The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed the coveted pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a Japanese free agent and three-time winner of Japan’s version of the Cy Young Award.
Yamamoto, just 25-years-old, was considered the prize pitcher of this winter’s free-agent market, with every big market team in pursuit. The Dodgers won with a reported 12-year deal worth $325 million, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The contract surpasses the total value of the New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole’s record $324 million, but is three years longer.
The Yamamoto deal contains no deferrals, per reports.
Yamamoto has until Jan. 4 to finalize his deal under terms of his posting.
The signing is the second significant move by the Dodgers in the off-season. They signed designated hitter and reigning Mvp Shohei Ohtani to a blockbuster $700 million deal earlier, meaning they have committed a billion dollars to just two players, albeit over many years. Ohtani...

Baseball is back: Major League Baseball‘s owners and players have reportedly reached a tentative agreement on a new labor deal, ending the 99-day lockout that has delayed the 2022 season.
The report comes from ESPN baseball reporter Jeff Passan, who adds that the deal still has to be ratified by both parties, but that is expected to be a formality. Players can report to spring training as early as tomorrow, and Opening Day is currently slated for April 7 — a week later than the original March 31 date. The hope is to fit in enough games to preserve the traditional 162 game season,...

Longtime baseball announcer Thom Brennaman offered an apology during Wednesday’s broadcast of a Cincinnati Reds game after a hot mic caught him using a homophobic slur.
Brennaman, who works as the Reds’ play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports Ohio, was heard during Wednesday’s Reds game referring to “one of the f-g capitals of the world,” using a three-letter gay slur. (Brennaman apparently didn’t know he was live on the air at the time.)

As strange as it may seem, Major League Baseball has its own political action committee. It isn’t afraid to spread its money around Washington, either. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the league has given $245,000 this year to a diverse array of politicians, from Republicans like Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-tx) to Democrats like Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-ny) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn). On Sunday, independent journalist Judd Legum reported the league also gave the maximum donation of $5,000 to Cindy Hyde-Smith, the U.S. Senate...

Tuesday night’s Major League All-Star Game is one Josh Hader will never forget. The Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher was on the mound for just a third of an inning, giving up a tie-breaking three-run homer that briefly put the American League in the lead. But enough about baseball! Hader’s disastrous short-lived appearance on the mound wasn’t close to the worst part of his night. Midway through the game, held at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., some Twitter archaeologists unearthed a treasure trove of offensive tweets in Hader’s archives,...
