In the past decade, our popular culture has become increasingly interested in post-apocalyptic stories—perhaps because, as writer Laurie Penny theorized in The New Statesman way back in 2014, it can increasingly feel like we are all living in a dystopia on the verge of collapse. Fka USA, out today from Flatiron Books, is the latest in a line of pop culture stories trying to get the post-apocalypse dystopia right, which is another way of saying it is the latest in a line of pop culture stories trying to get now right.

Avenger: Endgame's lack of Stucky is one of few character-driven missteps in a movie that acts as Captain America's concluding chapter.
The following contains A Lot of Avengers: Endgame spoilers. We have a completely spoiler free review right here.
It’s an understatement to say that Avengers: Endgame has a lot of storylines to address. Even with its three-hour runtime, it was never going to get to everything. That being said, it does a pretty damn good job, checking in with most of the characters, themes, and plot points that have been important in the first decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, for a movie that is so much about Steve Rogers, and that ostensibly wraps up his story forever, Endgame is disappointingly short on the Stucky—aka the relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, a dynamic that has been foundational to the Captain America...

With Sam Taylor-Johnson directing, an artist who knows a thing about female desire, the film of the hit book could surprise us all
Remember Fifty Shades of Grey? The tale of virginal Anastasia Steele and her indoctrination into the world of Bdsm by billionaire sadist Christian Grey is now stuff of literary legend. A record number of books were sold, libidos liberated, baffling articles written and the feminist credentials of the fantasies described and of Grey's behaviour were dissected with such relentless intensity that it felt like its own punishment from Grey's "red room of pain". Crazy times. Now Fifty Shades is back, like Grey himself touching down in his ostentatious helicopter. You don't escape that easily. With crushing inevitability, there's going to be a movie. That's going to be terrible, isn't it? A film based on a smutty book that now litters the racks of every last charity shop.

Geek culture is growing, and the makers of Game of Thrones, Catwoman and Grimdark novels must realise they're not just catering for a bearded audience
As a fan of fantasy fiction, it's been entertaining watching mainstream cultural critics' baffled responses to Game of Thrones, which has surprised many by becoming the biggest show on TV this year. Gina Bellafante of the New York Times was among the first to come a cropper when she made the rash statement that no woman could ever enjoy the show, only to find herself hounded across the internet by legions of female fantasy fans.
Last week, neo-socialist enfant terrible Laurie Penny weighed in on the show with a confused rant of its own epic proportions, which seemed to conclude that despite being violent, sexist and racist it was Ok to enjoy the show in the same detached ironic way you might enjoy, say, a political protest.

After Dustin Hoffman helped save a jogger's life in Hyde Park, we ask: which other stars have acted heroically in real life?
Dustin Hoffman has been praised for his actions after he came to the rescue of a jogger who suffered a heart attack in London's Hyde Park.
As various news sources reported on Tuesday, the star called the emergency services after 27-year-old lawyer Sam Dempster fell to the ground. The actor tended to the stricken man and stayed with him while an ambulance crew arrived and performed CPR.
We're used to seeing Hollywood actors perform heroic deeds in films – including Hoffman himself in the 1992 comedy Accidental Hero – but it's much rarer to hear about them in real life. By coming to the runner's aid, Hoffman has joined a short list of stars who could conceivably have a claim to being a hero.
But which other stars have performed heroically?...

Ryan Gosling looked hot yesterday when he arrived off a late flight at Lax. He walked right by a bunch of excited photographers and then hopped in his car, ready to reunite with girlfriend Eva Mendes. Eva spent the weekend on the West Coast herself, and was seen Saturday stocking up on groceries ahead of Ryan's return. Ryan, who spent much of the last few months working on Only God Forgives in Thailand, has been in NYC as of late. He encountered some potentially unwanted attention in the Big Apple - Ryan saved British journalist Laurie Penny from being hit by a car, and she later tweeted about his heroic act. A real human being... and a real hero. That's just who Ryan Gosling is. The Hollywood star always seems to be patrolling New York City looking for someone in need of help, and last week he came to the rescue of a U.K. journalist after she almost stepped out into oncoming traffic on 6th Avenue. Laurie Penny, a writer for The Independent and The Guardian, tweeted to her followers last Tuesday that she "literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened." It turns out that she was looking the wrong way, as many U.K. visitors do, and almost stepped out in front of a cab before Ryan Gosling pulled her back. What a guy. It isn't the first time Gosling has been credited with a heroic act. Last summer, a YouTube video went viral that showed Gosling breaking up a...

