Graydon Sheppard’s latest online video series isn’t like his first. The creator of the Sh*t Girls Say twitter account, star of the subsequent web series, and progenitor of the viral phenomenon that followed recently launched a new program on Nowness, a “global culture platform for digital storytelling.” Sheppard's follow up to his cross-dressed, kinda clip show, critique on stereotypical feminine conversations doesn’t attempt to delve into the psyche of his subject matter. Instead, Pure Breeds is all about cute pups with prestigious pedigrees. Here’s a primer, from what Sheppard told Nowness when asked how the series came to be: I’m a dog nut. It used to be so bad that when I saw a cute dog on the street and got to pet it, I would cry. Purebred dogs and cats are odd in that they’re ‘luxury animals,’ so they’re gorgeous and have interesting histories,...

You have to hand it to the creative minds behind Sh*t Girls Say. After the travesty that was the success and karmic failure of Sh*t My Dad Says, once a popular Twitter account and subsequent William Shatner starring CBS sitcom, the novelty of Twitter-turned-television series seemed to have warn off. Sh*t Girls Say may have started out in a similar fashion, with a Twitter account and 2 million followers, but the property made the smart decision to stick to a four-episode web series, staying away from tempting TV deals. Oh, hold on a second. I’m just hearing… okay… yeah, I spoke too soon. Sh*t Girls Say is being made into a TV show.
I guess the prospect of a fame going beyond Internet notoriety was just too tempting for filmmaker/director Graydon Sheppard and writer/graphic designer Kyle Humphrey. Why have 36 million YouTube hits when you...

The Twitter account that spun-off a web series with Juliette Lewis, a book published by Harlequin, and a full-fledged internet meme with thousands of contributors will be spinning off into another medium. Deadline broke the news the creators of the uber-popular Sh*t Girls Say inked a development deal with NBCUniversal’s Style Media to bring an iteration of their comical, cross-dressed take on stereotypical feminine behavior to television. Toronto-based Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Sheppard created the Sh*t Girls Say Twitter account in April 2011. It’s now up to 1.9 million followers, due in large part to the incredible success of the pair’s Sh*t Girls Say four-episode mini-series. The duo uploaded their first installment in December 2011, which featured Sheppard in a variety of everyday locales wearing women’s clothes and saying things some girls tend to say. Since then, the video has been seen no less than 19.5 million times.

Style network has landed "Sh-t Girls Say." Graydon Sheppard and Kyle Humphrey, the creators of the Twitter account-turned-web series, have signed a development deal to bring its character to the NBCUniversal cable network. The series will feature the Canadian team's "Girl" character in a comedy sketch show format, which will "explore the worlds of fashion, beauty and lifestyle through her unique and comedic yet universal point of view," according to Tuesday's announcement. Exclusive: Style Media has signed a development deal with the guys behind the Twitter-to-Web series Sh*t Girls Say to take their wide-eyed, brunette star and have her explore the worlds of fashion, beauty and lifestyle. In case you’ve been living under a flat rock: Sh*t Girls Say started out as a Twitter account poking fun at the way two guys — photographer-filmmaker-director Graydon Sheppard and writer/graphic designer Kyle Humphrey — observe women talking to friends, strangers, co-workers, and themselves. All comments come out of the mouth of the one girl — played by Sheppard. Humphrey drew the short straw and plays the boyfriend. First tweet: “Could you pass me that blanket?” debuted on April 7, 2011. Nearly 2 million Twitter followers, a four-episode web series with nearly 36 million views, one Sh*t Girls Say book, and thousands of parodies later, they’ve hooked up with Style and StyleNetwork.com — owned by NBCUniversal,...

A few months ago, the duo behind the Shit Girls Say channel and Twitter feed released a book, giving every lady in the world the first gift for her twinsies. Creators Graydon Sheppard and Kyle Humphrey have now released the fifth video on the Shit Girls Say channel, taking viewers inside the construction of their most recent endeavor. Each entry in the book consists of a saying from the book superimposed on a relevant image. This would be easy to accomplish with any computer graphics program, but Sheppard and Humphrey took the time to create each entry by hand. Whether this meant writing on a cake, attaching a saying to a dog collar, or wearing a sentence on the forehead while in full drag, the creative pair gave their fullest effort and published a book that was made by hand, which should excite people who care about that sort of...

Graydon Sheppard knows the humiliation of requiring a size 14 dress during Fashion Week. One-half of the duo behind the social media phenom Sh*tGirlsSay, Sheppard went shopping Thursday for something to wear on his second-ever public outing in drag, in New York. "Worst. Experience. Everrrr," says Kyle Humphrey, his partner in Twitter as well as life, "because of his body." This is, of course, the whole point of @Sh*tGirlsSay, a Twitter prank that went viral in large part because...

