It’s not every day that a three-time Oscar nominee for directing decides on a foreign language film to be his next project, but that’s exactly what Stephen Daldry of Billy Elliot, The Hours, and The Reader fame has done. Following in the footsteps of fellow Brit Danny Boyle—whose journey to India for Slumdog Millionaire earned his sole nomination and subsequently an Oscar win—Daldry takes on the novel Trash written by Andy Mulligan about three impoverished boys working as garbage pickers who find something in their nameless city’s landfill that sparks a police manhunt with grave political stakes. Adapted by Richard Curtis and situated in Brazil with corruption regarding its looming Olympics, this effectively tense adventure also delivers the heart and heroism audiences love.

Another Man’s Treasure: Daldry Revisits Themes of Childhood Lost
The muted reception behind the latest film from thrice Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry seems curious, as the Brazilian set Trash, based on an acclaimed 2010 Ya novel by Andy Mulligan, often doesn’t belie the nature of its origins. Sure, it seems somewhat like a bid to follow in the footsteps of fellow Brit Danny Boyle’s third world set and critically acclaimed 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, at least in its rather even keel balance of miserabilism and hopeful yearning, but this audience friendly fodder seems like a victim of underwhelming marketing.
Premiering at the end of 2014 at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, the title gets a bit of added validity thanks to a co-directing credit for first-timer Christian Duurvoort (previously a coach, trainer and actor on several productions by Fernando Meirelles) and actually features the native language of the...

It's an adaptation of a children's book! That's the only card directors Stephen Daldry and Christian Duurvoort can pull out in defense of their infantile "Trash," a film that will make you feel like a kid again, just by how tightly it holds your hands. Richard Curtis (writer/director of "Love Actually," which remains his greatest work) adapts the film's screenplay from Andy Mulligan's novel about a trio of impoverished Brazilian boys who discover a very valuable wallet while working at a local dumpsite. Parents now have a choice of whether they want to buy Mulligan's book (which I haven't read but have seen praised as excellent reading material for 12-16-year-olds), or watch how Daldry, Duurvoort and Curtis have interpreted it for the screen. Judging the film on its own meager merits doesn't really leave much room for choice. If the adventures and egalitarian messages found in the unfortunately-titled "Trash" appeal to you,...

Richard Curtis wrote the screenplay, and the supporting cast includes Martin Sheen, Wagner Moura, and Rooney Mara.
The film’s synopsis is as follows:
When two trash-picking boys from Rio’s slums find a wallet in amongst the daily detritus of their local dump, little do they imagine that their lives are about to change forever. Three kids from a Rio favela are on the trail of corruption in this watchable thriller from Stephen Daldry and Richard Curtis
Nothing to do with Andy Warhol’s movie from 1970. This is a fast-moving and likable children’s adventure with a fiercely grownup angle, mainly because the kids involved have had to grow up quickly. Screenwriter Richard Curtis has adapted a Ya novel by Andy Mulligan, and Stephen Daldry directs. Raphael (Rickson Tevez), Gardo (Eduardo Luís) and Rato (Gabriel Weinstein) are three Brazilian street kids from the favelas, who scratch a living from mountains of trash at the city limits. One day they come upon a wallet containing some cash and, more importantly, photos and documents. It all relates to corrupt politicians and vicious cops who badly want this wallet back. The boys find themselves way out of their depth, but they have some friends in the form of a cantankerous whisky priest,...

