C-span coverage of Congress turned into a Jerry Springer-like spectacle of name-calling and insults on Thursday, as a verbal jab lobbed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-ga) triggered an extended period of outcry from several Democrats on the House Oversight Committee.
The purpose of the hearing was to consider whether to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt, a polarizing proposal that quickly made the proceedings raucous. But things got especially chaotic after Greene took a swipe at Rep. Jasmine Crockett over her “fake eyelashes.”
Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-ny) then stepped in to protest Greene’s remarks, telling her, “How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person.”
Greene responded, “Are your feelings hurt?”
“Oh, girl. Baby girl. Don’t even play,” Ocasio-Cortez responded.
Greene said that she would strike her words, but she declined to apologize.

New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez (D) argued that the gold bars and cash found in his home during an FBI raid were a result of “generational trauma.”
According to an indictment disclosed in federal court, Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez, were charged with violating corruption and bribery laws. The couple allegedly engaged in a scheme in 2018 to aid the Egyptian government.
The indictment states that Menendez, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, which were paid in cash, gold bars, home mortgage payments, luxury vehicles and “other things of value.”
During the search of the New Jersey senator’s home in 2022, federal agents revealed that they found hidden cash and gold bars. Investigators also found over $480,000 in cash hidden in envelopes and clothing. In addition, $70,000 was found in Nadine’s safe deposit box. An examination of the...

On Sunday, Politico published a story suggesting that foundations tied to several top Democratic donors have been funding the pro-Palestine protest groups dogging President Joe Biden wherever he goes. “Pro-Palestianian protesters are backed by a surprising source: Biden’s biggest donors,” read the headline.
The story quickly went viral — Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), for instance, posted on X that the piece confirmed “anti-Israel astroturfing.” Fox News cited the report to write that “President Biden’s biggest Democratic donors are also funding some anti-Israel protests that have taken over college campuses.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a ban on lab-grown meat to “save our beef” from the “global elite” and its “authoritarian plans.”
The newly enacted law is the first of its kind in the nation and prohibits the sale and distribution of lab-grown meat in Florida. Similar initiatives are also being implemented in Alabama, Arizona and Tennessee.
DeSantis declared, “Florida is fighting back against the global elite’s plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs.”
Lab-grown, or “cultivated,” meat was approved for consumption in the United States in 2022. The production process involves extracting cells from an animal and nourishing them with essential nutrients like proteins, sugars, and fats. The final product is genetically identical to conventionally sourced meat. Various studies indicate that consumption of cultivated meat can significantly benefit the environment, reducing carbon emissions, water usage and land requirements compared to conventionally produced meat.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) called out pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses, calling them as “pup tents” for the militant group Hamas.
A “pup tent” is a tent used by soldiers during war. It is speculated that the name originated from the Civil War when the tent was called the “dog house,” then evolved into “pup tents.”
The protests across college campuses are calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas War and demanding that the U.S. stop sending military aid to Israel. Many of these students set up tents and camps in the name of these protests, against school policies and administrators’ wishes.
“Now, of course, it’s a great American value to protest, but I don’t believe living in a pup tent for Hamas is helpful,” Fetterman told The Hill. “I will say this, that it’s very clear, there is a very germ of antisemitism in all of these protests.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) called anti-Israel protestors “a——” in response to progressives who have attacked Israel. Amidst the Gaza War crisis, protests have launched across the United States including brand boycotts and marches in major cities.
“It is not appropriate or legal or helpful to advance your argument if you show up in a Starbucks with a bullhorn and start yelling at people,” Fetterman said in an interview with Fox Digital. Starbucks is one of the major corporations that progressives have boycotted in support of Palestine.
Fetterman added that these protests don’t “make you noble.” Although Fetterman criticized these protests, the Pennsylvania senator clarified that he supports the right to protest and to have differing opinions.
“It’s very American to protest and to do that in the appropriate way,” he said. “I absolutely support that.”

A group of Democratic lawmakers is proposing new legislation that would provide $1 billion annually to the nonprofit professional theater industry still struggling to recover from the Covid pandemic.
The bill, called the Supporting Theater and the Arts to Galvanize the Economy (Stage) Act of 2024, has been introduced in Congress by Peter Welch (D-Vt.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Jack Reed (D-r.I.) & Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (Or-01). The Stage Act proposes that the government provide $1 billion annually for five years in grants administered through the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
The money would be used to assist theaters in “keeping their doors open.”
The proposed legislation, spearheaded by Welch, is expected to be introduced today, though the bill will face an uphill battle in a divided Congress.
A description of the legislation – read it here – indicates that despite “the extensive economic contributions, this critical artform is struggling to survive in a post-pandemic world.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D), once known as a progressive, has been taking more centrist positions lately. In a new interview, he declared, “I am not woke.”
When questioned about squatters’ rights, the senator told The New York Post, “Squatters have no rights. How can you even pretend that this is anything other than you’re just breaking the law?”
Squatters occupy a property they do not own or have a legal right to live on. Though trespassing is illegal, squatting and squatters’ rights have been an ongoing debate for politicians and homeowners.
Fetterman was “horrified” when he read an article about a New York City couple sued by squatters who unlawfully moved into their duplex priced at $930,000.
“It’s wild that if you go away on a long trip, for 30 days, and someone breaks into your home, and suddenly they have rights,” Fetterman said. “This is crazy. Like if somebody stole your car,...