Why did the International Academy of the Digital Arts and Sciences choose Patton Oswalt to host this year’s 16th Annual Webby Awards? Oswalt has an inkling: “I look like the Internet personified,” he told an audience filled with celebrities, tech bigwigs, and humble entertainment journalists this afternoon. But Oswalt needn’t have been so self-deprecating. His jokes were uniformly well-received at Monday’s awards ceremony, especially when the comedian went off book. This, for example, is how Oswalt reacted after Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau accepted a statuette on behalf of Greenland.com: “I think winter just came!

The Academy (comprised of the likes of high-profile internet savvy individuals like Twitter co-Founder Biz Stone and The Huffington Post’s namesake Arianna Huffington) bestowed its highest honor of Webby Person of the Year upon Louis C.K., who recently made headlines and a lot of cash by self-distributing a video of his comedy special Live at the Beacon Theater (which soon inspired other comedians like Aziz Ansari to adopt a similar distribution tactic). New York -- When Louis C.K. released his comedy special "Live at the Beacon Theater" by himself on his website for $5, it was little more than a cautiously optimistic experiment.

There’s a secret to building a hit web series; to writing the perfect story or cultural commentary that people can’t help but share. It’s elusive and the people who accidentally stumble upon it grow fewer with each passing year. Today, the overnight viral sensations (like Shit Girls Say) tend to be intentional and cautiously developed over time (Sgs creator, Graydon Sheppard, built a 54,000 person twitter following before creating a corresponding online series). Still, idiotic, super-cute, and extreme videos keep landing in my Inbox. It may be because we humans have a difficult time turning away from spectacle. But more than that, those videos might possess the elements that web series producer and show runner, Tim Street (VP of Mobile Video at mDialog and creator of French Maid TV) frequently and publicly proclaims to be the key to engaging an audience: Activate two or more emotions at the same time.

Just when you thought the Sh!t (insert socioeconomic, sex, religious, or racial minority group here) online video genre was over, just when you thought the internet phenomenon started by Toronto-based filmmakers Graydon Sheppard and Kyle Humphrey, a cameo by Juliette Lewis, and a Twitter account had run its course, that all iterations of this particular piece of online ephemera had been explored to the greatest possible extents, that the Sh*t Nobody Says video by Tripp and Tyler was a good place to call it quits, there comes another addition to the catalogue that’s worthy of note. Shit New Yorkers Say comes from comedian siblings Eliot Glazer (creator of My Parents Were Awesome and Tubefilter contributor) and Ilana Glazer (one of the two creators of web-series-turned-possible-fx-television-show Broad City) and is worth watching because it’s well shot and within the eight years I’ve lived in New York...

There was a slight twinge of panic amongst the ladyfolk when the Twitter and viral video sensation “S— Girls Say” all but took over the Internet. Not out of the fear that it could become too popular for its own good and get its own miserable spin-off like a certain similarly titled CBS sitcom (still a legitimate concern, though), but that a guy had actually cracked some of our not-so-secret code. Making a Twitter account, a Tumblr blog, or a coffee table book with a single premise that’s easy to execute multiple times is difficult but doable. Turning that Twitter account, Tumblr blog, or coffee table book into a live-action television or web series can be more challenging. What works when confined to the real estate of 140 characters or a small caption, doesn’t easily translate when given the wide expanse of longer forms of entertainment. That’s especially true for one-liners. You Might Be a Redneck jokes have laid a strong foundation for at least one comedian’s career, but they haven’t been the basis for any major motion pictures or television programs. The creators of Shit Girls Say know this. And that’s why they’re trying to mix their web series up. Twitter accounts don’t necessarily make for the best television shows. Justin Halpern and executives at CBS will be the first people to tell you that. Halpern’s Twitter account Shit My Dad Says was picked up as inspiration for the CBS sitcom with the eponymous family-friendly-title of $h*! My Dad Says back in November 2009. By May 2011, after one 18-episode season, CBS cancelled the program. This happened despite star appeal (William Shatner played the role of “Dr. Edison Milford Goodson III” aka “Dad”) and a rabid online fan base (Halpern’s Twitter account has a couple million followers). Twitter accounts may, however, make for pretty great web series. If the initial reception of Shit Girls Say is any indication, Halpern should’ve kept Shit My Dad Says online. Created and written by Toronto-based filmmaker Graydon Sheppard and his partner Kyle Humphrey, and cameod by Juliette Lewis, the first installment of...