The police in Rio de Janeiro “treat poor people like trash.” So says young teen Raphael (Rickson Tevez), in case you hadn’t already grasped the double entendre of the title. Brazil has been thrust into the spotlight of late thanks to last year's World Cup and its forthcoming Olympic Games in 2016, but look past the sunny samba beat and you'll find a country overrun with corruption. It's this Brazil that provides the backdrop for Stephen Daldry's Trash, a fleet-footed adaptation of Andy Mulligan's 2010 novel.
Daldry's film, adapted for the screen by Richard Curtis, follows three Rio street kids - Raphael, Gardo, and Rato - as they stumble across a wallet that leads them on an adventure that could pull them out of poverty. Are we ready for the "Brazilian answer to 'Slumdog Millionaire?'" Rio Film Festival audiences quickly granted "Trash," the latest from "The Hours" director Stephen Daldry, that label after the the film pleased crowds with comedy, child wonder, and "offshore" energy (as trades love to refer to it). Polling attendees after the film's applause-filled premiere, a Variety reporter found many locals agreed that, despite "Trash" not being a true Brazilian movie, "it is not non-Brazilian in the best sense." Many praised it for being more entertaining than most "favela" (or, Latin America slum) dramas. Whether Americans will ever see it is up in the air. Based on Andy Mulligan's young adult novel of the same name, "Trash" tells the story of three “dumpsite boys," who "make a living picking through the mountains of garbage on the outskirts of a large city." Their lives spiral out of control when...

If your film is named Trash, it better be pretty great, or it will instantly be fodder for reviewers upon release. The good news is that Stephen Daldry’s latest effort, starring Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen and three newcomers who could have a bright future in Hollywood, looks terrific, a mix of gritty slum story and inspirational drama. In other words, this could be the new Slumdog Millionaire and it already comes from a director who has danced with Oscar nominations before.
Trash could also easily be up for foreign language film at this year’s Academy Awards, since 80 percent of it is in Portuguese (the rest is in English). Coming from director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader), I have a strong feeling Trash is going to feature heavily when the upcoming Oscar race goes into full swing. Adapted from Andy Mulligan's novel of the same name by Richard Curtis (Love Actually), the movie follows three boys (Rickson Tevez, Luis Eduardo, and Gabriel Weinstein) who survive in the slums of Rio picking through trash. When they find a wallet sought after by some very bad man, they are propelled on the adventure of their young lives, uncovering a dangerous conspiracy along the way. All three are making their screen debuts in the film, playing the three boys who are led on an adventure after finding important items in the landfill where they work.
Though Andy Mulligan’s novel on which the movie was based wasn’t set in a particular location, Daldry (whose other tale of youth, Billy Elliot, is being touted in the trailer) filmed Trash in Rio, and, per Variety, the movie is 80 percent in Portuguese and 20 percent in English.

Andy Mulligan's novel Trash was a hit on release in 2010, shortlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Award for children's books. Now Stephen Daldry has turned it into a film, and here's the first poster to prove it.As you can probably tell from this, it's the story of three young boys who eke out a living from the trash at a dump site. What is Casting Couch? It’s a daily news column that’s full of all sorts of salacious celebrity gossip, so long as you consider actors being cast in movies to be salacious gossip. Read on to get news about new jobs for Dev Patel, Michael K. Williams, Alicia Vikander, and more. There’s always more. Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Cinderella seems to nearly have all of its casting ducks in a row. It’s got Lily James as the title character, Richard Madden as the handsome prince, Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother, Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother, and Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger as the evil stepsisters. There’s one question that’s still at the tip of everyone’s tongue though—who the heck is going to play the Grand Duke, Aka the duplicitous advisor to the King? Well, according to Heat Vision, Branagh is dipping into his Thor cast and negotiating...

Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen are on board for supporting roles in the upcoming film by Stephen Daldry ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"), "Trash." Sheen will play a priest, and Mara an Ngo worker in a story adapted from Andy Mulligan's 2010 novel of the same name. The Third World-set tale centers on three impoverished young boys (newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein) who unearth something dangerous in a city dump. Richard Curtis ("War Horse," "Love Actually," and the upcoming Rachel McAdams-Domhnall Gleeson starrer "About Time") has penned the adaptation. This marks the first time since Daldry's helming debut, 2000's "Billy Elliott," writes Guy Lodge at HitFix, that a Daldry film hasn't been scheduled to open during awards season. "Trash" begins filming in Rio next month, and Universal is eyeing a May 2014 release. Mara has David Lowery's Western "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" coming out in August,...