A group pushing for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny an application submitted by Fox for the renewal of one of its television station licenses has joined calls by federal lawmakers urging the agency to act on the matter.
On Monday, the Media and Democracy (Mad) Project said it supports a letter sent by Senators Robert Casey and John Fetterman (both representing Pennsylvania in Congress) that urges the agency to act on the matter after several months of deliberation and public comment.

The lawmakers, Senators Robert Casey and John Fetterman, say the FCC have collected public comment concerning the license renewal application for Fox-owned Wtxf (Channel 29) for six months, suggesting that is plenty of time for the federal agency to decide if the station is worth keeping around as a licensed broadcaster.
Last year, a grassroots organization called the Media and Democracy (Mad) Project filed a challenge at the FCC following a routine application by Fox to renew the station’s license. Many other Republican candidates have suspending their campaigns this cycle, but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ exit inspired some pretty biting and snarky reactions today, coming from other politicos and some celebrities.
The reaction may be due to the fact that DeSantis focused so much of his campaign on the culture wars, taking on The Walt Disney Co. even though it is one of the largest employers in the Sunshine State. Or it was due to the fact that DeSantis and a SuperPAC supporting campaign poured tens of millions of dollars into the race, only to finish a distant second in Iowa and not even make it to the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary. Or it was that his campaign was the source of fodder for late-night comics and commentators, including his glitchy Twitter campaign kickoff and attention to his foot attire.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, ending a faltering bid where he tried to cast himself as a Trump-like candidate in a race where so much of the Republican base ended up preferring the real thing.
In a videotaped message posted this afternoon, DeSantis said that he was suspending his campaign and endorsing Donald Trump.

DeSantis’ exit leaves just Trump and former Un ambassador Nikki Haley in the race, with Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary likely to show whether the bid for the GOP nomination is all but over.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

MSNBC revealed “breaking news” regarding the newest indictment of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey). Unfortunately, this happened while his daughter and MSNBC anchor, Alicia Menendez, was hosting the MSNBC show Deadline: White House.
Alicia announced this “breaking news” during the last five minutes of Deadline: White House‘s Tuesday edition. She was filling in for the show’s host, Nicole Wallace.
The senator was indicted in September 2023 on charges of bribery, and he pleaded not guilty.
Federal government officials stated that he and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, took bribes in the form of cash, gold bars and a convertible. Prosecutors accused the senator of relying on his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to further the Egyptian government’s interests.
The Department of Justice also claimed that the senator was given luxury wristwatches and Formula One tickets, which he got in exchange for having promoted the Qatari government.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) openly admitted he engaged in “dark conversations” with himself about self-harm before he hit “the emergency brake” and sought treatment for his battle with depression.
Fetterman, who is in his first term, spoke candidly about his experiences in an introspective interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, which was recorded prior to its broadcast on Sunday.
In February 2023, he admitted himself to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, as he felt he had nowhere else to turn.
Fetterman expressed doubts about his political future, especially when news of his treatment and whereabouts became public.
He feared that this revelation could mark the end of his career. At the time he sought treatment for clinical depression, Fetterman was also contending with the aftermath of a stroke he had suffered in May 2022 while he campaigned for one of the Senate’s highly contested seats.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) finds himself increasingly isolated from the progressive faction of his party, and he has grown concerned that some on the left harbor ill wishes toward him.
“What I have found out over the last couple years is that the right, and now the left, are hoping that I die,” Fetterman told the New York Times. “There are ones that are rooting for another blood clot. They have both now been wishing that I die.”
Fetterman suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot during his 2022 Senate campaign. While he still experiences an auditory processing disorder, his condition has significantly improved.
Fetterman has faced vehement criticism, primarily from the right, since the start of his campaign. He sought treatment for depression earlier this year.
Critics from the right have spread baseless claims, such as the suggestion that he has a “body double,” or that he is unable to fulfill his duties.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) called for the expulsion of fellow Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) from the U.S. Senate.
Fetterman told The View that Menendez was more of a “Senator from Egypt, not New Jersey.”
“Sen. Menendez – he needs to go,” Fetterman said.
Fetterman referred to the accusations made by the federal prosecutors, claiming that Menendez participated in a bribery scheme that used his influence to benefit Egypt.
Menendez is now facing charges that accuse him of being a foreign agent for Egypt. Menendez’s trial is due to start in May.
Fetterman called Menendez’s actions “serious” and “sinister.” He then compared the situation to the removal of former Rep. George Santos (R-New York).
The House Ethics Committee conducted an investigation and made a formal report. Santos was found to have spent his campaign funds on personal trips, Botox and other personal items unrelated to his campaign.