Turns out the ingenue who was "saved" the other day by superhero Ryan Gosling is actually a badass in her own right. Laurie Penny is a successful journalist who also happens to have written a book called Meat Market: Female Flesh Under Capitalism. So as you might imagine, she had some interesting things to say on Gawker about Feminist Ryan Gosling saving her. "Everybody needs to calm down about Ryan Gosling saving me from a speeding car… I was thinking about an article I'm writing about birth control and the importance of reproductive freedom to women's rights, and I didn't remember to look the right way. An actor happened to be passing and stopped me from getting run over by a car. I said 'thank you.' And that was that." Not that she's claiming it wasn't kind of awesome. "[...]...

Not only is he one of Hollywood's hottest actors, but Ryan Gosling is now a superhero after saving a British journalist, Laurie Penny, from the path of an oncoming taxi on a NYC street on Wednesday.
"I literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. That actually just happened," the journalist tweeted.
This isn't the first time Ryan has used his superpowers. Last year he was caught on camera breaking up a street fight in Manhattan.

Only God Forgives powered Ryan Gosling a real life superhero
If you listen closely, you’ll hear swooning right around the world. Yes, swooning has a sound. Listen for it any minute now.
If anyone doubts that the man everyone’s girlfriend would hands-down leave your worthless arse for, actor Ryan Gosling, is not in actual fact, some sort of street prowling, crime fighting vigilante in his downtime, well, listen up. The facts speak for themselves.
Last year he swooped in like some tank top-wearing, shopping bag-wielding Batman and stopped a fight in the middle of an NYC street, much to the squealing delight of some screwball who was filming the incident for her own amusement (Gosling would not approve of your behaviour, ma’am! He is Canadian!).
It is worth remembering that Gosling has been training quite intensively in Muay Thai for his role in Winding Refn’s upcoming crimefest Only God Forgives,...

London, Apr 5: Ryan Gosling, who is surely on his way to superhero status, saved the life of one very grateful British journalist in New York City on Wednesday.
Laurie Penny, who writes for The Independent and The Guardian, forgot that cars drive on the right side of the road in the Us, and very nearly walked into oncoming traffic.
The 31-year-old Canadian heartthrob pulled her back just seconds before she was hit by a taxi cab.
Penny couldn't resist writing about her near-death experience and ensuing save on her Twitter page.

Breaking news: Ryan Gosling is actually Batman. Or Superman. Or some kind of insanely hot superhero. Aside from breaking up fights on the streets of New York, the heartthrob also reportedly saves people's lives when faced with a possible collision. Swoon. Laurie Penny, a British news writer, was about to get hit by a taxi cab on 6th Avenue in New York City when—bam—Gosling allegedly saved the day. Well, that's how Penny's tweets described the event. Ryan's reps haven't confirmed he was her savior. (Though wouldn't that totally be like a hero not to want to talk about it?) But Gosling's not the only celeb to get in the face of danger. Months after breaking up a fight in New York City, Ryan Gosling is now credited with saving the life of Laurie Penny, a British writer for The Guardian, The Independent and other newspapers. According to Penny, the actor stopped her from walking directly into a speeding taxi in New York. "I literally, Literally, just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened," she wrote on Twitter. "I was crossing 6th avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi." Apparently Gosling didn't stop to identify himself, because Penny had to confirm with several witnesses that it was indeed him. Gosling's publicist has yet to make a comment.

Penny Tweeted, "I literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened. I was crossing 6th avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi."
Apparently it wasn't this lucky Penny's first time getting saved by a pedestrian, as she claims several other "more anonymous New Yorkers" have done the same for her during her sojourn in the States, and makes reference to a...

So, we have no verification of this story, but every reason (and desire) to believe it: British journalist Laurie Penny tweeted last night that she was “Literally” saved from being run over by a car in New York by Ryan Gosling.
“I literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened,” Penny wrote. “I was crossing 6th avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi.”
She wasn’t exactly sure it was famed street-fight-breaker-upper Gosling, but a woman next to her confirmed it, saying, “You lucky bitch.”
Penny is a writer for the New Statesman, The Nation, The Guardian and other reputable outlets, so she doesn’t sound like the type who would make this up.
Gosling was most recently snapped in L.A. with girlfriend Eva Mendes...

