annabelle Dunne were among the main representatives of William Friedkin’s last film The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial at its posthumous world premiere at the Venice Film Festival over the weekend.
Taking place less than a month after Friedkin died at the age of 87 on August 7, it was an emotional night for both.

Amazon Prime Video has set an Oct. 6 premiere date for its upcoming three-episode docuseries “Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe,” which will spotlight the alleged online love cult run by YouTube influencers Jeff and Shaleia Divine.
Journalist Alice Hines leads the investigative docuseries, which is directed by Marina Zenovich, an Emmy-winner for her “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”
Jeff and Shaleia Divine are the founders the Twin Flames Universe, an online group that promises to match each member with their “soulmate” — going to extreme lengths to do so. “Desperately Seeking Soulmate” is based on Hines’ 2020 Vanity Fair article “Everywhere I Went, They Went With Me, Because They Were on My Phone”: Inside the Always Online, All-Consuming World of Twin Flames Universe, which took a deep dive into the alleged cult (which is still active) that Jeff and Shaleia created online.
The group is particularly controversial for urging members to change their gender identities.

Netflix has launched its second documentary talent fund for emerging filmmakers in the U.K. – and this year the streamer is extending applications to Ireland.
The fund will again be produced by Elisabeth Hopper with support from supervising producer Georgie Yukiko and assistant producer Daisy Ifama.
Open to everyone – even those with no experience – the fund provides filmmakers with a budget of £30,000 as well as guidance from Netflix executives and other industry professionals to enable them to make a documentary short. Among the support offered by Netflix is a series of production workshops covering legal, creative, Hr and finance, among other things.
The theme for this year’s documentaries is “connection.”
The chosen applicants will present their final documentaries at a showcase in early 2024. Applicants must be a resident of the U.K. or Ireland.
Each filmmaker will come away with an 8-10 minute documentary that will be pushed on Netflix U.

Pamela Anderson is ready to tell her side of the story. Following the premiere of Hulu's "Pam & Tommy" series, Anderson has teamed up with Netflix to release her own documentary. Anderson announced the news in a handwritten note on March 2, 2022.
"My life / A thousand imperfections / A million misperceptions / Wicked, wild and lost / Nothing to live up to / I can only surprise you / Not a victim, but a survivor / And alive to tell the real story," she wrote.
In the trailer, which dropped on Jan. 10, Anderson begins by saying in a voiceover, "I wanna take control of the narrative for the first time." The two-minute video features clips from Anderson's life over the years and includes her addressing her leaked sex tape with ex-husband Tommy Lee. Pamela Anderson is a notoriously polarizing figure. She was inescapable in the 90s, and while she had taken a step out of the spotlight since then, she’s the subject of a new documentary, presumably in response to the recent Hulu mini-series Pam & Tommy, which recounted the events of the theft to the spread of the infamous private sex tape with her and then-husband, Tommy Lee.
Netflix has just released the trailer for Pamela, A Love Story. The synopsis of the new documentary reads,
“An intimate and humanizing portrait of one of the world’s most famous blonde bombshells, Pamela, a love story follows the trajectory of Pamela Anderson’s life and career from small town girl to international sex symbol, actress, activist and doting mother.”

Last February, when Hulu chronicled the ’90s sex tape leak of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee through the miniseries “Pam & Tommy,” it received generally positive reviews from critics, but notably lacked the participation of one of its main subjects. Anderson reportedly refused to meet with anyone from the production to offer her point of view on the scandal, which caused a sexist backlash against her at the time.
Now, the “Baywatch” star and iconic model is offering her perspective on her life and career with the upcoming Netflix documentary “Pamela, A Love Story.” The streamer released the trailer for the documentary Tuesday, with the release date set for January 31.

Seven years ago, thousands of people descended upon Jeremy and Kristy Morris’ “Christmas House” in suburban Idaho, where holiday lights, a camel and a 35-member choir singing carols beckoned festive visitors. The holiday event, which served as a fundraiser for children with cancer, was so big that the couple decided that they needed a bigger house with more property for the following year’s festivities. U.K. based director Becky Read chronicles the ensuing neighborhood war and legal battle over the family’s 2015 holiday event – litigation is still pending appeal — in her Apple TV Plus documentary “Twas the Fight Before Christmas.”

Woodstock ’99 Documentary ‘Burn It Down!’ From MRC Non-Fiction Bound for London Festival (Exclusive)
MRC Non-Fiction’s feature documentary “Burn It Down!,” which reexamines the infamous Woodstock ’99 music festival, will have its world premiere at the 65th British Film Institute (BFI) London Film Festival.
The festival took place during the last summer of the 20th century on July 23-25, 1999 and featured performances by Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Insane Clown Posse, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Wyclef Jean and Sheryl Crow among others. It was meant to invoke the spirit of the iconic 1969 Woodstock music festival on its 30th anniversary, but failed to do so.
“Festival organisers cobbled together a poorly conceived rehash of an iconic cultural moment. From security, to basic needs, nothing had been properly planned,” reads the film’s description in the BFI London Film Festival program. “The line-up was a cocktail of 1990s pop rock and peak nu metal angry-white-man bands, including Limp Bizkit and Korn. HBO Max’s Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personality Tests explores the history and growing dangers surrounding the seemingly innocuous Myers–Briggs personality test.
Created by Isabel Briggs Meyers in the early mid-20th century, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator classifies participants into one of sixteen different personality types, all symbolized by four letters – from Intj to Enfj. Tim Travers Hawkins’s doc takes a deep dive into how the personality test evolved from a way to self-identify into a “dangerous tool” in the hands of the powerful.
“It’s being used to make decisions about who’s worthy and who’s unworthy,” an interview subject say in the trailer.
The doc, which will premiere on March 4 on HBO Max, raises a slew of ethical questions demonstrating how some personality tests may do more harm than good – like impacting online dating matches or job prospects. Produced by Dorothy Street Pictures, Persona...

Where would Bruce Lee be if he were still alive today? Would he still be the iconic figure that we remember? If you ask “Be Water” director Bao Nguyen, there’s a chance he might be running for president.
Speaking with TheWrap at Sundance, director Nguyen and producer Julia Nottingham of the ESPN documentary “Be Water” said that if Lee had lived past age 32, he would have nurtured young talent and become an activist. And because he was born in America, politics would not have been out of the question.
“He would’ve been more active in other fields of society, not just film, but also possibly politics. But who knows, Bruce Lee 2020 would’ve been a possibility, because he was born in America,” Nguyen told TheWrap. “He was such an inspiration to many people that I could imagine him going into politics and more realms of activism.”