Disgraced ex-congressman George Santos may have been expelled from the House of Representatives on Dec. 1 by a vote of 311-114 — but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story for the alleged serial grifter and sometimes drag queen from New York. HBO Films has already optioned The Fabulist, a book about Santos’ rise and fall, for adaptation, with Frank Rich and Mike Makowsky (HBO’s Bad Education) attached to executive produce and Makowsky set to write. As for Santos, public opinion seems to think he’ll find a future on Dancing with the Stars — so much so that the show trended on X alongside news of his historic expulsion.
Asked if he would consider competing on the show that has featured the likes of Sean Spicer and House majority leader Tom DeLay (indicted on charges of conspiring to violate political fundraising law), Santos told reporters, “Today, I...

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) made a swipe at his 2022 campaign rival Mehmet Oz on Halloween night.
He tweeted a picture of a veggie tray with the caption, “Wild and crazy evening in with… crudités” and a pained emoji face.
Oz, a celebrity doctor endorsed by Donald Trump in the race, has been the subject of much mockery for his comments about “crudité” in April of last year.
In a video that attacked President Joe Biden over inflation, Oz made his way around a grocery store and claimed he wanted “vegetables for crudité.”
Aside from his pretentious phrasing for the appetizer more commonly known as veggies and dip, Oz got the name of the grocery store wrong when he said he was in “Wegner’s,” a combination of the names of two Pennsylvania chains, Wegman’s and Redner’s.

Oprah Winfrey has disputed the claim made by Sen. Mitt Romney in an upcoming biography that she floated the idea of a joint presidential ticket in order “to save the country” from a Trump reelection.
A spokesperson for Winfrey said that she was never considering a run for the White House in 2020. “In November 2019, Ms. Winfrey called Senator Romney to encourage him to run on an Independent ticket,” a spokesperson for Winfrey stated. “She was not calling to be part of the ticket and was never considering running herself.”

Oprah Winfrey Disputes Mitt Romney’s Claim That She Asked to Join Him on a Unity Presidential Ticket
Oprah Winfrey is pushing back on a claim made by Sen. Mitt Romney in a new biography.
A spokesperson for Winfrey tells The Hollywood Reporter that, despite a claim in a new book, Winfrey was never considering a run for president in 2020 and did not ask Romney to join her on a ticket.
“In November 2019, Ms. Winfrey called Senator Romney to encourage him to run on an Independent ticket,” the spokesperson says. “She was not calling to be part of the ticket and was never considering running herself.”
In the upcoming book Romney: A Reckoning, by veteran political journalist McKay Coppins, Utah Republican Romney recalls receiving a call from the media mogul, who is a Democrat, claiming that they should form a unity ticket “to save the country.”
Axios first reported on the excerpt from the book Monday.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) said that America “is not sending their best and brightest” to represent the country in Congress.
“Sometimes you literally just can’t believe like, these people are making the decisions that are determining the government here. It’s actually scary,” he said during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“Before the government almost shut down, I mean, it came down to a couple of hours. I was in my office, and they finally came over from the House. And they’re like, ‘Ok, well, this has to be unanimous in the Senate.’ And out of the 99 of us, if one single one of us would have said no, the whole government would have shut down,” Fetterman said.

Additional charges have been leveled against Sen. Bob Menendez, who was indicted last month on allegations of corruption and bribery.
A superseding indictment, unsealed Thursday, further charges the New Jersey Democrat with having “provided sensitive U.S. Government information and took other steps that secretly aided the Government of Egypt.”

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is facing a rapidly growing number of calls from his Democratic colleagues to resign from office following a damning indictment on charges of corruption and bribery.
On Wednesday, Menendez pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment in Manhattan court.
The indictment, which was made public on Friday, was initially met with widespread silence from Senate Democrats, save for Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman, who on Saturday called for Menendez’s resignation. “Senator Menendez should resign,” he wrote. “He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence,...

