Hello, everyone! It seems like there’s a constant supply of genre films coming out these days, which can make it hard to keep up with everything. Here’s a look at my thoughts on two recent indie projects, Hanna Bergholm’s Hatching and The Aviary from Jennifer Raite and Chris Cullari.
Enjoy!
The Hatching: As far as directorial debuts go, director Hanna Bergholm has done a phenomenal job of quickly establishing herself as one of the most intriguing new talents to watch in the genre space with Hatching. A harrowing exploration of the horrors and pressure that many (if not most) young folks experience throughout adolescence, screenwriter Ilja Rautsi does a great job of crafting a story that seamlessly meshes psychological horror with an unconventional creature feature, resulting in one of the most unique viewing experiences that I’ve had in 2022.

Two women, Jillian and Blair, flee into the New Mexican desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult. Consumed by fear and paranoia, they can’t shake the feeling that they are being followed by its leader, a man as seductive as he is controlling. With their supplies dwindling and their senses starting to fail them, they are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head?
With Malin Akerman’s Jillian saying the cult leader they’re running from wanted to carve his cults “logo” into her flesh and the other woman, Blair (Lorenza Izzo) seemingly unaware of herself doing a cult until it was too late, The Aviary screams out that its plot is a riff on the scandal surrounding Alison Mack...

"The Aviary" hits theaters, digital, and on demand on April 29, 2022. The thriller stars Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, and Chris Messina, and follows two women who flee into the New Mexican desert to escape a sinister cult. It's a low-budget cult thriller that features a fantastic turn from Akerman, and a particularly chilling performance from Messina.
I got a chance to chat with writer/directors Chris Cullari and Jennifer Raite about the film, where the idea came from, what cults inspired it, and how even jobs can feel like cults sometimes.
I loved the movie, and I loved how you leave a...

Arriving in theaters and on digital platforms everywhere this Friday is the psychological/survival thriller The Aviary from co-writers/co-directors Jennifer Raite and Chris Cullari. The film stars Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, and Chris Messina, and follows two women (Akerman and Izzo) as they make a daring escape from a cult through the treacherous terrain of the New Mexico desert, all while dealing with the lingering effects of their time in the cult that makes it hard for them to determine whether or not the horrors they are experiencing are real.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with both Cullari and Raite about their experiences collaborating on their feature film debut. During our chat, the duo discussed the inspiration behind the story of The Aviary, how the film (scarily) mimics some aspects of modern-day society, working with their cast, utilizing New Mexico as the backdrop for their mind-bending story,...

Freedom is an escape from society’s invisible cages. Thus Seth (Chris Messina) teaches his followers at The Aviary to emancipate themselves from those walls. He serves as their quasi-psychoanalyst conducting what he’s coined “barrier therapy” (or BT), allowing them to open themselves to what they truly want outside of the norms civilization feeds them. And they love him for it. They embrace his teachings and enjoy his hugs while walking lockstep into the New Mexican desert to inhabit his new, fully immersive BT barracks. Outsiders might say Seth is merely leading them from one prison to another, preying upon their weaknesses to interject himself as their God. To hear Jillian (Malin Akerman) and Blair (Lorenza Izzo) talk is to realize those outsiders are correct.
The two have escaped his clutches this time, their awakening arriving courtesy of revelations they could no longer silently live with. Blair was there shorter than Jillian,...

The Aviary Trailer: "Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, and Chris Messina star in this twisted thriller about two women's desperate attempt to flee the clutches of Skylight, an insidious cult.
Trapped at Skylight’s isolated desert campus, The Aviary, Jillian (Akerman), and Blair (Izzo) join forces to make a treacherous escape. Alone in the harsh wilderness, they are consumed by paranoia and unable to shake the feeling that they are being followed by the cult's leader, Seth (Messina), a man as seductive as he is controlling. With supplies dwindling and their senses failing, Jillian and Blair are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head?
The feature directorial debut from Chris Cullari and Jennifer Raite who, as writers and creators, have frequently collaborated with Blumhouse TV on projects and first-look deals, and made a splash with their 2012 Vimeo Staff Pick horror-comedy short The Sleepover.

"Why do you keep talking like him?" Saban Films has revealed the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled The Aviary, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmakers Chris Cullari & Jennifer Raite. This has come out of nowhere, without playing at any film festivals or anywhere else before its opening in April this spring. Two women flee into the New Mexican desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult called "Skylight". Consumed by fear and paranoia, they can't shake the feeling that they are being followed by its leader, a man as seductive as he is controlling. With their supplies dwindling and their senses starting to fail them, they are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head? Starring Malin Akerman, Lorenza Izzo, Chris Messina, and Sandrine Holt. This actually looks like a twisted, mess-with-your-mind film about how much cults can really,...

This week on Operation Kino, we're embarking on a pretty ill-fated affair, as we review Joe Wright's gorgeous new movie Anna Karenina. From there we bring you the newest installment of OpKino Indie, in which Da7e chats with Chris Cullari, Jennifer Raite and Carolyn Jania, the team behind the new short film "The Sleepover," which recently won the Cabin in the Woods/Lionsgate/Vimeo contest. (You can also watch the short at the bottom of this post!) Before any of that, though, there's a lightning round inspired by Joe Wright's career, plus tidbits, in which David loses his legs for Rust and Bone, Patches actually tells you to see Brea king Dawn Part 2, Da7e fills us in on the madness of American Horror Story, and Katey evangelizes for the podcast-listening app Downcast. We end, as always, with your lightning round answers for dessert. Take a listen...

I was a judge at this past September's Fantastic Fest, tackling the horror shorts and in a sea of a lot of gross-out films, the witty The Sleepover really stood out. In the vein of Scream and Behind The Mask, The Sleepover exists in a universe in which slashers are real, and families and babysitters alike know exactly how to deal. Well, everyone except for the new kid in town.
