Odd Future has been very busy in the music scene this year. After Mike G released the Award Tour II Ep at the end of January, Hodgy Beats released a free mix tape on Datpiff.com in early February. The mixtape, entitled The Dena Tape 2, is produced almost entirely by DJ Don Cannon. Another Odd […]

Russell Simmons' recently launched All Def Digital YouTube network will predominantly spotlight young, talented artists looking to gain a wider audience, but one of its first series takes an inside look at a trio of well known hip-hop personalities. Odd World: MellowHigh follows three members of the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All collective--Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, and Left Brain--as they record the first album for their new project, MellowHigh. Though Hodgy, Domo, and Left haven't not achieved the same level of mainstream attention as fellow Odd Future members Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt, they share the same youthful energy and in-your-face attitude that has helped make Odd Future into one of hip-hop's most controversial groups. Therefore, while Odd World will spend plenty of time in the studio, we can expect MellowHigh to throw out plenty of surprises. "I mean this is MellowHigh,...

5) Julian Lynch “Northline”
Directed by Richard Law
First this week is a video for all you dog lovers out there, think Houses’ “Beginnings” but with dogs.
4) Hodgy Beats “Alone”
Directed by Ian Flanagan & Hodgy Beats
Another Odd Future rapper releasing another Ep means another cool video. Once again, it’s very Odd Future-esque; weird and trippy making this performance-driven actually interesting. The shot where he’s buried up to his neck is especially cool.
3) Mount Kimbie “You Took Your Time”
Directed by Marcus Söderlund
The Swedish filmmaker most famous for The Xx’s “Vcr” video directs this dark affair. Shot in a beautiful black and white, “You Took Your Time” follows a number of characters through an urban landscape.
2) Janelle Monáe “Dance Apocalyptic”
Directed by Wendy Morgan
Monáe lets her hair down and ditches her usual black-and-white suit attire for new single “Dance Apocalyptic”. As she becomes another one...

I’m going to start this review with a confession; I planned on doing it last weekend. Unfortunately, last weekend was Easter weekend and well, I’m not a Christian but, I honourably celebrated it as best as I could; right through from Good Friday to Easter Monday – it’s what Jesus would’ve wanted. At the time it was being streamed on the Odd Future website for free as a response to the album leaking ahead of release; a kind of damage control. Anyhow, once I’d sobered up the album was out, the stream was taken down and after a few play-throughs on Spotify my listening limit ran out.
So here I am reviewing the album thanks to a full-album-containing YouTube video because I’m that kind of music journalist. I would’ve bought it honest but overdrafts have a limit, you know? Anyway,...

Here at Ology, there's only thing we love more than talking to our favorite musicians, artists, athletes and celebrities: not talking to them. In our ongoing series of Non-Interviews, we'll be asking hard, probing, no-nonsense questions to a rotating cast of influential men and women who are much too busy to actually speak with us.
As you've all heard by now, Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean's long-awaited debut album channel Orange is online now and available in (most) stores next Tuesday. Over the past month, rumors surrounding Ocean's sexuality began to surface when fans and early reviewers began noticing a lot of "he"s and "him"s in songs like "Bad Religion" and "Forrest Gump." Ocean attempted to clear the air by publishing a beautifully written Tumblr post poetically describing an unrequited first love with another man. Yet despite rave critical reviews (including ours), much the buzz surrounding channel Orange...

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. MellowHype. Hodgy Beats. Gerard Damien Long. So goes the transgression and separation from collective to duo to stage persona to man. Everyone is pretty aware of and well introduced to the collective (though mostly a certain The Creator and Sweatshirt), up to speed with the duo (Hodgy and Left Brain, both of Ofwgka) and aware of the stage persona; volatile aggressor, thanks in no part Odd Future’s live shows and Tyler, The Creator’s television debut performance of Sandwiches featuring Hodgy Beats on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
So that’s three out of four pretty well established and pretty well documented, not so much the latter though. Though with this solo outing in Untitled Ep we start to get more of an idea, even if it’s still under the Hodgy Beats moniker. Disregarding The Dena Tape...

Call security and alert the censors, because Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All will invade "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. Tyler, the Creator, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Mike G., Syd tha Kid, Matt Martians, Jasper Dolphin, Taco and Earl Sweatshirt will all camp out on the "RapFix" couch for a rare interview.
The group broke through in February 2011, when Tyler and Hodgy famously performed their single "Sandwitches" on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and have been on a meteoric rise ever since. Sadly, Earl Sweatshirt, who helped lay the groundwork for the group, wasn't around to experience it. The then-exiled teen was sent to an all-boys military school in Samoa, but now Earl is back home and will be on "RapFix Live.

Odd Future have two new eye candies this week, neither of which makes much sense, par for the course. "Loiter Squad," the hip-hop group's live-action "Adult Swim" show due later this month, has a new promo for the character Jasper, which equates to something like a series of animated .gifs. Chop and screw at your leisure. Then there's "NY (Ned Flander)," featuring Tyler, the Creator and Hodgy Beats and the frequent appearance of Lucas Vercetti, who's featured on the cover of the group's new album "The Of Tape Vol. 2." Repeated is the meme of big girls shaking ass, while Hodgy gyrates...

He's a self-proclaimed "f---in' walkin' paradox," and in 2011, contradiction is the new "keeping it real," as Tyler, the Creator proved each time he opened his mouth -- whether to rap or eat a cockroach. Much like his music, Tyler's breakout video for "Yonkers" was as shocking as it was artistic, earning him Vma noms for Best New Artist and Video of the Year.
"I'm really excited, shout-out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I'm gonna be mad because they all suck -- except for Adele's," Tyler told MTV News of his nomination in July.
Tyler himself directed the black-and-white clip for "Yonkers" under the alias Wolf Haley. The song's rhyme couplets are as striking as the images.

Somehow managing to ride the line between overwhelming pop ubiquity and anarchic underground independence, the L.A.-based hip-hop collective Odd Future (full name: Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, or Ofwgkta) has written its own rules yet again.
Just yesterday, only a month after Funny or Die lampooned the idea of the group receiving major-label backing, it was confirmed that the mostly teenage members of Odd Future had done just that, partnering with Sony’s Red Distribution to create their own label-within-a-label. According to a statement from their management, the group's members will “release music-based content consistent with their vision” under the Odd Future Records banner.
"Red and Sony know that it's in everyone’s best interest to maintain the group’s authenticity and control," the statement said. "They built it, they deserve it."

Over the past few months, Odd Future have exploded onto the music scene, leading the charge for the New West. But though they hail from Los Angeles, the collective actually prefers to be known as "new rap group Odd Future" as opposed to "new L.A. rap group Odd Future." This penchant for not being boxed in is part of what's fueled their success, which has seen them performing at the mtvU Woodies; in the pages of nearly every skate, music and pop-culture publication; taking over "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon"; and even parodying themselves in a Funny or Die spoof.
While the last few months may have seemed like a whirlwind, the group isn't an overnight-success story. Tyler, the Creator, Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats, Left...

While Tyler, the Creator may be Odd Future's outspoken mouthpiece and (currently missing) Earl Sweatshirt the group's most intriguing member, MellowHype's Hodgy Beats and Left Brain are no less talented and the pair are primed to start making a lot of noise themselves.
MellowHype consists of producer Left Brain and rapper Hodgy Beats, and they performed alongside Tyler during Of's watershed moment on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" in February.
The duo first met in high school and went on to release two albums, YelloWhite and BlackendWhite, last year, while Hodgy released his solo The Dena Tape in 2009. Both MellowHype projects were well-received and they plan to re-release a re-mastered version of BlackendWhite through their new label,...