Ryan Gosling reportedly saved an ambling British journalist from being hit by a New York City taxi Tuesday night.
Laurie Penny-- a reporter for The New Statesman, The Independent, The Guardian, Al-Jazeera, and The Nation-- tweeted that she began to cross 6th Avenue while looking the other way (because Brits drive on the left side of the road) when Ryan 'Hey Girl' Gosling screamed, "Hey, watch out!" and grabbed her before she could be hit by an oncoming taxi.
Penny was able to confirm Baby Goose's identity when a woman next to her said, "you lucky bitch."
Of course, this is not the first time Gosling has been a "Real Hero" in New York. Since moving to the city this past summer, he also broke up a fight on St. Mark's Place between two men while wearing a tank top (watch video here).

Hey girl, I am going to save your life today.
Less than a year after Ryan Gosling was seen breaking up a fight in New York City, the "Drive" star has apparently played hero once again.
Yesterday, the actor saved British writer Laurie Penny from being hit by a car, this according to her Twitter account.
"I literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened," Penny tweeted. "I was crossing 6th avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi."
According to the New York Observer, there is still no confirmation of whether this was really Gosling or not. (His publicists have not yet to respond to requests for comment.)

Ryan Gosling is extremely committed to his campaign to make you love him. You want a sweetheart? He gives you The Notebook. You want a badass? He gives you Drive. You want a crack addict who still tries to make a difference in the lives of inner-city schoolchildren? He gives you Half Nelson. (But also, you probably shouldn't want a crack addict. You're just asking for trouble.) But lots of movie stars knock it out of the park in varied roles that make people swoon; that's kind of their job. Only Gosling went above and beyond our expectations for awesome movie star when, last year, he physically broke up a street fight in New York City with a minimum of fuss. And it looks like he wasn't finished literally stepping in to prevent trouble! Because according to these tweets from journalist Laurie Penny, Gosling literally [...]...

"Hey girl, you in danger."
I imagine that's kind of how the conversation went last night as Ryan Gosling saved a woman from being struck by a cab in NYC. Laurie Penny, a British writer, Tweeted, "I literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened."
Ryan Gosling - Sexiest Man Alive?
"I was crossing 6th avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi. Identity of no-idea-if-actually-a-manarchist-but-definitely-a-decent-sort Ryan Gosling confirmed by girl near me, who said 'you lucky bitch.'"
2011 - The Year of Ryan Gosling
Laurie was quick to squash one of the many fantasies that have risen from this exchange by adding, "He did not say 'hey, girl.' He said 'hey, watch out!'"
Fans will recall that this isn't the first time Ryan has been a good city Samaritan -- back...

Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling turned real-life action hero by saving a journalist who was almost mowed down by a taxi.
British writer Laurie Penny was left stunned after The Notebook star swooped in to save her when she stepped into a busy New York City street on Tuesday.
Penny immediately took to her Twitter.com page to share her lucky escape with followers and to hail Gosling a hero.
She tweeted, "I literally, Literally just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened. I was crossing 6th Avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi... He said, 'Hey, watch out!'"

Ryan Gosling gets a lot of press around his almost-too-perfect capabilities, and frankly, he hasn't done much to disprove it. Between breaking up a fight last year, proving that beards are forever hot and creating a seemingly awesome documentary about political apathy and Occupy, Gosling can't go wrong.
And now, he's done something even better -- he's actually saved a woman's life. As reported on Twitter earlier this evening, Gosling grabbed British journalist Laurie Penny as she walked into the road and was almost hit by a taxi while looking the wrong way.
But we can tell it no better than the lucky lady herself:
Our sentiments exactly.
Now here's hoping there's no sudden rush of people "accidentally" walking into the streets in the hopes that Gosling can save them. Because after all, the man can't be everywhere at once -- or can he?
See: Take a look at Ryan Gosling...

Amy Monaghan, first known to most of us as the cinetrix, is high-tailing it from Boston, where she presented a paper at Scms, to New York for this afternoon's launch of the new issue of Black Clock, the literary journal edited by novelist Steve Erickson. You've got to love the promo blurb they've written for themselves:
In a movie issue like no other, Black Clock 15 features Geoff Nicholson's meeting of two film pioneers in "Buster Keaton: The Warhol Years," David Thomson's journey up the Amazon with Warren Beatty, and Anthony Miller's history of the cinema — from Dw Griffith's adaptation of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises (presenting Louise Brooks as Lady Brett) to Don Siegel's 60s cult B-movie Bonnie and Clyde with Tuesday Weld and Clint Eastwood, to the 2010 Academy Award-winning portrayal by Chris Farley of silent comedic actor Fatty Arbuckle in Milos Forman's The Life of the Party.
