1982 Abitur at Marie-Luise-Kaschnitz-Gymnasium in Völklingen; studied political science and law in Trier and later in Saarbrücken; graduated Magistra Artium in 1990. As a student, she already held the office of deputy state chairwoman of the Junge Union Saar and the chairmanship of the CDU city association of Püttlingen.
Since 1991, advisor for policy and planning of the CDU Saar; since 1999, personal advisor to Saarland Minister President Peter Müller; since 1999, office of state chairwoman of the Frauen-Union Saar and parliamentary director of the CDU state parliamentary group in Saarland; member of the Saarland state parliament; in 1998, briefly member of the 13th German Bundestag.
1999 to 2011 Minister of the Interior, Education, Labor, Women, Family, Prevention, Social Affairs, Culture and Sports of Saarland; since 2003 Deputy Federal Chairwoman of the Women's Union; since 2010 Member of the Presidium of the CDU of Germany.
Elected Minister-President of Saarland in 2011; Minister of Justice of Saarland; Minister of Science and Research of Saarland from 2012 to 2018; becomes first Secretary General and later Party Chair of the CDU of Germany in 2018.
Since July 2019, Federal Minister of Defense.