Sen. Bob Menendez declared on Monday that he did nothing wrong and that he plans to remain in office in the wake of a federal indictment on corruption and bribery charges.
The Democrat from New Jersey insisted in his first public comments following the indictment that “prosecutors get it wrong sometimes,” and that “when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I still will be the New Jersey senior senator.”
The senator also attempted to defend himself against some of the evidence presented by prosecutors in his indictment.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) is having some fun with conspiracy theories about him by selling merchandise at his campaign store.
A shirt that reads “John Fetterman’s Body Double” is up for sale at his campaign website for $35, which references a conspiracy theory that suggests he has numerous clones that fill in for him at the Capitol.
The conspiracy started a month ago mainly on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, where he said he “lost a bet with Karl,” who is his teenage son, in a post with him wearing a mustache and glasses rather than his signature goatee. With some thinking he looked different, a conspiracy that Fetterman had clones filling in for him spread like wildfire across the web.

Senator John Fetterman has been spending his week trolling Republican colleagues on X, and “The View” host Alyssa Farah Griffin isn’t impressed. According to the ABC host, it’s very “Marjorie Taylor Greene-like behavior,” and all politicians need to stop indulging in it.
Following Chuck Schumer’s loosening of the Senate dress code, Republicans have been in a tizzy, with some Democrats agreeing that there should be some decorum in clothing on the Senate floor. Of course, Fetterman is not among them, joking on X that he would “save democracy” by wearing a suit to work, if Ukraine could get funding.
The day before, Fetterman trolled Lauren Boebert on X, after she was kicked out of a production of “Beetlejuice” for vaping, causing a disturbance, and being handsy with her date for the evening. “I figure if I take up vaping and grabbing the hog during a live musical,...

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) announced that staff for the chamber’s Sergeant-at-Arms will officially stop enforcing a dress code on the Senate floor.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) can be credited with inspiring the change, as he has been wearing hoodies and gym shorts after returning from medical leave in April and voting from doorways to avoid being penalized for his casual attire.
“There has been an informal dress code that was enforced,” said Schumer in a statement. “Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit.”
It is unclear if the previous dress code was actually written down anywhere, but Schumer stated that staff will no longer fine senators for their clothing choices.
Some conservative members of the chamber disagreed with Schumer’s announcement.

A month ago, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania posted a selfie to X, formerly Twitter, that would shock America — and kick off weeks of feverish, unfounded claims that he had been replaced by a lookalike. The caption read, “Lost a bet to Karl.” The outcome of that wager with his teenage son was immediately obvious: instead of the trademark goatee he’d sported from his earliest days as a national political figure, he had… a mustache.

Senator Susan Collins is threatening to wear a bikini to work. Why? Because Chuck Schumer has done something that threatens the very fabric of the republic: relaxing the Senate’s dress code in a move that would allow lawmakers like Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman to embrace their affinity for casual clothes without violating protocol.
On Friday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-n.Y.) officially changed the rules around what is considered appropriate attire for members of the upper chamber, instructing the Sergeant at Arms to stop enforcing guidelines requiring business attire on the floor.

The entertainment industry’s most vulnerable workers are increasingly unable to feed themselves amid a historic double strike with no clear end in sight, according to non-profits tasked with addressing the food insecurity crisis. They describe Hollywood’s ongoing work stoppage — prompted by the contractual impasse between the writing and acting guilds on one side and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on the other — as a humanitarian emergency broadly affecting the community, not just striking union members.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, which runs pantries for those in need throughout the county, attributes a meaningful portion of its nine percent uptick in year-over-year distribution to the strikes’ impact. “When income stops immediately, the demand rises very rapidly,” explains chief development officer Roger Castle.

Update: The Senate cleared the debt ceiling bill late on Thursday, the final hurdle for the U.S. to avoid default on its debt with a deadline approaching in just a matter of days.
The bill, which passed 63-36, now goes to President Joe Biden. It ends the most precarious standoff over the debt limit since 2011. Forty four Democrats, 17 Republicans and two independents voted in favor; four Democrats, 31 Republicans and one independent voted against.
“Senators from both parties voted to protect our heard-earned economic progress and prevent a first-ever default,” Biden said. “No one gets everything they want in a negotiation, but make no mistake: this bipartisan agreement is a big win for our economy and the American people.”
The president is planning an Oval Office address at 7 p.m. Et on Friday.
Senate leaders issued a statement saying that the legislation would not limit their ability to appropriate emergency funds for the military.

Friday’s episode of “Morning Joe” took a somber turn thanks to a snippet of Joe Scarborough’s upcoming interview with Senator John Fetterman. Holding back tears, Fetterman opened up about his recent struggles with depression and emphasized that this was not a partisan issue.