The story follows three boys in a third world country who scrape a living by picking through trash. One day they find a leather bag, the contents of which plunge them into a terrifying adventure, pitting their wits against corruption and authority to right a wrong. Now the cast has just gained some big names with Martin Sheen (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Rooney Mara (Side Effects) taking supporting roles. Since the news was announced in 2011, Deadline reports newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein have been cast as the three young leads. In addition, rising star Wagner Moura (who will be next seen in Elysium) and Brazilian actor Selton Mello also have roles in the...

Stephen Daldry and Working Title's take on Trash, a children's novel set on the rubbish dumps of the Third World, has added Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara to its roster. No word on who they'll be playing in the crime-and-poverty thriller, but we hope Sheen will be kindly and avuncular for at least portions of the movie.Richard Curtis, not content with directing the upcoming time-travel romance About Time, adapted Andy Mulligan’s recently-published novel. The book follows three boys in Behala, West Bengal, who survive by scavenging in rubbish mounds, but filming is scheduled for Brazil, so expect a shift in locales to the terrain explored by Lucy Walker's Waste Land. Regardless of location, Trash still rates highly on the Slumdog Millio-metre we've hastily cobbled together from bits of sticky-back plastic and this arrow made of old loo rolls. When the boys, Raphael, Gardo and Rat (played by newbies Rickson Tevez,...

• Hopefully Rooney Mara (Side Effects) and Martin Sheen (The Departed) will get a chance to trade Terrence Malick stories when they begin filming Trash in Rio De Janeiro next month. The two actors have signed on to star in the adaptation of Andy Mulligan’s 2010 young adult novel about three homeless boys living in an intentionally ambiguous “third world” country in the near future who discover something in a trash heap worth protecting. Mara will play an Ngo worker and Sheen is set for the part of Father Julliard. Rickson Teves, Eduardo Luis, and Gabriel Weinstein will make their film debuts as the three boys.

Wow, we guess it really was 2011 that Stephen Daldry's "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" hit theaters (our review here), and while he's been quiet on the cinematic front he's still been very busy. Daldry was a producer for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2012 Summer London Olympics but his next movie has been cooking up for a while. Way back in the spring of 2011 it was revealed that Daldry was going to direct an adaptation of Andy Mulligan's book "Trash," with a script from Richard Curtis ("Love Actually," "About Time"). And unlike most movies that sit around for a couple of years, this one has now started to press forward. Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen and Wagner Moura are now on board the picture, with the wheels moving full speed and cameras slated to roll fairly soon. This does carry a whiff of being an Important Movie. The story...

Richard Curtis -- who wrote "Four Weddings and a Funeral, "Bridget Jones's Diary" and directed "Love Actually" and "Pirate Radio" -- has much to celebrate with his adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's "War Horse" hitting theaters later this month, but he's not taking any time off. He's already hard at work on his next adaptation of another children's book by a British author, this time to be directed by Stephen Daldry for Working Title. Andy Mulligan's second novel is called "Trash," but to Curtis, it's pure gold. "It's a beautiful book," Curtis told The Playlist when in New York this past week to promote "War Horse." The story concerns three street kids -- Raphael, Gardo, and Rat -- who have no homes, no parents, no money, and no education. They live in an unnamed third world country and survive by picking through a mostly human waste-filled garbage dump on the outskirts.

Andy Mulligan's "Trash" novel will be adapted by Stephen Daldry and Richard Curtis for Working Title Films and Kris Thykier's PeaPie Films. Trash is a contemporary thriller set in the Third World and tells of three boys who make a living by looking rubbish mounds. One day they discover a leather bag and the contents plunge them into a terrifying adventure which tests their wits against corruption, in order to right a terrible wrong. "Trash" was published last fall in the U.K. and the U.S. by David Fickling Books. "From the opening pages of 'Trash,' I knew that I had discovered one of the most thrilling, dynamic and inspiring books I'd ever come across," said Thykier.
